Dear Ed,

I would love to help you research your grandfather's service. I'm helping to return the dog tag of another man who was in the 172nd, Company A. He died on July 29, 1943 on New Georgia, about a week before the Japanese gave up the fight for the Munda Airfield on August 5, 1943. Based on your grandfather's time of death, after the Airfield fight was finished, is it possible that he was wounded during the heavy fighting and passed away later of his wounds? Or it seems as though he could have been KIA during the jungle warfare, "mopping up" operations on the island after the larger battle was done. Coincidentally, my great-uncle was on the island at the exact same time, serving with the 161st I.R./25th I.D. and was involved in the heavy fighting on Guadalcanal, New Georgia, and Luzon. Our family history is very similar when it comes to WWII, it seems. You can email me at francescacumero@yahoo.com. Or visit my web site at www.ww2tags.org to get my phone number. I volunteer my time helping research and return artifacts from WWII and would be very happy to help you and the others who have posted here in your search. I know it's been a long time since you wrote this, but perhaps you'll see this note. All the best, Francesca Cumero
