Right, that sorts out his birth and name.
Leave the rest of that info for now, there is potentially too much of Chinese whispers and through a glass darkly about all that info.
Also, specifics and information sources matter, e.g., when did you talk to his brother, and did anyone make a note of his unit and military service number ?, that's pretty crucial information, and what happened to the missing in action notification document ?, hardly the sort of document that would be thrown away.
Nor did you say to whom the picture was sent.
None of the death registrations on the Commonwealth War Graves site matches George's details, nor is there a matching military or civilian, British mainland or overseas, death registration for him for the mid to late 1940's.
He was born as George Parry, ( = exact name/names ).
His birth was registered in the Hunslet registration district in Leeds, County Yorkshire.
His birth was registered in the Oct/Nov/Dec quarter of the year, which corresponds to a birth date in September, because parents have 6 weeks in which to register a birth.
There was only one other birth in 1916 which might, or could, have corresponded to a September birth date.
That was George Perry, ( exact name ), who was born in Mile End Old Town in London in 1916, and his birth was also registered in the Oct/Nov/Dec quarter of the year.
Now, up to the end of 2006 there are 4 death registrations for people called, ( exact name ), George Perry and who were born in 1916.
However, only one of those death registrations is for someone who was born in September 1916, and that was for, George Perry, born 20th September 1916,and whose death was registered in Leeds, County Yorkshire, in the April/May/June quarter of 1976.
That's several mighty big coincidences, and coincidences do happen, nevertheless though, and until proven otherwise, I strongly suspect that George might well have survived the war and that is his death registration.
He might not have realised that he had been postedmissing presumed killed, unlikely, although perhaps he suffered injuries which affected his thinking.
Reading between the lines though, suggests to me that there is an unstated sub plot to this story, which suggests to me that there may have been some sort of family disruption, and if so, that situation might provide a reason as to why George might not have been over eager to re-establish contact with his family.
Specifically, taking a son to Canada, aged about 8, and then sending him back again, 5 years later, aged about 13 !, that's pretty odd, to say the least. !
Get the cert/certs, and compare his date of birth with the date of birth on the death registration and death cert.
The death cert will also give his last address and the name and address of the registrant.
You can get certs for from about £10 each from either the U.K. GRO = General Register Office, which will take about 2 weeks, or more quickly from the local registration offices.
They can be got more quickly for a higher fee.
The local offices should also be able to provide them within an hour or two if you call in person.
It would also be worthwhile to contact Leeds Council Cemetery dept. because they should be able to tell you where George was buried or cremated.

In addition, Leeds Council Electoral Registration Dept. should be able to tell you where the old electoral registers are kept, and his last address can be checked to see who else was living there and for how long.
You have to do that in person but there may be a paid archival research facility available.
