I am trying to verify the existence of a Lutheran adoption agency that would have been located in Brooklyn, NY in 1949. There is a chance that it was located on 2nd Avenue, but I have been unable to verify this.

There is a Lutheran long term care facility on 2nd Avenue at this time, but I have no idea whether it would have been connected to an adoption service in the past.

Any information would be welcomed.

Donna Hodach-Price

Looking for my birth father. All I have are these pictures and a little information about him. My fathers Surname is Zhering or spelled Zehring. I was born in 3/23/1975 in New York. I believe my father had some form of a mental illness, as does my mother. I have the contact info for my mothers family but they know little of the whereabouts of my father and his family. Memebers of my mothers Uncle side told me that he was some sort of pilot (airplane?) I do not know if this is true or attributable to his mental illness. If anyone knows anything leading to him or any family member, please contact me. Again his surname Zehring or spelled Zhering. NY area, my birthdate was 3/23/1975. Pics are attached. Thanks much! :)

Edit: I am attaching a picture of my father and I. Due to me not knowing if he is alive, I didn't think this would be against the rules. Mods can remove it if they wish or I will if asked. Again thank you very much.

Nick

Ithaca, NY 1938 private adoption agency

Trying to locate information on an adoption that took place in 1938.

A few years back we contacted the state of NY to find out info about a friends father's biological parents. All they could tell him was that the parents were 38 the father a salesman the mother a housewife and they had 4 other children. They couldn't afford to feed another mouth so they gave him up to a private agency for adoption. He was born July 27, 1938 in Ithaca, NY.

Obviously, we would like to find out more about the family. Does anyone know where we can find more information out or try to unlock the records if the parents are deceased?

Thanks,
Jenina

Sibling Research...Upstate NY Convent 1947-50 ?

I just learned that my mother (now deceased) had a child while residing in a convent in upstate NY sometime between 1947 & 1950. Her parents are deceased as well, her brother had no additional information other than remembering she was sent away to the convent pregnant. My father, who met her some 15 years later, has no idea. I don't know where to even start, is it possible to find out this child's name, DOB, anything? I appreciate any suggestions you might have. Thanks, Ellie

Adoptee: birth name Shawn Marcel McLeish

I am looking for my birth mother, but would be happy to find anyone in the family. I'm gonna give this a try anyway! I was born in Buffalo, NY on 8/2/74. My birth name was Shawn Marcel McLeish. I am Bi-Racial. I have no idea whether my mother was white, or my father was black or anything like that. I had a brother named Damian (spelling unsure of) that was an infant when we were given up/taken away. I was 2 at the time and spent the next 8 years in foster care with various families (separated from my brother though we visited a few times) until I was adopted at age 10. I have a family of my own now and can't afford to spend the big bucks on a private investigator.
My husband of 28 years is searching for his birth mom or family in order to obtain information on medical history and heritage. He is registered with New York State and he has received non-id info. It is very scant to say the least. It did say that the mother was 21 and she did not tell her family she was pregnant because her father had a medical condition. Kirk has very long, thick black hair...green eyes and is about 5'9" tall. He is not looking for a relationship, new family or to disrupt anyones life. We as a family need to find out information for the sake of our two grown children and grandson. Please feel free to email us at pdenmark89419@yahoo.com Thank you Pat

Birth Mothers

Ali Smith works extensively in the publishing field, shooting book covers for clients including HarperCollins, Simon and Schuster, Random House, Scholastic, Little Brown and many more. She's also shot advertising jobs for A&E Television, Cosmopolitan Magazine, Blue Man Group, Easy Spirit Shoes and Jordache Jeans.

She is currently working on [a] book that features photographs of motherhood. Through words and photographs, she is telling the story of the mothers in her book ... So, now Ms. Smith is in love with the idea of photographing both a birthmother and adoptive mother together with their child. So if you are in the New York area (she requested people in the New York area) and are willing to share your story and be photographed with your child’s adoptive mother or birthmother, whichever the case may be. You can contact Ms. Smith directly at her website:

http://www.alismith.com

Reg Niles

P.S. The second paragraph is from Adoption Week e-Magazine, which I receive free each week via e-mail. You can visit them at:

http://e-magazine.adoption.com/

F Adoptee 02/21/1958 Brady Hosp Albany NY; Natalie Ann at birth, seeks birthmom and twin brothers

Female, born 2/21/1958 At Brady hospital, Albany, New York; named Natalie Ann at birth. Non-ID states birthmom was 21 yrs old; had twin boys who were about age two at the time of my birth; had graduated from high school; was orphaned at age 16 when her mother died - father died of heart attack at age 41; moved from Iowa after her mother's death to live with her brother and his wife in Albany. Adoption handled by St. Catherine's in Albany.

Birthmom who is said to have been blonde, blue eyed and unmarried would have been born approx. 1936-1937. Twin boys would have been born approx. 1955 - 1956 and they were also born at Brady Hosp.

Birthmom had no other connection that I know of with St. Catherine's after the adoption. I don't know if she married or had other children - or if she was able to keep the twins.

Adoptee is married, has children of her own and is a teacher. Would love contact with her bio family. If any of this sounds familiar, please contact lovesdonna2@yahoo.com or contact Aunt Patty through the NYAdoptees yahoo board or through the immigrantships.net Captain's bLog.

Hello all,

My name is John David Gray (born Toney) and my father died in 2003 in McAllen, TX. He was born Dec 1, 1941 in New York state and adopted by Norman John Toney and Laura Toney. They adopted him through a Lutheran Adoption agency, but not sure which.

He had done some research into his birth parents before he died, apparently he was a love child from an affair and was given up for adoption immediately after he was born.

My grandparents are dead, my father is dead but now I am interested in finding out if I can contact any living blood relatives of my father. He does have one living brother who was a natural son of my grandparents after they adopted my father.

Please contact me directly at john.gray@insightbb.com if you know of resources that would be helpful. I do not want to spend a lot of money for this search and I'm hoping I can do something quick.

Thanks,
John

Search for Anna Fisher

In 1973 I paid list price for a new hardback book titled, "The Search for Anna Fisher," by Florence Fisher--the founder of the Adoptees' Liberty Movement Association (ALMA). A few months later I was introduced to the author at the home of Betty Lifton. Also present were Katrina Maxtone-Graham and Lorraine Dusky, for a total of four authors.

Now I own so many adoption books that I have to double-shelve them (one in front of the other on the same shelf). So I can not easily find my copy of "The Search for Anna Fisher" to see if it is autographed by the author. This book helped invigorate the movement of adult adoptees who wanted to search for their natural parents and to obtain their original birth certificates.

It would be an insult to me and a lot of other people if a bookseller were to sell copies of the hardback book for one cent each--as the following vendors offer. I got their names from the Marketplace of vendors at Amazon.com.

frugalmedia01
clearancebooksale
thrift_books
betterworldbooks_

I hope some rich adoptee will do something about this. Steve Jobs, are your hearing me?

An added insult concerning this important book is that Amazon has erred in the title of the paperback reprint: "SEARCH FOR A FISHER." Somebody, please help.

Reg Niles
e-mail: RegNMINiles#cs.com
(change pound sign to at sign)
My husband was born May 21, 1965 in Manhatten NY. He was placed in foster care for 6 years before being adopted. Our daughters are now curious and we are beginning to search for his birth mother.

We do not have a lot to go on except that the mothers last name was McVicker unsure of the spelling and she was either Scottish or Irish desent. The mom was approximately 35 at the time of birth and the father 60. From what we know they were not married. It was speculated that the mother was in WACS or some form of womens military corps.

If she is still living she would be around 75 years old.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Adoptees Rights Movement

Attention all adoptees who are adults and the victims of sealed records. Is the time right? Is the political climate in the U.S. right? Will powerful people, like Sen. Chuck Schumer in my state, support the adult adoptees?

Is the time right to request an apology from the federal government for what they did to you? I say "you" and not "us" because I am not an adoptee. In my opinion, a formal apology from a government body, such as the Senate, should come about four years before adoptees demand reparations for their suffering.

Of course, the sealed records laws have been enacted by individual states, but there was an interstate commerce of ideas. Social workers and opinion-makers crossed state lines to attend conferences and journals containing their ideas about secrecy were distributed via the U.S. Post Office.

I do not recall the involvement of the Children's Bureau in the effort to promote state legislation about amended birth certificates. I should reread that wonderful book by E. Wayne Carp, cited below.

An apology has been extracted from the Australian government, which has states that were involved in two bad things. The first involved the transmigration of children from England to Australia. Picture this: a girl is put on a boat at an English port with other children who are told they are going to a great school in Australia. After a long voyage, they are taken to an empty piece of land and are told that they are going to build the school from scratch. Years later, the girl reaches the age of majority and leaves the system of public care, thinking that she is an orphan. She is not told that her mother is alive in England! I have cited two articles--by Benn and by Buti--below, which will provide further detail.

The second bad thing done in Australia was the forced removal of aborigine youths from their families so that they could be educated and absorbed into mainstream society. They are now called "The Stolen Generation."

Here are citations of one book and two articles. I am Reg Niles, the founder of the Adoption Bibliography Center.

CARP, E. Wayne (1946- ). Family Matters: Secrecy and Disclosure in the History of Adoption. Blurbs: "Cuts through the sealed records, changing policies, and conflicting agendas that have obscured the history of adoption in America . . ."--adv. "If one can overlook the author's lack of objectivity in his last three chapters, Family Matters is worth reading as an historical review of adoption records and practices in the United States."--Carol Baumann, Ph.D., LCSW.
patricia is looking for her biological Mother and Father

Contact Patricia Kotze pkotze@drminc.us

I was born in White Plains , NY at 9:28 a.m. on July 27, 1959 in a Catholic Hospital ; I believe my name at birth was Patricia Ellen Casey (obviously Irish); mother’s wishes were my name to remain Patricia and to be brought up Catholic.

Ellen was changed to Anne but the Patricia remained. Mother's name was probably Patricia Ellen or Ellen Casey and she was in her mid to late 20"s. The hospital that Patricia was born in might have been St. Mary's , St. Anne's or St. Agnes', the agency she was adopted from was County of Westchester Services . I was told my Mother was married to another man and that there were 2-children in the family, a brother and sister. I would suspect the children were less than 5 years of age.

Other than that I don’t know of any other info. Records are of course sealed
i am not related to patricia just giving her a helping hand by posting this message for her. betty

I am assisting my cousin, Mary Jo Neal Redding, in finding her oldest son. Mary Jo gave birth to a male child, birth name Tony Demonte Neal, in GA. As a young parent the child was taken from her in White Plains, NY. Tony was 1-2 years old when he was taken away. His birthday is in September and he should be about 38 or 39 years old. Tony's father's name is Edward Law (deceased). Tony has a younger brother, sister (on his mother's side of the family), and a host of other family members that would love to meet him. If he was adopted, his name may have been changed.
Tony, we will not stop looking for you.

Is anyone familiar with how to get access to records of adoptions that occurred in the 1870s in NYC? What court holds the records?....New York County Surrogate Court? How do you determine if someone was adopted in the 1870s if there was no adoption record?

My grandfather was adopted by his aunt shortly after his birth in 1874 because his birth parents died. Because adoption records today are sealed, does this mean that all historic adoption records are sealed?
Old Adoption and Birth Records

My grandfather was born in 1874 in New York City. His parents died shortly thereafter and he was adopted by his aunt between 1874 and 1880 in New York City. Section 830 of the New York State Laws of 1873 governed adoptions at that time. However, this law was mostly about making adoptions legal and setting forth a process for child adoptions. Privacy of records, including original birth records were not addressed by this law.

My grandfather, his birth parents, his adopted parents and his wife have been deceased for over 75 years now. Everyone tells me that ALL adoption records are sealed. However the laws that sealed adoption records were passed in the 1930s and 1950s. I doubt that these laws were made retroactive, especially for adoptions that were already finalized more than 50 years earlier.

Is anyone familiar with the law and the process for getting access to original birth and adoption records that happened in the late 1870s in NYC? A search by the NY Municipal Archives resulted in no birth record found.

P.S.
His birth name was James Costello and his adopted name was James Charles. However, as an adult he dropped his given name James because he always was called by his baptism name of Edward. His death record name was Edward Joseph Charles.
Joseph was his confirmation name.

Mike Barberi
Seeking information about a Bessie MESCHAM who was of an unknown age when she placed her small infant daughter Naomi Pearl in to the loving hands of Harry and Ellen/Ella JAMES in Wallace, Idaho in 1903 at the age of 25 days. The family were members of the congregation of Holy Trinity which also had a ministry which served southern Idaho at the time and for about 20 years.

Adopted mother came west in late 1902 gave last name as RATHJEN on marriage license in 1903. She was a nanny for the Rev. George Graves/Groves from the Holy Trinity Church and was baptized by Rev. Alward Champerlain from same parish, him being from Maryland. She is also not the natural mother of our mother as mtDNA proved it. HOwever, she was from Brooklyn so there may be some New York links. The surname MESCHAM can be spelled so many ways it is confusing.

Thank You for possible help in our quest.
Linda and Tom
I was born 05/03/1970 in Utica NY; my birthfather was 35 at the time of my birth. I know that he came from Cuba (where in Cuba is unclear) around 1955 when he was 20 years old. He married his first wife who was of Polish-German descent (she may have divorced him in the early 1970s) and had four children in 1970: one daughter age 12, and three sons, ages 11, 9, 5. He was living with my birthmother at the time of my birth and working as a golf pro. His mother and father were living in the US at the time; his mother was 70 and his father 52 in May of 1970.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

question 1910-1920 single woman

Would it have been possible for a single woman to adopt a child sometime between 1910 and 1920?

Lucy Bancroft, according to family records, never married nor did she give birth to this child. However, she either adopted him or gave him the name Bancroft. Possibly she had his name legally changed.

She told me his birth name was Frederick Voigt and that his parents, who were German immigrants, died in a murder suicide.

I have found a birth record in NY for an Anton Frederick Voigt born to Frederick Voigt and Freda Karsten the same date I have for the Bancroft child (23 Aug 1925). I also have found a death record for:
Voigt Freda 40 y Feb 1 1909 2603 Kings V230
Voigt Frederick 40 y Feb 1 1909 2602 Kings V230

It seems to me that my next step is to find if it was even possible for her to adopt. BUT, any suggestions would be wonderful.
Joan

Additional information can be found on page 258 of a book titled, "Adoption Agencies, Orphanages and Maternity Homes--An Historical Directory." Librarians have access to the WorldCat database, which contains the names of 147 libraries that possess a copy of the book, which was published in 1982.

Reg Niles
