Clara Dryden, East African Military Nursing Service

Hello, I'm researching Clara Martha Dryden (c. 1904 - 1944).

I know she served with the East African Military Nursing Service (EAMNS) during World War Two - this is her Commonwealth War Graves entry: http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=25... - but I'm trying to find out more about what she did and where exactly she served (Kenya? Mogadishu?). Indeed information about EAMNS itself seems to be incredibly hard to find.

Born in South Africa, she was the daughter of Henry Norris Dryden (c.1874-c.1957) and Henrietta Christine Brink. She had three brothers and three sisters.

She died on February 12 1944 onboard the S.S. Khedive Ismail when it was attacked by the Japanese U-Boat I-27, commanded by Lt-Cdr Toshiaki Fukumura.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Khedive_Ismail

Clara Dryden is listed among the "Service and Mercantile women lost at sea during the Second World War" in the book, "Beyond the Call of Duty: The loss of British Commonwealth mercantile and service women at sea during the Second World War" by Brian James Crabb: http://www.ipresent.co.uk/lostWomen.htm

She is also in the "Casualty List for SS Khedive Ismail" in "Gender and Warfare in the Twentieth Century", edited by Angela K. Smith: http://tinyurl.com/5rj9gq

I seem to have more information about how she died than how she lived.

Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Craig

Once her grandson Dylan was born, he became the most important aspect of her life.

A memorial service will be held at a later date for immediate family and dear friends.

Schoedinger Worthington Chapel is assisting the family.

Visit www.schoedinger.com to send condolences.
COURTESY POST

I would like to hear from anyone who knew anything about my mother. She went to Kentucky Baptist Hospital in Louisville KY for her nurses training; she was a registered nurse and she was a naval lieutenant in WW II. She left the Navy in 1952 and moved to New York with her husband Luke Amereno. She died in 1980 and I was barely out of my teens. I really enjoyed hearing her stories about her friends in the Navy and all. I would like very much to hear from anyone who has family that may have known her or maybe there is someone out there that knew her themselves. PLease write if you do. My email is Maxmmwarp@aol.com Thank you. Michele Harris

MAJ Eleanor Bell Pitman, ANC. My Aunt Nell served as an Army nurse from 1942 through 1945. She was born in Lamaline, Newfoundland in 1900. She immigrated to Boston in the '20s where she received nurses training at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). After Pearl Harbor, MGH formed an Army medical unit which became the 6th General Hospital. Nell, although in her 40s, joined as a 2Lt. The unit trained at Camp Blanding, FL (now an Army National Guard training center). They sailed for North Africa following the invaision and set up shop in Casablanca. They later moved to Italy with the 5th Army and remained there through the end of the War. Nell, by this time, was a Major and a Chief Nurse. She returned to civilian life and the MGH until her retirement in 1962. She never married, but continued to work as a private nurse in Florida for several years. She returned to Newfoundland in her final years and passed away there in 1989.

Angel of Bata'an, Earlyn Black "Blackie" Harding

http://stories.dailytimes.com/story.lasso?ewcd=b1dac402416fe...

WWII POW dies at 88
By Alison Beshur
The Daily Times
Published August 24, 2007

From her nice-mannered, reserved nature, it might be hard to guess Earlyn “Blackie” Harding was one of the last surviving woman prisoners of war in Japan during World War II.

Harding died last week. She was 88. Her place in history remains embedded in the memories of other area veterans and inscribed in several books. The cover of one of the books,
“We Band of Angels: The Untold Story of American Nurses Trapped on Bataan by the Japanese,” includes a photo of Harding and other nurses who were released after nearly three years in a Japanese prison camp.

There were only 66 U.S. Army nurses serving in the Philippines. Many of them, including Harding, were part of a small group of 88 women POWs from World War II, according to the Women in Military Service for America Memorial Foundation.

Dr. Mary E. Walker, a Civil War Army contract surgeon, is the only other woman in U.S. history to precede those 88 World War II women POWs.

Harding’s son, Jac, said his mother grew up on a Texas farm in Limestone County during the Depression. The only child studied nursing at Baylor University and became a registered nurse in 1938. She worked as a civilian nurse for a few years before going to the Philippines in June 1941. Before the bombing of Pearl Harbor, life on the island included sport activities and nightly dances, Jac Harding said.

Earlyn Harding didn’t talk much about her war experience until about 10 years ago, when she shared parts of a diary and notes she had written afterward.

She never seemed to harbor mental anguish as a result of her experience. The long-time smoker suffered some physical problems because of the damp, diseased conditions of the prison camps, Jac Harding said. After World War II, Harding remained a nurse reservist until 1950. Then, she stayed at home and reared Jac and his sister, Sandra, and developed
an interest in weaving and gardening.

She continued those hobbies long after moving to Kerrville in 1986. She also joined the local veterans group for former POWs and was highly regarded among its members. Nina Weinberg admired Harding for enduring the harsh conditions of a Japanese prisoner of war camp. “It was a horrible experience, but she survived,” Weinberg said of her
long-time friend. “She was a really nice person and everybody liked her.”

Jim Ridout, another member of the group, echoed Weinberg’s remarks about Harding, who survived some of the worst- known conditions faced by war-time prisoners.

“I would much rather be in a prison of Germans than Japanese,” said Ridout, who spent more than a month in a German prison camp. “She’s just one of a breed that’s long gone.”

xxx

Five remain.

In accordance with Title 17 U.S.C.
895th Medical Professional Services (MPS)

I was a medic in the 895th Medical Professional Services (MPS) when the Pacific war ended in 1945.
The 895th was a mobile surgical outfit in training at Ft. Lewis, Washington. It comprised about 25 vans, doctors, nurses and medical technicians.

I am interested in contacting former members, or hearing from their famillies. Also interested in documentation of the history of the outfit.

At the request of the head nurse I took formal pictures of the nurses and forwarded copies to each one wherever they were reassigned. I have a list of all the nurses and their nurse serial numbers but have not been able to find any because the list had their maiden names.

Thank you for any information you can supply.
john.geisinger@juno.com
Lt. Mary Sue Sims, ANC

Lt. Mary Sue Sims was a nurse during WW II. She served in a base hospital in England beginning in February, 1944 and ending in Aug. 1944. She and I, Ist Lt. William G. Nitchell, a pilot with the 306th Bomb Group, 368 Bomb Squadron, were married on June 27, 1944 near Stockbridge, England. Ours was the first wedding the unit had ever had, and everyone from the Commanding Officer on down celebrated with us.

Before we married Sue had served during the early days of the D Day invasion. Her hospital was a direct receiving hospital for the wounded from that fight. She worked 8 hrs. on and 8 hres. off from D Day, June 6, 1944, until the middle of August.

At that time, she found she was pregnant with our first child. She didn't want to report the fact because her hospital was being sent to France, to Paris. Her firend, one of the Dr.'s, persuaded her to go ahead and report.

As a result, she was detached from her unit, and sent home for a dischanrge. He unit left for France the day she left it. Our daughter, Patricia Alice Mitchell, was born on March 30, 1945. Sue continued nursing in a civilaian capacity.

Annie Ruth Howell, US Army Nurse Corps, WWII

Annie Ruth Howell Watkins, RN
12/10/1921 - 02/1/1994

Annie Ruth Howell was from the country backwoods of Florida. She trained at the State Hospital Nursing School in Chattahoochie, FL. After graduating with her RN she joined the Army Nurse Corps.

Annie Ruth served overseas in World War II, she was in Great Britain and later on the continent.

She never said much about her experiences to the younger generations - but when it came to talking with her cousins (those cousins included my mother who served in the USAF at the end of the Korean Conflict and my mother's youngest sister who also served in the USAF overseas in Turkey) who had also seen service as RN's - the conversation would last for hours and hours.

The women in Annie Ruth's family have a long and proud tradition of service in our country's military branches. As of this date, we can positively state that the women of this family have served from WWI to the Gulf War.
My deceased mother-in law was commissioned a 2nd Lt, upon her graduation from Rex Hospital School of Nursing, in the Army Nurse Corps as an operating room nurse on 1 May 1942. She was from Raleigh, NC. She was assigned to the 5th Evacuation Hospital in England (APO 230). She arrived in France in June 1944 as part of the envasion force.
"Dot" passed away in 1989 and I am trying to write her history. I am retired Army so I think that her time in France is important. Her maiden name was Stevens and she lived in Smithfield, NC.
Does anyone remember her?
