8th Air Force

James Flener, born February 7, 1921-died October 14, 1943, was one of my uncle's crew members in WW II. They flew a mission together (my uncle, 2nd Lt. Edward S. Reed) was the pilot) for the 8th Air Force, 94th Bomb Group (which flew out of England) and the plane went down on October 14, 1943. All of the crew members were taken as POWs except for James who was killed. James is listed on the WW II Memorial page and his wife (at that time) is listed as the source. So, I'm trying to find Norma Flener Keller who was married to James during the war. The only clue that I have is that the hometown of James is listed as Latimer County, Oklahoma.

Here is the complete list of the crew:

October 14th 1943. B-17F -30- VE 42-5901. 1xKIA, 9xPOW. MACR: 789.

Reed, Edward S. 2nd Lt. O-522763 (P). POW.
Bledsoe, Sidney B. 2nd Lt. O-802524 (CP). POW.
Oerther, John R. 2nd Lt. O-749397 (N). POW.
Hayes, Burnie P. 2nd Lt. O-729625 (B). POW.
Epperson, Virgil M. S/Sgt. 17091384 (TTG). POW.
Morris, Earl G. Jr. S/Sgt. 13117334 (RO). POW.
McGavack, Howard C. S/Sgt. 19088579 (BTG). POW.
Flener, James R. Sgt. 38318345 (LWG). KIA.
Elliott, Robert C. S/Sgt. 18076987 (RWG) POW.
O’Brien, Joseph J. Sgt. 32467205 (TG). POW.

I have ordered the MACR but have not received it yet.

If this is familiar to anyone, I'd appreciate hearing from you.

Also, I am looking for anyone who knew 1st Lt. Marion O. Nelson of the 8th Air Force. He was from Montgomery, Alabama and is listed as DNB (died non-battle). He was my dad's best friend and from my dad's notes it appears that he was on his way home when he was killed piloting a ferrying mission at Randolph Field, Texas. Apparently he was killed somewhere between Randolph Field and Mobile, Alabama. His wife had a son (Ronald, I think) while he was gone and he never knew his son. I'd love to know more about Marion's service and find his family members.

Thanks for any help,

Melissa

Richard A. Wertheim

Hi all,

My name is Sebastiaan Vonk, a 15 years old boy who lives in Hardinxveld-Giessendam, a small town in the Netherlands. Since about two years, I am interested in the Second World War. To commemorate and honor the soldiers who died I have adopted three graves of fallen American soldiers. Lawrence F. Shea, who is buried on the Margraten American Cemetery, Charles G. Brinkley, Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery and Richard A. Wertheim who is buried on the Ardennes American Cemetery. To know more about them, I do to all research. So also to Richard A. Wertheim. I will tell here something more about him:

Richard A. Wertheim was born in 1915. He had two sisters, who are both deceased. He served first in the United States National Gard and drafted after one year in the US Army Air Forces. He was married with a women who is called probably Florence Wertheim, or something similiar to this name, I don't if she is still living. Richard Wertheim was Second Lieutenant in the 401st Bomb Squadron, 91st Bomb Group. He flew 8 missions as bombardier of his plane . He died on March 6, 1944 when his plane, the B17 My Darling Also, was rammed by a German Focke Wulf 190. The plane crashed. Two crew members could bail out but the other eight members were all killed. Richard A. Wertheim was 29 of 30 years old when he was killed. He is buried now on the Ardennes War Cemetery in Belgium. In October of this year I have adopted his grave.

I would like to get in contact with his family. I would appreciate help with finding his family. Please let me know if you want to help me or if you have found information about him or his family.

Thank you very much!

Kind Regards,

Sebastiaan

If you are in anyway connected to a veteran, it would be nice to add their story to the history of their unit and of their conflict. As a member of today's military, I am seeking former members of my unit. If you can ask "your" vet what units s/he was assigned to, and if you post that info, you would make future searches easier.

Respectfully,
Keith

Private who stopped Patton on Bridge

I was told a story regarding a confrontation between my Grandpa, Robert Lee Woods and General Patton:

Robert Woods was a Private who was on Gaurd duty. He was to stop anyone attempting to cross a particular bridge,(I believe it was around the time of the Battle of the Bulge).

At one point General Patton tried to cross the bridge, but my Grandpa refused to allow him passage. I think Patton was in the back with the windows rolled up. I believe he was being driven across. Anyway, the story I heard says they exchanged words and Patton exclaimed, "Do you know who I am Private?" and My grandpa said something to the effect of," I dont give a %$#@*%$#@ who you are I have orders and I will blow your head off if you dont back off!!". Patton was at first very angry, but then his anger turned to praise and at some point when the incident had come to an end, my Grandad was commended for his steadfast manner in which he carried out his order to gaurd the bridge. I dont know all of the facts, but this is a story that has been around my family for years...

If anyone has heard of the Private who stood up to Patton let me know as I would like to know more about it.

I was told that the incident was actually portrayed in an old war movie, but I dont know which one.

Thanks,

Ronald Woods Jr.

I'm hoping someone here can assist me in figuring out what the following WWII Army unit acronym stands for from an official Record of Service. I've had no luck on military history or acronym websites and I have been unable to locate either an overall Army unit orginization chart for 1945 or a period list with this acronym on it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The service records list the unit my ancestor is assigned to from 4/8/1945 to 8/8/1945 first as "S.L.S #4, HQ's ETO" then on the next line as "Static Ln Staff #4" with the location "APO 197" (he did not get a unit transfer based off of his Evaluation form, it was simply listed twice for an unknown reason) I know that APO 197 was for the Office of the Corps Commander, Headquarters, XVI Corps. In another document the unit is listed as "Static Ln Staff, HQ." The records don't give any locations at all- only Station or APO number; the generic "ETO"; or the Service Branch name- for overseas service.

My interpretation is that he's wotking as "Line Staff" for the headquarters of the XVI Corps during this period. As I understand it the Corps level of the Army is the 4th line in the WWII military organization scheme after the Allied Expeditionary Force; Army Group (in this case the 12th Army Group); and Army (Ninth Army). Does anyone know if this is correct? If so where does the "Static" part of the unit name fit in? Does this simply mean that members of this unit are non-combat staff?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

I found a distant cousin who was buried in a private cemetery in Michigan who does not have a military headstone. I contacted the VA and they told me that they provide the headstone free of charge, but there is a $367 installation fee. Is that the norm? I don't know why he doesn't have one. David was KIA in Normandy France 1944, buried in St Mere Iglise then the body was shipped back here for reburial abt 1948 at the families request. Is there anything can be done?
Hello all,

I am new here, and am a researcher and collector of WWII US Medical Items from WW2. I maintain a website dedicated to research into the topic, which can be found at www.med-dept.com. I have recently obtained a uniform pertaining to a Lt. J. H. Huntsman. The insignia on the uniform seem to indicate that he was later made Major, and belonged to a Hospital unit in the PTO.

Unfortunately, I don't have any additional information about this man, and I am very anxious to contact anyone that might have served with him, or be related to him. Any information at all would be most gratefully received, and I can reached either on here, or through my email at ben@med-dept.com.

I am in particular looking for the unit with which he served and perhaps a photograph of him.

Many thanks and kind regards,
Ben

Any information or ideas would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to find any information or ideas for further research on my father's Military History. I have already contacted NPRC and hopefully will get some more information, but last I knew alot of my father's information was destroyed in fire in 1973. Here's some information that I have on my dad and I would appreciate any assistance anyone could provide.

Thomas Sullivan served in USAAF from 12-Sep-1941 to 20-Oct-1945. Training in 1941 at Camp Wheeler, GA part of Co. C. 7th Training Battalion - I have group photo for this.
Discharge papers shows he was in 3rd Troop Carrier Group. They also mention that he was in Ascension Islands from 14-Aug-1942 to 13-Jul-1944, Radar/Teletype Operator. I also have papers showing him as being part of 692nd Signal Company (AWS) which I understand was part of Composite Force 8012.

Apologize for the information being so fragmented.
Thank you.
Sadly after my grandfather passed away, my step-grandmother threw out everything that was important to the family, including everything that had to do with military. I've slowly been piecing information together and finally got a hold of his discharge record. Now I want to order copies of all his medals, insignia, and badges. The medals listed on his record are pretty clear. It's some of the other stuff I'm confused about. I hope this is helpful information, can anyone help me compile a list of any other badges and/or insignia he may have had? A big thanks to anyone that can help.

He was in the Army during World War II.

Rank: T/3
Organization 742d Ordinance Company.
Military occupation: Mech Automotive Wheel Vehicle and what looks like the number 365.
Military qualifications: Marksman Rifle and Expert Gunner (?Looks like it says gunner?).
Decorations and citations: Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Campaign Ribbon, Army Occupation Medal of Germany, European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon, Victory Medal.
Service Schools attended: Wheel Vehicle 1944 Excellent Rate.
Under remarks it also says:
Issued Lapel Button
ERC 22 Oct 43 - 11 Nov 43
ASR Score (2 Sep 45) 39

My fiance filled out an SF-180 to try and attain any military records that he could about his grandfather, Jimmie Boren.
What would military records tell us?
We know nothing about Grandpa. We are pretty sure that his parents died in the 1928 Hurricane in FL, and so they have no death records. We have no marriage record of grandpa's parents. We know only his mother's name (Teague, Daisy).

Would military records have any information about his parents? They died when he was 6, and he was raised by his grandmother, so we know he did not need to list his parents as next-of-kin.

I have been informed by veterans that my Dad was involved in the long range desert group (LRDG) and then joined 1 SAS whilst in North Africa. They have told me about missions he spoke about, one ex REME engineer mentioned his first mission was a parachute drop that went horribly wrong because of the weather. I am trying to find out where to start my research to gain confirmation of his involvement.

Are there any resources which would list the names of men that served in the LRDG and 1 SAS?

His service record just shows 5/Seaforth Highlanders - Middle East 1942 - 1943. Then he went down to a Greek island called Leros 16.11.1943 where he was captured and sent to Stalag VIIa.

Can anyone help me find the citation for the military medal awarded to Frederick Henry Salter, of the Hampshire Regiment (2 Battalion) in World War 2? The award is listed in the London Gazette of 14/2/1946, and I have his military records, but there is no mention on the medal card as to why he was awarded the medal. Is looking at the war diaries the only way, and if so, how do I go about this?
Grateful for any pointers,
Grawood

I am trying to trace my deceased father's family history and have some wonderful photo's from his time in the Middle East.

His name was Stanley Thomas Neal (possibly nicknamed "Pegasus") and he was in the maintenance team (approx 1942/4) repairing “Spitfire IX's” and "Lode Stars". He came from Cambridge, England and was posted to the Mediterranean/North African Desert/Jerusalem etc

The albums contain many names and I would be interested to see if there are any links that still exist to these chaps.

Martin Lloyd, Charlie Floyd, Maurice Aizlewood, Harry Raper, Bob Clarke, “Ginger” Gray, Arthur Gooding, Semaine, Tandy, Griffiths, Dunham, Vamplew, Hickmore, Pearson, Mitchell. They shared an M1 tent and frequented the “Britannia Club” near Port Said/Alexandria.

There was an “Inn” or accommodation called the “Scotland Club” or “St Andrew’s Club” which overlooked Jerusalem and the lake.

There are a host of nicknames: Chiefy, Andy, Hitch, Jack, Chippy, Paddy, Brum, Taff, Bunny, Joe, Norman. And there was an old wagon/tractor called Mabel!

There was also a Mrs Wilkinson and her daughter Maureen (who would be in her 80's now) and a Joyce Saunders (probably in her 60's now). They lived at 81 Commercial Road, Pietermaritzburg in North Africa. Near the Haypadock Camp.

Are you a relative? Can you supply any more information? I’d love to hear from you.

Pauline Fotheringham (Nee: Neal)
This is probably a stupid question, but I've looked online and can find hardly any information when I type in "Tec 4" in relation to wwii...I just end up with specific individuals but nothing about is as a whole.

Is TEC 4 the 4th army? Or is TEC just an armored division? My grandfather was a member of Tec 4 and I know he drove a tank.

Furthermore, where can I find records that show what company, battalion, etc. he was in?

Thanks~

Hello all,

I am new to the list and I am trying to help a man find his biological father. He only has a picture, I have been trying to identify the ribbons and the Aiguillette (left shoulder cord). Unfortunately the man in the pictures left shoulder is not visible so it is hard telling what unit he belonged to. As for the branch insignia I am unable to make the image clearer so see what it is, however to me it looks like Quartermaster.

I was hoping you all could look at the photo and give me any clues you may have. Correct me if I am wrong but I believe the ribbon on the right side to be the Good Conduct Medal. Another bit of information, this man was stationed in or near Cardiff Wales around May 1945.

Thank you in advance to any help you can give. I have attached the photo, hopefully it will show up.

Sincerely,
Stephanie

My Father was Stanislaw Szulimowski, He fought in the Polish free Army at the Battle of Monte Casino. Before that, i know he served in Palastine . I know Little about my Dad, i do know he recieved a medal. All my Dad's paperwork, medals and anything else, had been taken many years ago, there is little left for me to find anything out about my Dad. I have no information about him other than his Name, his sisters name Helena, and that he may have been born in Costapl, Poland, which no longer exists. Has any one any tips that can help me further to find out about my dad. I only have 4 photos of him, all taken during the war and in Uniform, but that is all. I would be extremely gratefull for any help whatsoever.
Thankyou for taking the time to read this, also good luck with your own Ancestry, Sheila Szulimowska.

Researching my great-grandmother, I found her twin brother served and was killed in WWII. His name was Richard Wroath, a Lance Corporal in the Corps of Military Police, 203 Provost Company, and he was killed in the middle east, buried in Egypt. He died on 6 April 1944 and this is all the CWGC tells me.

I've looked up a few others buried in the same cemetry as him + listed as being in 'The COMP' and there's only three, all Lance Corporals- Frank Tilbury, Gordon McLeod and James Gulliver.

What I want to find out is anything about Richard's military career- when he joined up, any other comrades and what were they doing in the middle east? -Even a photo. Anyone who's related to or knows any info about the other 3-
their info would be fantastic.
Cheers
R.

Hi,

I have recently got a copy of my grandads service records from the RAF. This is the only info they had on him. I was hoping it may show the countries he went too, but all its has is a list of dates, and next to that the words 'unit to' followed by a somewhat confusing list of numbers and letters, for example '10 AGS'. This is followed by two columns 'date of movement' and 'P.O.R confirming arrival'.

I would be most grateful if anyone can shed any light on what these column headings mean, and if there is anyway of working out what all the letters/number under the unit section relate too.

Thanks in advance
Lindsay

I am trying to find info. on my Dad. He passed away when I was 12 so I am left with little info. to go on. I would really like to research his Father and his family. I know my Grandmothers name was Pearl A. Cooler at death but her maiden name was Brabham. My Grandfather was a Will Davis. My father enlisted in Feb. 1941 at Ft. Ogelthorpe as a PVT. in the Army. I found the enlistment record that is online but it gives little info. I have sent off for records already as well with the paperwork coming back saying it was in the fire. If anyone has any info it would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Dawn
Kickassarmybaby@yahoo.com

WWII Ship Sinking. Leopoldville? Pvt Joseph Mugan

I am trying to locate the ship that a relative of mine was aboard when it sunk during WWII. He was Pvt Joseph Mugan from Stamford, CT.
The newspaper said that he was killed on Christmas day 1944 in the European theatre.
After speaking to some relatives, the only other info they could provide was that he was aboard a ship that was torpedoed some where off the coast of France.

I have not been able to locate any ships being sunk on Christmas day. The closest I find is the Leopoldville on Christmas Eve 1944.

If anyone knows of a ship that fits the info I have, or knows where I can find a list of the deceased from the Leopoldville, please contact me.

Am looking for an enlistment of father-in-law, but not sure what name he used. Could Be Alfred Richard Bohun, Charles Arthur Bohun, Chales Arthur Mansfield, (this is the name he used for WW11) in Australia. We believe he enlisted in NZ. His real name was Alfred Richard Bohun, but we knew him as Charles Arthur Mansfield. Found his driver's licence in Launceston in the name of Charles Arthur Bohun. We have him in a NZ uniform circa 1914/15. He was born in Granya Victoria in 1886

He was in the 5th AAF according to a patch located on a jacket in a photo of him standing at the nose of the plane Bataan. I am interested in learning more of what he actually did during this period.
Helping a good friend research his dad’s WWII service record. A couple of days ago he finally received his father’s honorable discharge papers (so faded it really is difficult to make out) and is now trying to figure the terminology & what some of the info actually means if we’re even reading it correctly.

Here’s what we have currently:

Enlisted II July 1944

Date of Separation: 14 Dec. 1945

Place of Separation: Because it's so faded some think Korea but the first letter looks a "L"

Rank: PFC

Service: INF.

Permanent address: Virginia House, Richmond Virginia

Was with: Company L / 20th Infantry

(he thinks his dad was with the 7111 Maintenance Squadron – did this even exist?)

Battlefield Campaign:
Luzon PI (though it was misspelled as "Lizon P.1.) 31 May’ 45 – 4 July ‘45

Military Occupation: Rifleman 745

Military Qualification: Combat Infantry Badge Roth Infantry - 5 July 1945

Decorations & Citations:

1) Asiatic Pacific Ribbon w/ one Bronze Star Gol***(can not read this part) then it says USAFFE

2) Philippine Liberation Ribbon - Ribbon w/ one Bronze Star Gol***(can not read this part) USSAFFE

3) "F * b (maybe an "A" or "E") World War II Victory Medal (this is very faded as well) " * IR 1 Oct 45 USAFPAC
(# 3 IS VERY HARD TO READ (* means can not read the letter)

Reason & Authority of Separation:
Convenience of Government AR 615-365 – 15 Dec ’44 (and?) WD CIR

What constitutes getting an AR 615-365 & what is CIR?)

Honorable Discharge for C of G to enlist in RA WD CIR 310 1945 –
Discharged as Temporary PFC AUS Permanent G**** **** **** (again very faded!)

(What does ALL the above mean?)

Under “Remarks” it states

“35(?) Plague 3/4/45 (the ? is because we ‘re not sure it says 35 – hard to read) but then he gets a Cholera shot on the same day (3/4/45)…..again please explain.

Another interesting point that we can somewhat read: It shows him going to Korea on 7 Oct-1945 & he’s there until 14, Dec ’45 – Why was he sent to Korea in Oct? What was he doing? We could read his ASW score which was 25 as of 2 Sept 1945. So he had more time to serve, correct?

My friend also has docs to show that in 1947 the Army switched his dad over to the Air Force where he stayed until 1949….was this routine? He was Infantry why move him over to the AF?

Interesting questions no doubt. We sure would welcome any guidance or much needed clarification to these terms, etc.

Thank you so much in advance for any help to this very personal request.

Respectfully

Marc Ferrero

I am looking for information on a World War II Army Air Corps vet who was a Prisoner of War in a German camp. His name is William J. Hensch. He enlisted on 3/5/1943 and lived through his imprisonment. He is still alive today and I am doing a family tree for his family as a Christmas gift for Christmas 08. If anyone could tell me where he was imprisoned or where i should search for this information I would really appreciate it.
Hi all

Not sure if I am posting in the correct area regarding this, so apologise if I am.

I have an old family photo. In it the gentleman is wearing a uniform which I managed to find out was for the Auxillery Fire Service. After researching I have found out that the AFS was established during WW2 to aid the normal Fire Service. I also can see from the photograph that it was the London AFS to which he belonged.

I am wondering if anybody could point me in the right direction to find out more information on the service and also, I would love to try and confirm the suspected identity of the person in the photograph.

Thank in advance for any help you might be able to give me.

E

Hi all

My mum told me a story which was told to her by her mum regarding the Bethnal Green Tube Station Bomb Shelter.

In 1943 there was a disaster that cost the lives of 173 people. My nan and Grandad were there on that night, but the story is sketchy, thankfully were not injured. I have done some research but have been unable to find out much at all.

I was wondering if anyone had heard of the disaster and had any more information, as I think it would be an interesting story passed down from my Grandmother to include in my family history research.

Thank you in advance for any help.

E

In July 1943, my father was serving on the AMC Asturias, a supply ship for a convoy. She was torpedoed by the Cagni, an italian sub and was eventually towed into Freetown by the Dutch tug Zwarte Zee. The crew joined other ships but I have not idea which one my father sailed out on. He was a Royal Naval Reserve and later was on the landing crafts on D Day. Any information would be helpful

My name is Nicole Caire Rouchon. For the last 10 years, I have been trying to locate an American paratrooper who came to France on or after 15th August 1944 and stayed at the U.S. Army Calas Staging Area, near Marseille/Aix-en-Provence. He may have belonged to the 3rd U.S. Army division.

His name was Nick VERNON. He came from a small town in Massachussetts and my mother (Augusta Marie CAIRE) worked for him while he was at the Calas camp. He stayed between 3 to 5 years at the camp. In 1948 or 1949 there was a commemoration of the U.S. troops arrival at Les Milles near Calas and I remember he took part in it. I do not know when the camp closed and when he left France to go back to America.

Database of Casualties of WW2

Does anyone know of a database listing the casualties of the battles of WW2? I am looking for the death location of Raymond Phillip Martineau, Cpl. Of the Marines. He is buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, HI. His death date was 20 Feb 1945 and his interment date was 23 Feb 1949. The death date coincides with the invasion of Iwo Jima but I cannot find any listing of the troops that fought in that battle. He could have been killed somewhere else, just guessing at Iwo Jima, but have no idea where to look. Also I have not found any listing for what Marine Division he served in. I have visited the American Battlefield Monument Commissions but all I can find there is the burial location and death/interment dates.
Thanks for any help.
Pat Bowen
Looking for Ship Photos

Hi,
My father was in the Ninth Evac Hospital during WW II, when the Ninth Evac went from North Africa to Sicily they went on the British Hospital Ship "Leinster". I was wondering if there is anyone out there with a photograph of that ship?

Thank you, Keith Lawrence

Lt. Richard Insley - Navy Reserves

He was aboard LST 460 when it was attacked and sunk by the Japanese in 1945. I believe he was born ca. 1919 in FL and his parents are Rev. and Mrs. L. Irving Insley. I have located him in the 1920 & 1930 censuses but I am unable to locate any other information regarding this person. I would be interested in learning when he enlisted, DOB, and any other information available. Any help and/or suggestions would be welcome. Thank you in advance.

looking for Af-Am units serving in Germany 1946-47

Mother was a German National, married name Hartl. Father was in military, I presume Army. Not one of the Tank units as they were back in the states by April 1946. If you are a military buff and know of all Black units stationed in Germany up until possibly as late as April 1947, would greatly appreciate the information.
