In memory of Major John E. Vogel who graduated from Ohio State with a geology degree, where he was Captain of Pershing Rifles and member of Sigma Gamma Epsilon honorary, and left for Randolph Field. He joined the U.S. Army Air Forces and became a fighter pilot. He had served in the Philippines nine months and was at Nichols Field outside Manila when the Japanese attacked. He served three tours of duty in the Pacific. He died when his plane crashed September 29, 1945 and was buried in Okinawa Island Cemetery, Ryukyu, Retto, Okinawa. He was reinterred March 10, 1949 in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii, where he was born in 1919 when his father was a Captain at Ft. Shafter in WWI.
