Patsy Lewis Mennel, 92, of Fostoria, Ohio died Monday, Oct. 11, 2010, at the Good Shepherd Home with her family at her side.
Born in Catawba, Virginia, (Roanoke County) on Jan. 29, 1918, to William and Mabel (Lowry) Lewis, she grew up on her family farm.
She graduated from Andrew Lewis High School in Salem, Va., in 1939 and from the University Of Virginia Hospital School of Nursing in 1941 with an RN degree.

Patsy enlisted in the United States Army in April 1942 as an Army Nurse. She was stationed at Accra, Gold Coast, (now Ghana), Africa where she became engaged to Donald McKisson Mennel. Following a courtship on the beaches and in the officers’ clubs, they were married in her parents’ home in Virginia on May 17, 1945, by her brother-in-law. She was discharged from the Army in October 1945. Following discharge, she and her husband relocated to Fostoria, Ohio, where she raised her family.

She later became a nurse for the Fostoria City Schools, and volunteered as a trustee at the Good Shepherd Home and for the American Red Cross.
She is survived by her husband, Donald M. Mennel; three children, Donald L. (Louise) Mennel, James R. (Susan) Mennel, and John W. (Suzi) Mennel; sister, Catherine Wilson of Vancouver, Wash.; and grandchildren, Adrienne M. (Matthew) Peak, D. Ford Mennel, Drew A. (Melinda) Mennel, Ashley J. (Gerald) Reinhart, Michael J. (Elizabeth) Mennel, Kristian N. Judd, Jaymes L. (Amanda) Mennel, and Katherine E. (Brett) Gleason. She also has 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Marie Brookes; brothers, Randolf and James Lewis; and nephew, Samuel Lewis.
Memorial services will be Saturday, Oct. 23, at 10:30 a.m. at The First Presbyterian Church, Fostoria, where she has been a lifelong member, with the Rev. Beth Zuehlke officiating, and interment following at Woodlawn Cemetery, Toledo, Ohio at a later date.
Those wishing to make a memorial contribution are asked to consider the First Presbyterian Church or the Geary Family YMCA, all of Fostoria, Ohio.
