First Lieut. Francis James Golden (Frank) KIA in the Battle of Cherbourg WWII
FRIENDS OF LATE PILOT WRITE TO MOTHER
Mrs. Winfred Golden has received several letters from friends of her son, First Lieut. Frank Golden, killed in action in the Battle of Cherbourg. Golden was flight leader of a squadron of P-38's, and was killed June 22 <1944>. One of the men flying in the formation headed by Golden, wrote that the group had gone out on a "low-level buzz-bombing strafing mission," and declared: "Enemy flak grew very heavy, and my plane was hit by it. I managed to skid off, however, and brought my plane back to base. But that is the last I saw of your son".
Mrs. Golden has just returned to her home here from a visit in the south with her brother-in-law Jerry Golden, and his family, where she went on hearing of her son's death from the War Department.
She has two other boys in the Navy. Jack is aviation machinist's mate, first-class, now in Martha's Vinyard, after a period of overseas duty, and George, motor machinist's mate, first-class, in the Southwest Pacific.
Golden, Frank J, b. 06/03/1918, d. 06/22/1944, 2ND LT USARMY WWII, Plot: B 292, bur. 11/15/1948, *
