Here are some links that might help you find information on adoption in Kentucky.
Sometimes they may allow direct family members like siblings, to have the non-id information from the adoption records if they provide a copy of a death certificate of the birth parent or parents. You could always ask to see what the rules are.

They do have the birth index at many counties in Kentucky but the names are suppose to be listed in the AMENDED ADOPTED NAME so that may not help you if that is true.

You might also want to post to all adoption boards you can find (most are free) in case she is looking for her family. You of course will have to provide the parents names, city/county/state and as much information as you have on the female.

As for your genealogy you might want to try "LDS Family Search" as they have a John and Charles Smithhart listed. The person that posted the information has his name toward the bottom of the page.

You can also check the genweb records at:
kygenweb
kygenweb archives
usgenweb search engine

I am assuming you already have access to the census records but if not, try your local Public Library as they usually have the Library Edition of Ancestry from 1790 to 1930 on their free use or research computers. Remember these are transcriptions and there are sometimes mistakes, so you can click on the link provided to read the actual scanned census page to check for mistakes and to make copies of the page or any part of the page.

You might also post to the regular Rootsweb Henderson County Kentucky (not adoption boards) for information on the family. Make sure you put the family information/names in the subject line so someone can identify it and respond.

You might also want to post to the Rootsweb surname boards for the name Smithhart.

Good Luck,
Jo
