ZANESVILLE, OHIO - Betty Jane Gassaway Smith, 85, passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2008, at the Hernando Pasco Hospice in Hudson, Florida.

She was born in Jan. 23, 1923,in Redding, to the late Layfette and Margaret Frances Meckley Gassaway. Betty lived at 1226 Ridge Avenue in Zanesville with her husband, Roy, for more than 40 years. She was a wonderful wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend. She cooked and was a waitress in the area for several years. She served her country during World War II as a member of WAC, stationed in Japan working as the chief clerk in the hospital.

She is survived by a son, Orley (Teresa Ann) Smith of New Bloomington; daughters, Teresa "Teri" (Jackson) Clements of Brookville, Fla., Annette "Sis" (Bernard) Morris of Newark, OHIO and Patricia "Patty" (Donald) Lacey of Columbus, OHIO sisters, Violet Smith, Dorothy Brandfast, Delores Webb and Ella Nora Caudill; and a brother, Franklin Gassaway; sister-in-law, Annette Faye Weiser; and brother-in-law, McKinley "Mac" (Delores) Smith; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Orley "Roy" Lewis Smith; daughter, Cynthia Marie Smith; and a brother, Lafayette Gassaway Jr.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at The Snouffer Funeral Home, 1150 W. Military Road, Zanesville, OHIO.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 15, 2008, in the Snouffer Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Mark Noe officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Zanesville, OHIO.
