Dorothy Jean Swingle, 86, of Zanesville, Ohio passed away at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008, with family by her side.

She was born July 11, 1921, in Davenport, Iowa, a daughter of the late Luther and Grace Painter. She graduated from Zanesville High School and attended Bridgewater State Teachers College, Boston University of Music, Ohio University and Meredith Business College in Zanesville. During World War II, she served 19 months with the Women's Army Corps in the finance department. From 1967 to 1978, Jean was a secretary at Grover Cleveland Junior High School in Zanesville. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Stovertown, Ohio where she served as organist for many years and was actively involved in the Lutheran Church Women. She was also a member of the Philo/Duncan Falls Lioness, Farm Bureau and volunteered at Bethesda Hospital and Salvation Army.

She is survived by her sons, Jeffrey (Karen) Showers and Vince (Linda) Showers; daughters, Leslie (Gary) Williams and Susan Showers; stepsons, David (Sue) Swingle, Al (Nancy) Swingle, James (Gail) Swingle and John (Teri) Swingle; stepdaughters, Ruth (John) Fabian and Joanne (Paul) Miller; a brother, Howard Painter. Surviving also: 20 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bennett Swingle, who passed away March 12, 1998; a daughter Elizabeth Grace; three sisters, Patty, Eleanor and Francis; and one brother, Ray.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today, Feb. 5, 2008 at Thompson-Farus Funeral Home in Duncan Falls, Ohio and one hour preceding the funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stovertown. The Rev. Catrina Hawkins will officiate and burial will follow in Stovertown Lutheran Church Cemetery.
