SS Albert Gallatin?

The family story was that my uncle was a merchant marine in WWII. I have found his name (Sengebusch, so it's uncommon)associated with the Albert Gallatin. Was that a merchant marine ship? Also, he suffered what used to be called shell shock, but now is PTSS and spent time in a veteran's hospital . The Gallatin seems to have gone down in the Arabian Sea, but the story was "it was cold" in the water.
