You would likely need to check British newspapers and have a general idea of when the piece was written. Here's a quick run down of her service history to help you narrow down the possible dates and convoy actions.



Three rescue ships Rathlin, Zaafaran and Zamalek were with the ill fated PQ17. After the convoy was scattered Zaafaran was sunk by a Junkers Ju 88 bomber, Zamalek came under sustained dive bomber attack and narrowly avoided destruction and Rathlin shot down a Focke Wulf Condor which attempted to bomb her.

Allocated for service as a Convoy Rescue Ship and was converted at Govan by Barclay, Curle & Co Ltd.

Conversion completed, she sailed from the Clyde on her first voyage in Convoy OB 291 and over the next 4 years she escorted 68 Convoys and rescued a total of 665 survivors (the highest number of rescues of all of the CRS’s) from 19 sunken ships, including 216 from 7 ships sunk in Convoy PQ 17 (also escorted by her sister ZAAFARAN and her consort RATHLIN) and even 4 from U–523 which had also been sunk.

Arrived on the Clyde in Convoy HX 357 from Halifax N.S. on completion of her wartime service and for return to her owners.

She was scuttled by the Egyptians in Suez Harbour during the Suez Crisis as a blockship and was finally cut up during clearance operations the following year.
