Pembrokeshire Military memorials

For some time now I have been photographing, indexing and researching military related memorials (excluding cenotaphs) from Pembrokeshire graveyards, to date I have approximately 1,000 from 1745 to 2006. Whilst there are many CWGC headstones there are also far more mentions on family headstones.
Can I help you? if so let me know.
Rgds
Owen Vaughan

In Memory of My Uncle, Captain William A. Suber United States Army, serving in World War II

My uncle, William A. Suber was a first lieutenant during World War II and served in the Pacific around Guam and Saipan. After the war, he came home and then was recalled to duty and commissioned as a Captain, serving in the US Intelligence Service in Berlin during the 1950's. He studied and became fluent in the German language, enabling him to pass freely back and forth between East and West Berlin in his Intelligence work.Because of his blond hair and fair coloring and his mastery of the language, he could easily pass as being German, which made him extremely valuable in the work he did. I never heard him talk much at all about his experiences in the Pacific or what missions he performed in Germany.
Kern County, California War Memorial Help Needed

November 11, 2007, Kern County, California will dedicate a War Memorial listing Kern County men and women who have been killed in action / combat.

If you have a family member who was from Kern County and was killed in any of the Wars, please see the list below and make sure your relative is appearing - with correct spelling and correct hometown. Final data must be to the engraver by the end of September 2007.

Reply to this e-mail or contact Ken Hooper at
hooper93301@gmail.com

List of Kern County Service Men Killed-in-Action (KIA)

For our identification purposes, each serviceman is assigned a “case number.” The number at the beginning of his case number indicates in what conflict he perished. Please note this list is a work in progress and is updated as new names or information is discovered.

This list is comprised of men and women who were killed in combat or in support of combat operations. The list excludes men killed in training, accidents, natural causes, disease, etc. No disrespect is intended nor implied to the men or their families for those who perished under the listed conditions.

Key: 1	World War I
2	World War II
3	Korean War
4	Vietnam War
5	War in Afghanistan and Iraq

Date last updated: 9-15-07
Last number used: 5.576 Ramon A.
War Memorial

I found the information below on the internet a good while back. It is about a weekly Oberwarther Sonntagszeitung. Does anyone know where I might be able to get a copy of this issue or anything about it? My relatives are on this list and lived in Chicago when they donated the money to the Memorial

According to the weekly Oberwarther Sonntagszeitung of 8 June 1924 the following "fellow countrymen in America" donated money for the War Memorial in Riedlingsdorf:

Johann BRUCKNER 5127 Barriart 2 D., Tobias SCHUH 6156 2 D., Johann KURTZ, Johann SCHUH, Samuel SCHADEN, Michael und Fr. KIRNBAUER je 1 D., Tobias SCHUH 144, Samuel WAGNER, Samuel WOMACKA je 2; Michael WAGNER, 3; Tobias REHBERGER 131, Johann NEID 82, Johann ZAPFEL 130, Franz ZAPFEL 130, M. SCHMITT, Wiesfleck je 2; Maria SCHADEN 0.50; Johann REHBERGER 117, Johann und Paulina KEIPPEL 20, je 2 d; Tob. und Ros. BAUER 86, 5 d; An. WETH 2 d.; Sam. HERMANN von Tauchen 1 d; Josef KLUG, Bernstein, 0.50 d; Tobias SPIEGEL 55, Elisabeth PIFF 92, Michael SCHUH 144, HEILEMANN, Samuel FLECK 88, 2 d; John ZAPFEL 1 d; Franz KEIPPEL 20 2 d; John BÖHM 20, 5 d; Tobias ZAPFEL 21, 5 d; Johann HACKER 1 d; Samuel FLECK 126, 2 d; Samuel HEROLD 163, 5 d; Samuel ZIERMANN 112, 2 d; Charles FLECK, Samuel KEIPPEL 20, Johann PRISCHING 88, Tobias STEGER 54, Pauline BEIER, Johann KARNER je 1; Samuel STEGER 2; Franz BRUCKNER Nr. 211, Johann GABRIEL 132, Mike SCHIEBINGER je 1 d.

So this list says that Tobias ZAPFEL, originally of Riedlingsdorf # 21, lived in America (Chicago most likely, as an earlier list of donators from 1923 tells) in 1924 and donated 5 Dollars for the War Memorial of Riedlingsdorf.

I am attaching a picture of the War Memorial in Austria.

Benjamin F Runyan of Indiana died as a POW in Philippines

Benjamin F. Runyan of Clinton, Indiana in Vermillion County was captured during the initial stages of World War II in the Philippines. He was born in 1923 and enlisted in the U.S. Army at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis. He was in the 31st Infantry Regiment and died as a POW at Camp 4 "O-Donel) in Tarlac, Philippines on Luzon Island, May 8, 1942. He is buried at Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

On our intial visit to the Manila American cemetery we had an instant realization that few families had ever visited these graves. I wondered if we could find a few families of these men. I took a handful of photos of the white crosses with the inscriptions and returned to our home. Weeks late we located our first family. Since that time we have fortunately been able to contact 150 families of Indiana servicemen killed in this region during World War II. Additionally we have located another forty across America despite our Indiana focus.

We hope you can help us find the family of Benjamin F. Runyan. Here is some information we have including a reference we located at the Indiana State Library. We only have the reference information and not the actual contents of the newspaper notice. We hope you can help us find this also.

Please visit our website and see photos and information about hundreds of Indiana servicemen. If you are a friend, neighbor or relative of any of the men honored here at Manila American Cemetery, we will gladly send photos if we possibly can. The photos are always free.

http://fizkid.tripod.com/

Dave and Apple Dwiggins
San Pablo City, Philippines

As many people do, I have several relatives who were in World War II (both grandfathers, Great Uncles, etc.) & thought I would let everyone who checks this message board know that on 29 May 2004 there will be a World War II Memorial Dedication in D. C..

If you would like to register a relative, friend or let someone else know how to register someone the internet address is:
www.wwiimemorial.com or you may call: 1-800-639-4992.
This was listed as a snipet in Atlanta's AJC so I am not sure how many papers have mentioned this & thought it would be a great idea to pass on :)!

Sincerely,
Helena-Suzanne

I miss my father very much. He was a paratrooper with the 503rd that jumped on Corregidor. He was in the Pacific Theater. He made it through all of that at a very young age to end up with lung cancer and dying at a young age of 68. He was a wonderful father. I always knew he would take care of us and a I lost a lot when he died. But, he is still with me all the time. I talk of his WW II experiences whenever I can. He was so proud of his service to the USA but I could tell that he also had trouble at times with all the deaths and suffering he saw.
I miss you daddy.

Love - your daughter
Rosemary

Lt. William D. Kissinger, USAAF

My father was a navigator on a B-17 , The Fertile Myrtle. He flew 25 missions over Germany, received two distinguished flying crosses, five air medals, and turned down several purple hearts because he wasn't "wounded badly enough". Yet I didn't know( until I was 14 years old and saw the blue boxes in his dresser drawer) that he was a decorated veteran. I took him to see "Memphis Bell", both the Movie and the real one. As we waited for the plane to take off, we stood in the prop wash to feel the wind ruffle our hair and get spattered with oil, like the guys did 50 years ago. It was a surreal moment. Yet Dad never felt he did anything extraordinary. Tom Brokaw certainly said it best when he called my father's generation the "Greatest Generation." As Dad said,"They did what they had to do, because there WAS no other choice." Dad, I love and miss you, and I'm proud to be printing this memorial page to place you along with so many other fine and deserving folks. To all veterans of all wars, THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart.
Clinton C. Kwaak

On June 6th 1994, 06.30 a.m. I (Rob) was standing on Omaha Beach, Normandy.
It was a very impressive moment for me. Standing on the exact same place, at the exact same time 50 years later.
On a statue near the Normandy American Cemetery St. Laurent-sur-Mer, I found the name of Clinton C. Kwaak. For no particular reason my attention was drawn to this name.
Since then Clinton C. Kwaak has been the name of the person that more or less represents for me all other men and women who fought those days on these French beaches.
The facts about Clinton Kwaak now available to us are:
Clinton C. Kwaak
Technician 5th Class, U.S. Army
12056671
1st Signal Company, 1st Infantry Division
Entered the Service from New York
Died: June 6, 1944
Buried at: Plot G Row 26 Grave 8
Normandy American Cemetery
St. Laurent-sur-Mer
Awards: Purple Heart
We would like to find out more about Clinton Kwaak, where he was born, where he lived, who is family is, who were his friends and buddies.
It would be a true honor if we could make a portrait of this man who fought and died on D-Day. This web site would be the place where this portrait would become available for anyone who is truly interested.
Any shred of information about Clinton Kwaak, a picture of him, his life, his family, his army unit, what happened to him on June 6 1944, anything will be more than welcome. We will treat his personal information respectfully off course.
www.backtonormandy.org

My Grandfather was KIA July 27, 1944 in France. He was in the 2d Armored Division, 82nd Reconnaissance Battalion. When I started researching a little over a year ago we knew very little about him. We didn't even know his division, birthday, or where he was buried. I have since found his best friend and 2 other men who served with him! I have been very very fortunate. Until I started researching I did not truly appreciate what him and all of the other men had done during the war. I have written a story about him for my family, but I would love to find some way to make sure that my generation and the next does not forget what they did for us.

I want to thank him for serving our country and for coming home safe so he could meet my Mom and I could be here :-)
Having recently been to the Arizona Memorial, I saw copies of letters that went home to wives and mothers that their men wouldn't be returning, broke my heart and made me even more thankful that my Grandmother didn't receive a letter like that.
Robert J.
Henry Franklin Thaw, EMC1, USN, Asiatic Fleet

My grandfather Henry Franklin Thaw put in 8 years of service before joining the Navy again for the war. He was assigned on the USS Edsall DD219 of the Asiatic Fleet.

The Asiatic Fleet has not received it due recognition in History books or Documentaries, and by the government. Never forget those who were assigned in the Asiatic Fleet. They went even though they KNEW they were to be sacrificed. My grandfather left his wife, and two children to support his country. Nine months after he left, my mother was born. The USS Edsall was sunk 3/1/1942, one month before my mother turned two. She would never meet her father.

The Asiatic Fleet "held ground" until reinforcements could come in. Sadly, the ships of the Asiatic Fleet were destroyed and the Asiatic Fleet was no more.

Please support the WWII memorial in DC. And if anyone out there has lost a relative to the Pacific Theater during WWII, KIA or MIA. Check with the MANILA AMERICAN CEMETERY AND MEMORIAL, MANILA, REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES. FORT BONIFACIO. I've recently discovered my grandfather's name had been permanently engraved in The WWII Tablets Wall of the Missing.

Please visit Henry Franklin Thaw at www.lonesailor.org in the Navy Log. He will NOT be forgotten.

George Hull, Sr., WWII - Remembered

My father, George Hull was drafted as soon as he graduated from Central High School, Providence, Rhode Island, with honors. He was only 18. He served in the U.S. Army for four years, seeing and experiencing the horrors of war and death. He lost many friends and most saddly, a large part of himself in that war...so I'm told.

However, it was his wife Cornelia (Jarrett) Hull and his children George, Jr., Lorraine (me), Dianne, and Virginia who saw the pain that he lived with. He had vivid nightmares, night sweats, emotional trauma....most of the nights that we remember growing up. He was wounded and received the purple heart, as well as several metals of valor.

This man, my father, was the best man of anyone I have ever known. He was born on January 30, 1924, and died October 28th, 1986. We still feel his presence....and miss his dearly.

It would be nice to know that someone out there knew my father during the war....if so, please write me in care of the above email address or at lsymonds@ccri.cc.ri.us.

Dear Grandpa,

Tomarrow marks the day that you and your brave crew were found, crashed with no one alive. Although we have never met I know it was you that met me and helped both myself and joey. I have carried that image through the journey to discover you and along the way I found a home in AWON, the American War Orphans Network, and soon that memorial will be built.
I love you and I miss you and look for the little signs in life to let me know your here and never forgotten.

Your Granddaughter
Trisha

My father, Arthur Moses Shults, was killed in action April 20, 1945 on Jolo Island in the Philippines. He was in the Army and on a combat rifle team with Co. A, 163rd Infantry. He had just turned 30.
My mother, Eula (Large) Shults, spent all of her life taking care of what she called "you younguns" -- there are five of us. Mom talked with Arthur through his picture that always was there on the living room wall. She never remarried. She passed away while sleeping January 24, 2000.
We love you, Mom and Dad. May you rest in God's peace together.
I have posted a memorial at www.shadowinks.com. Please come and visit a while.
major hal m terry, air force, retired was my uncle. he is now deceased. when he died, my aunt was given the usa flag used on his grave. this is a valuable thing to have but what do you do with it. the cementary in the town they lived was asking for these flags. on memorial & veterans day they fly on poles down the main drive of the cementary. each veteran has a plaque with his or hers name on it at the base of pole. i have not been there but have seen pictures. this is a wonderful way to display the flags & is a memorial to our veterans.

My Father and 4 Uncles: Worthy and Dover

I am very proud to say that my Father, William Carl Worthy, who at age 35, joined the US Navy and served aboard a Destroyer in the Atlantic Theater. His two brothers, Velven Worthy and Kenneth Worthy, both served with the US Army; Uncle Kenneth with Merrill's Maurauders in Burma, and Uncle Velven in the European Theater.

My Mother's two brothers, Uncle Doy Dover and Uncle Dillard Dover, both served in the US Navy in the Pacific Theater.

Because of my Father's and Uncles' service and patriotism, I grew up a patriotic person, very proud of our Military, and their service in it. So much so that I joined the US Air Force when I finished high school!

Sherry Worthy Horn

Although neither of them died during WW2, both served proudly and have since passed on- my father, tragically, in a car accident in 1960 and my uncle during the late 1980s. I would like to salute all veterans, but these two members of my family, in particular. To Everett Howard JAGGERS, known as Jag, and to Emory Keith JAGGERS, known as Sparky.....I salute you!

To all the men who served with my father, I salute you for being the group of men that you were, you made up Co.D 162nd Inf.! My father Staff Sargent Clarence (Pete to his friends)H. Henry was also a member of this company and he was one heck of guy. So I figure the rest of you who knew him already know that. I regret that I and my son(his first grandson) was unable to get to know him better, for we lost him on July 19, 1984. We truly do miss his presence in our lives. But I am thankful you all helped each other make it home from there, wherever the there might have been. Again I salute you for making this country a land where we still have our freedoms, and the ability to speak and worship however we choose. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you have done in the name of honor, pride, and for those you left behind. Nelda M. Henry
