There were survivors from the SS John A Poor. I was an 18 year old Cadet aboard the British merchant ship SS Fort Walsh which picked 35 survivors from 3 rafts in the Indian Ocean and landed them in Colombo, Ceylon. There is an interesting reference to this in a March 26, 1944 notation in a WW2 journal maintained by Griffith Baily Coale which can be found at thefollowing link:
