I have inherited quite a few records from my father-in-law from the war that included a shoe box of over 1200 photo's which I am still scanning.
One day, I was flipping thru pictures and came upon one of a good looking boy.. ( I have tried to attach it.. hopefully it works) anyways.. I flipped the picture over and saw handwriting that said KIA 24 April 1945. I probably have the last known picture taken of this boy.. Lewis Conklin... His family should see it.. I wondered what else do I have in these boxes. This is what inspired me to embark on this journey. I am now attempting to archive and upload everything.in ancestry..(The best Idea I could think of to return photo's to families) . it is a huge job. there are countless stories that need to be hand typed, pictures, people, and boxes... The morning reports I have scanned thru so far read like novels. It appears we have several companies... stored in these boxes.. and countless memories written... collected from reunions over the years.
I found upon entering this project, that I couldn't just stay with one company.. because they keep merging and seperating and people keep changing companies...
Anyone interested in assisting with this project, please let me know.
When I started on this project, I was surprised at how little there is on this division on the internet and how little people seem to know about it. Any family member researching this division is currently out of luck until this data is scanned, typed, archived, uploaded...
Are you looking for information on relatives?
Look me up and be sure to look at all records, all photo's and let me know if you are interested in getting access to the tree and assisting in getting items out of boxes and into the hands of the families where they belong..
My Dream.. is that this division will someday be the most well known, well documented regiment in WWII.. I need your help to make this happen!!!
As Dick Lawson says "very few of us are left and tomorrow more will be gone.."
PS. Interested in helping? I would love it!!!! Really not sure how long before I attack other divisions.. The 97th Mech RCN Tr APO unit journal is amazing!
