COLUMBUS, Ohio – Janet Louise (Weisert) Stevens died peacefully in her sleep on May 2, 2008 at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus, Ohio after a brief illness.

She was born on Nov. 11, 1920 at home in Columbus, Ohio to Florence and William Weisert. She was the youngest of nine children.

Janet is survived by her son, Mark (Sue) Stevens; grandson, Dylan Stevens; sister, Eleanor Jester of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul; and seven siblings.

Janet grew up on the West side of Columbus, attended Broad Street Elementary and graduated from West High School. She graduated from the Ohio State University School of Nursing where she met Paul. Following graduation in 1943, she enlisted in the Army Nurse Corp. She had to travel to Pittsburgh to enlist in Pennsylvania, as she was too small to meet Ohio’s induction requirements. During WWII, she served in France. Of special note was her service in a field hospital during the Battle of the Bulge, of which she never spoke. Janet was released from service as a 2nd Lt.

Following her service, Janet and Paul married at the Hilltop Evangelical Lutheran Church, Columbus, Ohio on March 9, 1946. Their only child, Mark, was born in Youngstown, Ohio on March 9, 1948. For virtually all of their married life, Janet and Paul lived in Poland, Ohio and belonged to the First Unitarian Church of Youngstown.

Janet was active in the League of Women Voters, the Poland Women’s Club and other organizations. When Paul was president of the Welsh National Gymanfa Ganu Association, Janet did yeoman’s service enriching Paul’s term of office and years on the Executive Board.

In Janet’s later years, she became especially close to her sister Eleanor, niece Judy (Guthrie) and her family. Once her grandson Dylan was born, he became the most important aspect of her life.

A memorial service will be held at a later date for immediate family and dear friends.
