FRIENDS OF LATE PILOT WRITE TO MOTHER
Mrs. Winfred Golden has received several letters from friends of her son, First Lieut. Frank Golden, killed in action in the Battle of Cherbourg. Golden was flight leader of a squadron of P-38's, and was killed June 22 <1944>. One of the men flying in the formation headed by Golden, wrote that the group had gone out on a "low-level buzz-bombing strafing mission," and declared: "Enemy flak grew very heavy, and my plane was hit by it. I managed to skid off, however, and brought my plane back to base. But that is the last I saw of your son".
Mrs. Golden has just returned to her home here from a visit in the south with her brother-in-law Jerry Golden, and his family, where she went on hearing of her son's death from the War Department.
She has two other boys in the Navy. Jack is aviation machinist's mate, first-class, now in Martha's Vinyard, after a period of overseas duty, and George, motor machinist's mate, first-class, in the Southwest Pacific.

Golden, Frank J, b. 06/03/1918, d. 06/22/1944, 2ND LT USARMY WWII, Plot: B 292, bur. 11/15/1948, *
Resource from the National Interment Website
WALLACE, Robert Tindale - USS Arkansas 1942-1945

My great uncle, Robert Tindale Wallace (called "Mick" by the family) served aboard the USS Arkansas 1942-October 1945 as a Fire Controlman 2nd Class. Would love to hear from anyone who knew him, or those who might know about the position of Fire Controlman. Also interested in obtaining any pictures from that time, esp. showing people; a dream come true would be a picture that shows my great uncle. The following is his obituary. Thanks! Julie Wallace

Cass City Chronicle
Front Page
Vol 40, No 30
Friday, November 16, 1945

LOCAL SAILOR FATALLY INJURED ON THE DAY AFTER HIS DISCHARGE

Robt. Wallace Met Death Saturday Following Hit and Run Accident

(includes photo of Mick in naval uniform)

After receiving his discharge at the Great Lakes, Ill, separation center on Friday, following three and a half years in navy combat service, Robert Tindale Wallace, 30, son of Alfred J. Wallace, of Cass City, was fatally injured in what state police believe was a hit and run accident on M-53, two miles south of Romeo. The young man was hitchhiking to his home in Cass City and was found on the roadside at about four o'clock Saturday morning by a resident of that locality. The injured man was taken to St. Joseph's hospital in Mt. Clemens where he died about five hours later without regaining consciousness.

State police are seeking the driver of the automobile, which they believe struck Wallace. They asked that persons watch for a broken headlight as glass was found near the body.

The former sailor had recently returned to the States after service in the navy in the African, European, and Asiatic theaters. He was employed in the office of The Farm Produce Co. at Cass City when he entered the service in May, 1942, and had planned to enter again the employment of that company after his discharge.

Born in Elkland township on Aug. 19, 1915, he was graduated from the Cass City high school in 1933. When he received his discharge Friday, he held the rank of F.C. 2/c.

At the time he entered the service of his country, he was serving as worshipful master of Tyler Lodge, F. & A.M., at Cass City. While in the navy, he joined the First Presbyterian church here. Melvin R. Vender, at the Presbyterian church were largely attended Tuesday afternoon. The body lay in state at the church from noon until two o'clock, the hour of the funeral. Entombment was in Elkland cemetary where the Masonic burial rites were conducted under the leadership of Edward Golding, a past master of the society.

Mr. Wallace is survived by his father, Alfred J. Wallace; five sisters, Mrs. Ernest Croft, Mrs. Lyle Koepfgen and Mrs. James Gross, all of Cass City, Mrs. Arnold Callan of Midland and Mrs. Lester Jersey of Boyne City; and two brothers, Cameron M. and Donald Wallace, both of Cass City.

Relatives and friends who came from a distance to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Dean, Mrs. Fred Elliott, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold CAllan and daughter, Arnalee, and Mrs. Mimie Callan of Midland, Mrs. Leslie Kefgen of Bay City, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Oakes of Bad Axe, Miss Phyllis Koepfgen of Sebewaing, Mrs. Clifford Bucholz of Comstock, Mrs. William Schwegler and Edward Schwegler of Charlotte, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Johnston of Traverse City, Mr. and Mrs. Morely Tindale of Manton, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Jersey of Boyne City, and from Detroit and Pontaic, Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Nichols, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hartwick, Clinton Helwig, Clarence Dodge, Wm.
