I found this scrapbook at a yard sale in Panola county,MS. All it has on the front is "David's" scrapbook. The articles seem to be from the Chicago Herald. The clippings also include a list of 68 Chicago soldiers injured in the war. It includes their addresses and some family names. Just wanted to share this info in case someone might know something!
Beverly
Kenneth James Cross from TX, died Jan. 6, 1984

Hello Everyone,

To begin with, please respond to this letter/query by email at: francesca@starstreamcable.com (I can't check the boards often, and responding to maggiesmemories will just put you in touch with my aunt, who is kind enough to let me use her ancestry.com subscription. On to business:

I am hoping that someone on this board can put me in touch with the family of WWII Veteran Kenneth James Cross, from Texas, I believe. He was born on Nov. 2, 1925 (although a family tree has his dob as 1926) He died on January 6, 1984. His United States Marine Corps Reserves WWII dog tag was found on Guadalcanal. Information on the tag is:

CROSS, K.J.
546952 P (Protestant)
TYPE A
T 12/43
USMCR

He most likely enlisted in December of 1943, because the T stands for Tetanus shot, and they usually got the shot when they first enlisted.

I have a picture of the tag that I can forward to family members, when I find them. I have the name of his wife and the names of his children, but have been unsuccessful in locating a current address or phone number for them. Names of his kids are: Joy, William and James. His wife is/was? named Ruth, maiden name Leake b. abt. 1922 All of Ruth and Kenneth's children were born in Texas.

My friend would like to give Kenneth's tag back to his family. There is no charge for this. He gets the tags, I do the research, and then we return the tags as a way of honoring the veteran. We feel a great responsibility to prevent these tags from ending up on Ebay or being sold as tourist trinkets. If you can help in any way, it would be greatly appreciated.
Francesca francesca@starstreamcable.com

Found USMCR WWII Dog Tag Marshall Islands.

Hi, I have come across a dog tag of a Marine who served in the Marshall Islands. I'm trying to get the dog tag to it's rightfull owner.

The tag reads;
Forrester
Albert B.
xxxx (unable to read) P
T/8/x2 (x= unable to read)
USMCR

The tag is very hard to read and very weathered. It looks like it may have been in a fire at one point. The tag was actually found on the Island of Eniburr, three islands down from the Island of Roi-Namur of the Kwajalein Atoll. The code name of the U.S. invasion of the Marshall Islands was operation "Flint-Lock".

I'm living on Roi-Namur and working for the Roi-Namur Police Detachment of the Kwajalein Police Department. Any resources you may know of in trying to locate this man or his survivng family so that I may return the tag would be greatly appreciated.

Respectfully,
Shilo J. Watts
wrath16@hotmail.com

Hello All,

My aunt has a WWII item with the name "Joe Hanus" hand inscribed on it. The item lists Joe Hanus' Company & places stationed during the war (at least that is our interpretation of it).

My aunt has no idea from where this item was obtained. Her husband was a ball turret gunner in WWII, so she appreciates the sentiment of such items. I would assume if I can find Joe Hanus' direct family members, she may be willing to return the item to them....

If the rightful family can tell me in what Company/Unit Joe Hanus served & where, we would be grateful. And (I believe) she would be willing to return it to them. However, we will NOT send it to WWII memorabilia collectors!

Thanks,
Sally Huntley

My uncle, Earl Sparkman, was a member of the Lost Battalion which was captured by the Japs at the beginning of WWII. I have been trying for years to find out his date of death for my family genealogy. My grandmother told me that she had heard that he was chained in the hold of a Japanese ship on the way to Japan when it was sunk by an American airplane. I asked for a release of information but was informed that since I am not a legal next of kin, I am not eligible to receive this information. His sister, the sole surviving member fo his immediate family is too old to bother. Can any give me a date this incident occurred?

I found a WWII Memorial Plaque in a local Antique Mall. This mall is located in Nitro WV. It is a bronze marker attached to a wooden background. Looks like something the community or the families of the men listed might want back. The following names are on the plaque Wade Adams, Lloyd Arnold, Starling Arthur, Wesley Brofford, Harry Q. Martin, Ray Neff, Leonard Queen, Orbie Shumate, Ray Shump, Arthur Slack and Everett Stanley. These names, with the exception of Wade Adams, Harry Q. Martin, and Orbie Shumate are on the KIA-MIA Memorial for Scioto County Ohio.
I would like to hear from anyone who served with my brother Morgan C. Roberts, from Irvine, Kentucky.
Morgan enlisted on September 21, 1942. I'm not completely sure where he took basic, but it was either Ft. Riley, Kansas, or Ft. Bliss, Texas. He was assigned to Troop "G", 2nd Brigade, 8th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division. After shipping out from Camp Stoneman, Calif, his outfit spent some time at Camp Strathpine, Queensland, Australia. He was wounded on Manus Island in March of 1944, and was on Leyte, and Luzon. Although I don't what part he played, his unit was part of the "flying column" Gen MacArthur ordered Gen Chase to form and "Go to Manila." He was killed March 3, 1945 while liberating Santo Thomas Internment Camp.
I can be contacted at the above email address, or at the following mailing address.
Phillip W.

My grandfather, James S. Nye, divorced from my grandmother just before WWII. He joined the Army and went to Bataan. He was captured and lived through the Death March as well as POW camps in the Phillipines and central Japan. My grandmother and mother were told by the Army that he was dead. In 1946, they received late notice that he was alive and has returned to the U.S. to a VA Hospital in Washington. We have been looking for him ever since. The VA, etc. declined to help and now say records are "gone". Japanese POW records are classified still, so we cannot even find out which prison camp he was in or what he endured. He may be dead as he would be 90 yrs old. His SSN is unknown. We are looking for him or relatives or anyone who knew him during or after the war. In 3 years of internet searches we have found one soldier who knew him in Bataan before capture. Any help is appreciated.Thank you R. Dorn and Judi(Nye) Duffield.

Edward Coates

I am searching for my Grandfather who I believe to be Edward Coates.

My father was born in 1943 in Worcester England. During the war his mother and a solider had a "relationship" of which my father was the result. On my father's birth certificate there was no name for his father.

Because of circumstances my father was sent to Australia in 1955 as part of the Child Migration Scheme. He had been living in an orphanage in England before this.

I recently got a piece of paper from my father when requesting information that he may have as I told him that I am searching my ancestors. I don't know where this paper came from as it had typed on the top Strictly Confidential and to be kept under lock and key.

It gave some information about family members on his mothers side but it also listed for father [putative] Edward Coates. It had his occupation as a Sergeant in the RASC. I calculated that his date of birth would have been about 1917 from the age he was at the time of the document.

Although my grandmother wont go into any information about my grandfather, and would not reveal his name (as you can see I have found out through other sources) I believe that my grandfather was of American or Canadian descent.

From asking questions apparently it was common in WWII for American's and Canadians to join the British Army.

So what I am asking is if anyone has any information about an Edward Coates who was a Sergeant in the RASC in England during WWII and was born around 1917 of American or Canadian background I would be greatly appreciative of the information.

Thanks for taking the time of reading this.

Belinda Hazzledine
belinda.hazzledine@arh.com.au
Melbourne Australia
Navy Buddies of James Brock

I am looking for several of my Daddy's Navy Buddies. He joined the Navy on December 4, 1942 and served until January 25, 1946. He was 26 years old when he joined. He is now coming up on 84 in October and he is desperate to find some of his old friends. One of the was Walter Carter. Walter was from Glenville NC. There was also a Hugh Carter also from NC, but I don't have a city. There was also an Arthur Lee Brown from Arlington Virginia. and a Johnny Munseil from Detroit Michigan (Not sure my spelling of Johnny's surname is correct. Another of Daddy's buddies was Willie Hughes from Akron Ohio, and James Green from Greenwood South Carolina. Daddy says that James was 18 when he enlisted and Daddy was like a big brother to him. One of Daddy's officers on one of his ships was a Theo Ball, not sure of his hometown.
If this helps Daddy was on several ships while in the navy. His first ship was the SS Bernard N Baker. The second ship was the SS Stan Dillanvers. The last ship was the George W Livey he was on this ship for 13 months and he crossed the Atlantic Ocean 24 times during his stay in the Navy. If anyone remembers Daddy, please contact me for a possible reunion or at least to receive information as to how to contact him. His full name is James Milledge Brock
but some of his close friends called him Jimmy. He is in good health and remembers all of his friends and his Navy days fondly. Please contact me if this information rings a bell for anybody.

Sincerely, Janet Brock Bridges

Sketch by V.H. Gomm, Newbury, England, 1945

I have in my posession a pencil or charcoal portrait of Franz Schuhmacher, who was a German P.O.W. in England. The portrait bears these words (which we've partially translated from German):

To the memory of the kriegsgefangenschaft (we don't know the last word but we know gefangen means caught, so it must be to the prisoners)
In Newbury, England, dedicated V.H. Gomm 8/26/1945

I know this is a long shot, but I'm curious as to the story behind this portrait. Who did it and why? Was this after the prisoners were released?

If anyone could give me any clues, please let me know. If anyone (perhaps a Gomm) is interested in this sketch, I'd be happy to try to scan it (it might be a little big for my scanner).

Thank you.

How do I find information on people who served in WWII?

I was wondering if anyone knew how I could go about finding out information on my grandfather, who served in WWII......I am almost sure he was part of the Navy, based out of Pennsylvania. He was only about 17 or 18 when he signed up in 1942-1943. He was married to my grandmother in a blue suit, that looks more like a blue sailor suit. I appreciate any information.

Charles Binion "Binnie" Allen

My uncle, Charles Allen, is in his 90's so time is getting short. His discharge papers are wrong, so don't suggest looking at them. In fact, that's what we are posting a message about now. Binnie joined the National Guard in Iowa in 1942 and was stationed at Kauai, Hawaii. He was bored with the wait and heard about another National Guard unit from California which was heading out earlier than his group, so he asked for and received a transfer. They never gave him an "actual" rank, just acting corp, acting sgt, and later acting staff sgt. He served in the Pacific with this group his entire WWII career - 1942 until his discharge in 1945 at Leavenworth - as a PFC Surgical Tech still listed in the Iowa National Guard! No mention of the California National Guard at all - it's as if he never existed. Here's the tricky part - his memory is going and he thinks that is was the 160th Infantry, 40th Division. His capt was Dr. Levine. There were two newspaper stories in the latter part of 1944 and the first of 1945 in the L.A. newspaper. One said something about "Allen and his group of lifesavers ..." the copies that he had burned in a fire 20 years ago. Any help that we can have in this would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Eve Mardis
William A. MORRIS - Marine MIA in Bougainville

Hoping to touch base with anyone who has info on or may have known WILLIAM A. MORRIS, a Marine who was reported missing in action in WWII. Bill was my grandfather's half-brother. Bill was born 28 January 1920 in Muskegon, MI and was living in Kalamazoo, MI when he enlisted in the Marines in October, 1941. He went to boot camp at Parris Island then was stationed at Newport, RI for ten months. Was transferred to New River, SC then went to San Diego, CA about February, 1943. He went on overseas duty that April. An article in the Kalamazoo Gazette dated November 28, 1943 indicated that Private First Class William A. Morris, 23, United States Marine Corps, was reported missing in action in the South Pacific. Per family information, he was missing in action near Bougainville in the Solomon Islands and apparently never found. Are there any former Marines who knew Bill or served in that area in late November, 1943 and would have an idea what happened to him? Appreciate any information.
