I also contacted the Archives and paid 20.00 for information that I already had. I also did it for my mother at the same time and the price went up to 25.00 so I just passed on that one. I hope you have better luck, my problem is that the information was lost in a fire for them both and they try to put together a file and they don't have much to go on. My question is this; if they have the unit number why can't they give information on the unit? They must have records of where that unit was located and/or served. That is going to be my next research project.

Right. WWII records are really hard to research. The US government is not exactly user-friendly for research on personnel....
I tried contacting the Archives in (St. Louis?) once before but ran into a brick wall. I think I'll try again.

Thanks again, my searches didn't turn up anything. Now how can I find out where this AAF Base was located and what squadron (by number)was she in? I have a really hard time finding military info on both my parents. There evidently was a fire that destroyed all their records.

Hi,

I found out that "CCTS" means Combat Crew Training Squadron, or School." My Dad served in the 241st CCTS in Sioux City, Iowa, in 1945. Now I'm trying to find out what he did at Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio, just before that but military records are hard to find....

AAF is probably Army Air Force. My Dad was also in the AAF CCTS but I'm not sure what the CCTS was. I know his subspecialty was Combat Intelligence and he was stationed initially at Sioux City, IA, and then transferred to action in Italy.

If you learn more about CCTS, please let me know.
Thanks.
Doug Kirkpatrick
kirkpat@charter.net
Is anyone familiar with this mailing address? The 3266 could be missing a 1 at the end (32661. It's on my mother's discharge papers which are fading badly and hard to read. Her name was Gemimia Harris (Jerry) from Cincinnati, Ohio. Her papers say she was a medical corsman or corpsman, I have a picture of her checking someone's pass as a MP. She was in just shy of a year. I think there was a fellow named Kidwell that she was friends with. Anyone remember either one or the address. I am trying to put together where she served and update her military information. She's been gone a long time. Any information would be appreciated.

She was almost definitely decoding, and likely using the first ever ENIGMA CIPHER MACHINE, first used by the US for "cryptographers" to decode messages.
By any chance was she stationed in Puerto Rico? One of the main & most secretive units on the fore-front of G2 in the Army was there, near San Juan & Buyamon.
Her name was Thelma Mae Bills, and she later married a John Patrick Rice. Before she could return home to Oklahoma after the war, she recieved a lobotamy, from the Army, for unknown reasons, other than pneumonia.
If you'd like to know more, you can email me.
Linda Nix Black
billindainokc@cox.net

According to my sister, our mom Eleanor Steliga (who was a WAAC during WWII) was in the intelligence division, but doing data entry of some kind. She said that they never told them more than they had to know, so even SHE didn't know how she fit into the big picture. She suspected that her machine was a precursor of the computer. She remembered when the Japanese code was broken, she could hear the celebration shouts in another part of the building in DC.

Hello, I just thought that I would post this picture of an unidentified lady in full navy regalia. It was taken circa 1953 in a Kresgie's department store in Montreal, Quebec. She was the spitting image of my grandmother so, her co-workers begged her to take a picture in the photo booth. At first, they thought my grandmother was playing a prank at work but it was not her afterall! Please let me know if you think this woman was a WAAC, nurse or a woman in the Navy...I don't know much about history but I am learning about the different uniforms and occupations. Thanks! See photo attached.

Ruth L. Johnson Coster

Ruth Coster was born on December 11, 1918 in Bonsal, North Carolina to Jarves and Lula (Thomas) Johnson. She was one of six children. She had three brothers: Elwood, Thomas, and Jarves Jr.; and two sisters: Rodney Harrill and Leona Morrison.

She graduated from Mangum High School in Durham County, North Carolina on May 10, 1937. She worked for a time for her sister and brother-in-law that owned an Esso gas station.
She would later join the WACS (Women’s Army Corp Service) so her parents would have a star in their window, which meant that someone from that family was serving in the military. Her brothers were working in an essential business with Standard Oil, so they were excused from service.

Ruth joined the WACS in 1943 and was transferred to New Guinea after completing her training. It was during the training for overseas duty that she met her good friend, Helen Greene Kent. Helen had trained at the University of Central Arkansas and met Ruth after leaving UCA. Ruth and Helen were sent to New Guinea.

It was on a flight from New Guinea to Australia that Helen Kent was killed. On May 13, 1945, a C-47 went down and crashed in the valley of Shangri-La, killing eighteen passengers. There were only three survivors.

Ruth Coster came to UCA in the winter of 2004, and saw the slide show of the WACS who trained at UCA. Included in this slide show are several excellent photographs of Helen Kent.

Ruth currently resides in California.

My aunt wrote a detailed account for the Carroll Co. Missouri historical society/museum books, with dates/years of her service from 1942 to retirement in the late 1960s, I believe. Her assignments were in the U.S., Britain and Germany.
I'm lucky to have what she wrote. It's quite detailed as to year and location of service.
She was buried with a military funeral in the family plot in the same county.
I'm hoping to eventually send in her record to the womens monument organization in Washington DC.
There may be other records that I can request, which will fill out her military career. The existing service records are probably available to all of next-to-kin.
Thank you so much for your reply. Please let me know how your research progresses. Linda H.
