Death Certificates

My grandfather was in the Royal Naval Patrol service. He was killed in 1940 when the ship he was on was hit. He died whilst saving another man's life. My grandmother got the standard black edged telegram, but as far as we are aware never had a death certificate for him. Does anyone know if death certificates were issued for those who died at sea and if so who issued them? Any help would be great. Thanks

The family story was that my uncle was a merchant marine in WWII. I have found his name (Sengebusch, so it's uncommon)associated with the Albert Gallatin. Was that a merchant marine ship? Also, he suffered what used to be called shell shock, but now is PTSS and spent time in a veteran's hospital . The Gallatin seems to have gone down in the Arabian Sea, but the story was "it was cold" in the water.
Am I un the wrong track?

Trying to find death place & date for my uncle, William (Bill) Charles SHUMAN (b. 2 Oct 1893). He was living Philadelphia PA in 1959, last I heard from him. He was planning to retire, possibly to New Jersey. In WWII he was a Commander in the Naval Reserve & a Chief Engineer in the Merchant Marines, (prompting us to call him our Commander & Chief),having had at least 3 ships torpedoed out from under him. Is there someplace I could write to see if he retired on a pension from the Merchant Marines? I do not find him on the Soc Sec Death Index. Any help appreciated. Mary (Bragg) Godsell.

I am doing research on the Merchant ships and cruises that my father-in-law took. His name is Walter Bennett and he was in the Merchant Marines from 1939 until 1948. He served as messman, cook, chief cook, steward and chief steward. One cruise left from San Francisco Feb. 19, 1943 and ended in Sydney, Australia Nov. 30, 1943. I don't know what the name of this ship was. He also made a trip to Helsinki, Finland on the Stephen P. Austin. I have a photo of him and the crew in the ice. I don't know when this cruise was. I have some info about some cruises but there are several gaps. July 14, 1945 from San Francisco to July 26, 1945 Seattle, Washington on the Spindle Eye. August 13, 1945 to August 15, 1945 and August 16, 1945 to March 28, 1946 on the Diamond Knot destination unknown. August 8, 1946 from San Francisco to August 26, 1946 Seattle, Washington on the Jeremiah S. Black. Sept. 28, 1946 to Dec. 31, 1946 on the Wagon Mound destination unknown. May 20, 1947 from Houston to July 7, 1947 New Orleans on the Coastal Competitor. Dec. 5, 1947 Pensacola to Feb. 16, 1948 Mobile on the Stephen Austin.

Hi All:

I'm looking for a Harold Jackson, born in or around Chester-Le-Street, County Durham, England, circa 1885 to 1898. Harold worked the transatlantic liners in the late 1920's and early 1930's. Supposedly a musician on the ships, he may have been just a crew member and had a musical hobby. Harold worked on the Canadian Pacific (Duchess?) liners at that time. Harold may have ended up in the merchant marine (likely British or Canadian) for the second war. Trying to find out where he ended up and any family connections,

Cheers,
Brian

Both have passed on now. There is no family left of that era who can tell me more.

One Uncle, Fred Easton, was on two or three ships that were torpedoed and suffered badly throughout his life with shell shock.

Does anyone know if I will be able to find their service records with only their names, places of birth and birthdates?

Would anyone have information on a ship travelling from Cape Town to the U.K. that was torpedoed in the first part of 1943? I think it might have been a Union Castle ship, possibly the Roxburgh Castle which was sunk off the Azores in February 1943. I would like to know more about this ship and what happened to the survivors, i.e., how many there were, who picked them up, where they were taken, etc. If anyone knows of another ship that was torpedoed during the early part of 1943 between Cape Town and Gt. Britain, would you kindly let me know. Many thanks, Linda Williams

My father, Charles Vincent Connelly, was a Merchant Marine during WWII. He served on several ships. One of those ships took oil to help those fighting Rommel in Africa. According the the "family story" he was in the Indian Ocean. His ship was torpedoed and sunk. There were several survivors, one of whom was my Dad. He may have been have been on the way to Celan India. My Mom thinks this may have been in December of 1942 or Jan/Feb 1943. She is not sure of dates. My question is does anyone have any information on this incident. I don't have much to go on, but any help would be appreciated. I can't get any official information or learn what medals my father would have earned without a little more detail. Thanks in advance for any help.
Peggy Karol

Greetings all ~
Looking for anyone with information in regards to the Merchant Marine ship SS Robert E Lee which was torpedoed in the Gulf of Mexico by U-166 on 07/30/42. Of the 131 crew that were on that ship, 240 passengers mostly rescued from other ships that had been hit, and a few armed guards - 25 in all did not survive. 10 of those were crew - 1 of which was my grandfather William Malton Caldwell. He was a firewatchman. I'm curious if anyone else has any ancestors related to this tragedy or perhaps there are any survivors out there who may have known him. He was already in his 60's at the time of the sinking. Thank you, hope everyone is well and safe.
kath

My Father, Olan Garnet Willis (b. 1905) was a Captain in the U.S. Merchant Marine from roughly 1942-45. I have no other information about his service except that it was largely in the Atlantic and European waters. I'd appreciate any information about what ship(s) he served on, where he traveled, etc. My parents were divorced when I was an infant, so I never knew my Father. I've only recently learned of this WW2 service.

I am trying to find a brother that I have never met, his name is Juan Morales his birthday is october 27,1919, I was told by my other brothers that after the army, he left home in 1945 to join the merchant Marines, we had once heard that he was a hero of some sort around the late 40's or earily 50's, He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, and that is where he joined the military. I. know that he could have passed on, but he just might have a family out their, that could fill in the missing part of his life that I don't know about. I just pray that someone out their could help me.
In my heart I feel that he is still alive, becouse my dad lived to be 99, and my uncle just passed this year, and he was 103, and my other brothers don't look their age. Even if you don't know him, please tell me how or where I might start looking

Warren J Baldwin , Merchant Marine

Does anyone have info on a Warren Jay Baldwin
stationed in california near Treasure Island
during WW2?? He went with, maybe married,
Lucille Dorcik who was also in the Navy. I was born on April 14, 1947, eight months
after my mothers discharge from the service.
I need some family history to do a family
tree and it would be nice to know if he
is alive or dead. I have never seen him or
talked to him. I once talked to his
mother in 1959 or 60 but I never got the
chance to talk to him. I would appreciate
any help.
My father will be 80 years old in June of 2000. Were having a family reunion and giving him a family history book. If anyone knows of anyone who served on the USS Sandwich during WWll please contact me. I think it would be great to have photos of the ship in the book. If anyone who served has a story or two to tell, please contact me. Thank you William Sewell
