1052nd Singnal Co Army WWII Photos

I was going through my father-in-law's old photos from WWII. He was in England, France and Belgium. The pictures are labeled with the guys last names only. Is there someplace I can check for a roster of the 1052 Signal co. Army that was in England about 1944 and France in about 1945? I would like to properly get them labeled before I put them on the net. Some of the names are Neiber, Sarich, Parker, Lewis, Sheerer, Ramsbey, Worm, Taylor, Purdy, Gleason, Godsian, Lariha, Kline, Reich etc
Unfortunately my father-in-law is desceased and can not tell me who these people are.

Thank You

British Army - Royal Engineers 1945 photos

My late father, Stan Foster, was a Sapper in the Royal Engineers from 1942 to his demob in 1946. I have a number of photos taken in Germany at the end of the war of my father and his army friends working and living on the railway. There are many faces in these photos and I cannot identify any of them. I would especially like to find out who my father's best friend was, who features in many of these pictures, who I know only as "Monty".

Can anyone suggest a good website where I can post these photos in the hope that someone (maybe relatives of the soldiers featured) would see them and identify them? Perhaps there is a military website that might deal with this, but I can't find anything. Can anyone help please?

Many thanks.

My father was in the 45th Infantry Division that landed at Anzio and fought through to Germany. He was among the first troops to liberate Dachau. He was a photographer and I have pictures of soldiers, with no captions. I was wondering if there is any site to post these photos. My father's name was Roy "Rip" William Ratcliff from Gowen, OK.

Hello,
Recently I attended an estate sale/auction where items from different consignors are sold. Among other things I acquired a photograph of a Navy VSB flight from 1943. Each person signed the back of the photo and listed his name and address. If you recognize any of these men as one of your family members please let me know and I will be happy to send you a digital copy of the photo.
Listed is the surname and home state of each person. Some of the handwriting is difficult to make out so let me know if you would like me to double check.
January 1, 1943, Flight 8, VSB Cecil Field, Jacksonville, Fla.
1.
Rescued WWII Photos, DUNBAR, DOYLE, SCHMIDT, ANGST, BARTZ Served US in England

As a hobby I rescued old photos that have identification on them. The photo that started it all is identified as
Kenneth DUNBAR.

He's dressed in an infantry uniform. The photo is sepia tone (the browns) so it's kind of hard to determine the color of the uniform. I believe that his shirt and tie are khaki. This is an 8x10.

Written on the back is: Kenneth DUNBAR about 1946. There's a photographers stamp on the back also that says, "This negative No. 76754 on file at PO Box 1749 Charlotte, N.C.

The other photo is a wallet size snap shot. Written around the edge of it is: Doyle, Dunbar, Schmidt, Bartz, Agnst. Camp in England. The five men are posing as if they are stacked one on top of the other. Written again on the back are the last names of the men and "Taken in Camp". Then there is an Army Examiner stamp also and a number, 39 772.

I picked these up because I believe that there is family somewhere who might like to have this treasure. After all he probably went through, it didn't need to end up in a box in an antique shop in St. Johns, Michigan.

Contact me at: digginroots@yahoo.com for details if you'd like to obtain it, or if you can point me in the direction of the family he or any of the other men would belong to.

Kathy

I am doing research for a friend and have located a young man buried in the Cambridge Amberican Cemetery. His name is Milton T. Ward, his death date, June 8, 1944. The cemetery burial is Plot D Row 4 Grave 61 He was in the U.S. Navy. My question is there anyone living close enough to get me a picture of his headstone? I know it would mean a lot, and it would make an eighty year old woman very happy. I will be glad to pay for it, either to have it e-mailed or snail-mail.
Thanking you in advance,

My father-in-law was a paratrooper in WWII. He was injured during the Normandy jump and lost his right leg. We have no pictures of him from his military days or little else for that matter. He has since passed and we are desperately trying to find photographs or other information regarding him. He was from Long Beach California born in 1921, we aren't sure what day he joined the Army or when he was released. If anyone has any photographs we would be forever greatful. Thank you.

While going through some of my father's belongings I stumbled upon this pin, a picture of him in a cowboy hat. On the frame of the pin, at the top, it says "Camp Blanding" and at the bottom of the pin it says "Florida". Just under the picture is a space which has numbers. There are 3 stars on each side of the pin. I never knew where my father was stationed but I'm thinking that he may have been stationed at Camp Blanding in Florida. Anyone know how I can get information, any kind, about the "colored" troops who were stationed at Camp Blanding?

Air Travel for Dependents after the War to Foreign Ports

Associated with the RANDOLPH query earlier on (as a mode of transporting military dependents to and from the US from foreign soil) I am anxiously and in earnest trying to quell a minor memory disruption involving the mode of our flight to Japan either in 1948 or 1949 (but possibly as early as 1947). Sis and I remember flying by Pan America's Clippership accommodation and in saying this we literally believe it was in fact a flying boat, as they were referred to. We actually harmonize in the memory of seemingly floating for countless hours up above those cotton patches of clouds and suddenly dropping down at Honolulu and at Guam and at Wake Islands, landing in the water and crawling ashore amphibian style. Brother Daniel does not remember it the way we do; he claims the clipperships were never drummed into service for such as we recollect. Is there anyone who can shed any light on this matter? I do recall reading a book many years ago in which there was an exact replica of the clippership's interior (floorplan) and a "photo" of the exterior on the cover of the book... a mystery by Leigh Deighton, I believe, entitled "....Over Water" or something to the effect. How those images empowered my memory engrams to re-envision those earlier, childhood years in that plane.
Thank you for any history you may share here... I plan to incorporate the gleaned data into a story in my Ancestry.com family tree.

WWII Photo of Father's Unit

If we were trying to find a good copy of my father's WWII unit, does anyone have a suggestion how i can go about it? All of my Dad's records were destroyed in the fire at Jefferson Barracks in STLS. We have a picture of him with his unit, but our copy is not good. It is a really wide picture. And, would it make sense if I put his unit numbers out here to see if any family has copies of other pictures with him in their pictures?

Thanks
Marvin Gardner
Son of Earl Griffin Gardner
Arkansas
I had to upload in two photos so be sure to look at both. I'm really not sure what Army outfit this is but I do know my Uncle Durwood Kane is on the left, second row, first man below the unit flag. He was from Newburgh, NY and his parents were George and Lydia Kane. Five of his six brothers also fought in WWII....Walter, James, Henry, Richard, and Joseph.

Mst. Sgt. James Robert Dickerson, USAF retired, deceased

I am looking for a photo or photos and career information about James R. Dickerson, WWII-Korea, Vietnam. He is from Coshocton, Ohio. He joined the Army first, enlisting at Ft. Hayes, Columbus, Ohio. (I think it was called Army Air Corp) back then?! Then he became career USAF. I know he was at Lowery (Lowry)AFB in Colorado before going to Korea?!. I don't know anything about his squadron, unit, division, or whatever that would help us. I know he served in England, Turkey and more. He was a guard at the Nuremberg War Trials...From his obituary... He spent retirement from USAF in Crossett, Arkansas. He was a Baptist Minister known as Brother Bob. He was married and had three sons. He died in 1990 in Crossett. Anybody know this person while in the USAF? or after? Old photos, rememberences...Thanks...

Looking for Luftwaffe Nachtjäger Ace Photo - Hans Dieter Frank

Hello all,

Help! I am looking for a photo of the Luftwaffe Nachtjäger Ace that shot down my grandfather and his crew (RCAF Sqd. 429 - flew a Wellington Bomber) on a sortie to Essen, Germany.

They were shot down on 26.July.1943 by Hauptmann (Captain) HANS-DIETER FRANK, of unit Stab I./NJG, 500 miles south of Cülenborg, Netherlands at 5.500 meters, at hour 01.30 (AM). I understand FRANK was a recipient of the German Knight Cross and that he died 27th/28th September 1943 after colliding with an Me-110 northwest of Celle, due east of Hanover. While attempting to eject, the Hptm. Frank's radio cord failed to disconnect and his neck was broken. I cannot find anymore information than this.

Does anyone know how to go about finding a photo and/or more information on this pilot? It would truly be appreciated.

Thanks,
Anne L.

Hello - I have a photograph given to me by my grandfather. It's a group panoramic shot of his group. Taken Fort Ethan Allen, Vermont and dated November 1940. My grandfather is located 3rd from the left, front row, sitting nearly at attention. Can anyone identify the other soldiers?
I've learned he was part of the "Big Red One". My grandfather is Everett G BENNETT. His nickname is "Breezy". He was honorably discharged June of 1945 as an E5 and is pictured below also.

New Caledonia Photos With Names

I have many old photos in good condition that my father took when he was stationed in New Caledonia, South Pacific, US Army. Many have names written on the back. The spelling may be incorrect and sometimes all I have is a nic-name or just a first or last name. The names are as follows:

Bill Rienert; Bill McMullin; James "Pop" Adams; Howard Bush; Curtiss "Charlie P." Melton; Ralph "Sailor" McKeen; Cottrell; Odet; Wiley; and Bill Niblock. - My father's name was Clyde Marion Boatman.

Additionally I have many uncirculated post-cards from New Caledonia and a box full of letters that he wrote from there to family in the States. If there is a name you are looking for, let me know, and when I go through the letters I can keep a look-out for the name.

My father wrote his personal story - genealogy included - which devotes a section to his Army experience, it is interesting to read what it was like in New Caledonia at this time.

I have a photo of a mystery ancestor with an Army stamp on the back that says "Passed by US Examiner Base 1747 Army." The 1747 actually could say 1741 instead. I suspect that it is a picture of or taken by my uncle, John Kolosowski, who was a Corporal in the Army Air Corps during WWII.

Is there a way to find out which base this was and where it was located?

(Also, why was it stamped? Was it a precaution against espionage?)

I have attached the photo--front and back.

Thanks for any help!

-Courtney

Inquiries about my grandfather

Dear reader,

My grandfather served with the English army at the end of WWII. He was an interpreter and hullgunner on a sherman tank. He has passed away about 15 years ago, but has always keept us thinking of him. I'm now trying to find out more about his time during the war and really want to know why he got the Military Medal? I have travelled to Hamburg (Elmshorn) and through Germany to the camps of Bergen Belsen and was even allowed to visit the Deserts Rats in the Bergen Belsen Training facility.

They tried to help me find more information on my grandfather. I tried to find more info at local archives and museums. But the only answer I got beside a few pictures of the liberation was that for real information I needed to go to London. Next week the 12 of july I will be coming to London to visit several museums and archives. I really hope you can help me make my day in London a productive one.

There are a few question I would love the have answered. I hope you can help me find these answer or forward me to the persons or institutes that can.

First a little more about my grandfather. His name like mine is Piet van Beurden he signed the many letters he wrote my grandmother (we resently rediscoverd all his loveletters) as follows:

102623 P.v.Beurde
3/4 C.L.Y. (we think this meant County London Yeomanry)
B.L.A. (we think this meant British Leberation Army)

Sometimes it said Sgt. after his name. Sometimes it said R.H.Q. (We think this meant Regimental Head Quarters)

As I said earlier he was interpreter and hullgunner probably on the tank also occupied by the regimentalcommander Major Woods.

He did have contact in 1987 with an organisation in England: Sharpshooters Yeomanry Association 10 sone Bulding, Lincolns Inn, WC2 3TT. He fought hard here in his hometown Tilburg (was born in Goirle I believe) to get an official statue for the English and Scottish part in the liberation of our town. The credits before his efforts all went to our 'homegard' who he proved didn't deserve them.

Questions
- Why did my grandfather receive the militairy medal? Is there more info that can be found than just: Bravery in the field? (he was awarded the medal by general Montgomery himself in februari 1946 in The Hague.

- What we would really like to find are transcriptions of one of his 'interrogations' they must have been kept on records and it would really give us a look into the way our grandfather worked during the waring. He was described by John Fisher who wrote a book about the Deserts rats as a tower of strength.

- where was his compagny or my grandfather in particular on the 15th-16th and 7th of april 1945. Al lot can be traced back but movements during that period are hard to discover.

- What happened in Bergen Belsen. This had to be an event that made a big impact on my grandfather.

- we read about a man named Harold Blumenson who drove my grandfather around in a jeep in Hamburg to and from his interrogation missions. We know a lot of veteran stories have been documented, is there anything we can find about him or the missions he went on with my grandfather?

- Is there any information on a battle that occured when crossing the Rijn. The battle he called 'Bazooka-Alley"

- Of course any pictures of my grandfather would be great.

- My grandfather tried to permanantly join the Britisch army there should be letter somewhere he wrote about his wish.

I hope I gave you enough info to help me on my 'quest' for information. It is an issue that has really brought our family together. I have been travelling and contact several archives but all roads are leading to London. I also heard that a search like this may have certain costs. I have talked to several family members and we have all pitched in to make the trip to london and any other costs of photocopies, books or item things payable.

I anyone has any help on how to find these types of information I would be very grateful.. Do you know any good adresses in london?

You can mail me at pietwijs@live.nl
(also if you want a photo of my grandfather at his wedding in his uniform)

Piet van Beurden

There is a man next to the truck that I don't know who he is. The picture was taken around 1945-1947.

My grandfather said that her uniform could possibly be of the Army. Her name is Penny and she is of Chanute(?)Field, Ill. It is dated 1943 Christmas, other than that I know nothing more as to who she is. I would like to know, if possible, the connection between her and my great-uncle George Bloom of DuBois, PA. He was in the Army and stationed in France and Germany. I know he was wounded, but unfortunately I know nothing of his services, because he died before I was born. I don't know why he kept her picture (he never married). If anyone has any information at all, please contact me.

My Uncle Henry O'neill was in WWII, Company I 39th infantry 9th division. I just received a photo of about 25 army soldiers one navy man, all in uniform standing in front of the Eifel Tower. My Uncle is the only man I recognize. It's a shame that the names of the other men weren't written down. I'm assumeing they must have been on leave. If anyone would be interested in seeing it let me know. I'm trying to find out more about my uncles company and division if anyone can tell me something I would appreciate it. My Uncle received several medals and was shot in the back but survived. Thanks, Jewel Brown irish126@prodigy.net
