On February 20th, 1963 in Portland, Oregon at the Albertina Nursery Home/Adoption Center she gave me the name Teresa Joy Tuttle and I was then given up for adoption. My original birth certificate says she was 17 at that time and was born in St. Paul, Minnesota. I look forward to meeting any family she has/had.

Sincerely

Adoptee in search of birth mother…male born 9/9/1981 at Portland Adventist Medical Center in Multnomah County, Portland, Oregon. Was adopted thru Adventist Adoption and Family Services. The only information I have on my birth mother is that she was 19yrs old when she had me, around 5ft tall and was in the 10th grade. Race: Caucasian, Nationality: European, Religion: Catholic, Special Interest: House Plants and Home Arts. Her father and mother were in their mid 40’s, her father was a truck driver and her mother was a Secretary. My information also states that her siblings were; Female age 20, Female age 19, Female age 18, Male age 17 and Female age 16…I don’t know if the female age 19 listed is her, her sister, or if she had a twin.
If anyone has any information that would help in my search of finding my birth mother/father or any family please contact me at bornsept9.1981@gmail.com.
1910-1911 Portland adoption

I came across a document yesterday written by Robert Athon Barnes that indicates that he adopted “Verna Aloise Barnes” born 6 May 1910 in Portland and that the records would be available at the Portland courthouse (this document was written in 1918). I know that Robert also married a woman named Effie R. Johnson in Oregon on on 4 Aug 1910. I’m unsure if there’s a biological relationship between Verna and Effie but either way I would really like to learn anything more about them. Can anyone help me out?

According to Richard (via a letter from his eighth or ninth wife, Audrey, there were two Phyllis Annes (in the Stage family it was not unusual for names to repeat; if a child died the name sometimes got recycled). And according to that letter, it was Patty who was killed by the milk truck. So I would be interested in seeing that newspaper article. Thanks.

I know a couple of things that I will discuss when I believe that I'm close to finding her. The lawyers office, I think, burned down so my mother never how else to get ahold of her. I don't know anything about trying to find adoption records so if someone could point me in the right directions it would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you.

I was adopted when I was 7 years old. I was born in Portland, Oregon to Pauline M. Thorsen and Micheal A. Wass. I have a brother named Danny Thorsen who is married and has a daughter. I have a sister named April Jo Thorsen who is married and has two sons and one daughter. I also have a brother named Gary Thorsenthat died when he was two and a half years old. As far as I know I am the baby. My brother Danny and my sister April Jo were adopted by my Aunt Barbra Fisher. My mom brought me to Arkansa when I was five. We crossed the border the day I turned 6 years old. I was taken from my mom the next day. I was adopted by Kenneth and Sarah Mobley. My adopted name is Cassandra Marieanne Mobley, but my birth name is Sandra Eve Thorsen. Please help me find my family. I love and miss them so very much. Thank You.
Wealth of Oregon names from 1810 - 1840s

From the OREGONIAN newspaper of December 10, 1888

In the Oregonian of November 22 was published the transcript of an early assessment roll, evidently made in 1842 or 1843. It was furnished by J. Henry Brown of this city, who receied it from some unknown source.

Dr. Wm. C. McKay of Pendleton, who was born in Astoria in 1821 recognized the names of many of which were grossly misspelled in the original document. He was intimately acquainted with nearly all whose names are mentioned and has furnished the following as a complete and correct list:

Wm. McCarty, "Elias Brandy Wine", came from California with Ewing Young in 1835,

Charles Campo, Rocky mountain trapper; St. Louis, Frenchman, 1840

Felix Hathaway, ship carpenter, came from the American coasting brig Owalhe, Capt. Domenas, 1832,

Daniel Girlman

Jeff Brown, a native of Massachusetts; California, 1830

George W. LeBriton, of Newburyport, Mass, came with Capt. John H. Couch in the ship Chenomas, 1812,

Charles Roe, of New York City, came here from California, 1840. He was hanged at Salem for the murder of his wife,

Andre Lonetain, Hudson Bay Company employee; Canada

John Baptiste l'alnoult, Hudson Bay Company; Canada, 1830. He opened a farm and raised the first fruit trees in Oregon, at the point now known as Davidson's Landing, Marion county.

Louis LaBronte, Sr., came from Canada with John Jacob Asstor's expedition, in the ship Tonquin, 1812. He helped to build Astoria.

Louis LaBronte Jr.; born Oregon, 1822.

Michell LaFramboise came with the Astor expedition and helped to build Astoria. He was appointed to the rank of postmaster in the service of the Hudson Bay Company, as leader of the expedition, and became the only real Chinook interpreter.

Johnson (negro). I have no recollection of him.

The Catholic church farm had several Canadian employees.

Francois Rivet came across the country with Lewis and Clark and settled with the Fintheads a Jacco prairie. He became a noted and useful man and by marriage with the chief's daughter, exerted great influence over the tribe and was for a long time trader for the Northwest and Hudson Bay companies.

Antoine Rivet, son of Francois Rivet, was born at Jacco prairie. He was a captain of Company K, in the Yakamah war and rendered good service.

Joseph Rivet, born at Colbitt, W.T.

John B. Duboy came across the plains with Wilson P. Hunt and Donald McKenzie. He was one of the three men left on Snake river to perish; two reached the Columbia river.Sidney Smith, a Canadian, came from Peoria, Ill, in 1830, and was one of the first immigrants to arrive that year.

Ewing Young, a Kentuckian, came from California with a band of horses in 1835.

Sumner; I did not know him.

Benjamin Williams, a native of Ireland, came with Young in 1835.

Pierre Servant, H.B.Co. employee; Canada.
Joseph Frederick de Des l'aur; same
Joseph Rock Bruin; same
Quaintal and bolsvair; same

Andre Chalefoux; a noted guide to the Hudson Bay Co. He made a yearly trip across the Rocky mountains and back.

Adolph Chamberlain, H.B. Co.; Canada. He came to Oregon in 1842 with Dr. White, Medorem Crawford, F.X. Matthieu and others.

J.B. Pichette, a noted Rocky mountain trapper; Canada.

Francois Lavieur, H.B.Co; Canada
Joseph Pain; same
Tossain Poirrier; same
Joseph Covnayer; same

Pierre Stanislaus, with Ewing Young from California; French.

O. DuBar, ---
Chas. Laundray, H.B. Co.; Canada
Eusta Rochon; same
Andre Lachapelle; same. Hubbard, born at Hoboken N.J., and came with Capt. N. Wyeth in 1831. He was one of the party who first brought cattle from California

John Hofstator, immigrant; 1842
Pierr Coutier, immigrant; Canada
Baptiste Bronsain
Baptist Duchares, a Rocky mountain trapper; St. Louis
Gedion Senecal, same

Joseph Gale, was a native of Virginia and was a Rocky mountain trapper. He came from California with Ewing Young, and was one of the men who built the first vessel in Oregon. It was a schooner called the Oregon and was launched at Portland. Gale commanded the vessel on a trip to California. Gale was one of the provisional triumvirate governors of Oregon.

John Quannan, a trapper, came with Young.

George Gay, an English adventurer, came from California. He and Dr. Bailey, John Howard and others had trouble with the Rogue River Indians, and two of the whites were killed. He became quite noted and amassed a fortune in cattle and horses.

John Turner was a trapper and came to Oregon with Jedediah Smith, an American fur trader. The party was attacked by the Umpqua Indians, on Umpqua river, below Winchester, and all were killed except Smith, Turner and Black, who made their way to Fort Vancouver separately. Turner went with McLeod & McKay's trapping expedition to California and afterward lived in Oregon as a trapper.

J. Vandercott
Pierre Depeau, Hudson Bay Colk Canada
Nicholas Montour, same
Francois Gaunye, same
Peree Minard, same
Charles Rondo, same
Pierre Larocque, same
Jain Gangrais, same

Thomas Molson, a Canadian, came for St. Louis

Pierre J. The McLeod & McKay party lost all their horses in a snowstorm on McLeod river, east of Chasty mountain.

P. Lapratt, Hudson Bay Company, Canada

Joseph Gervais, Sr., crossed the plains with Hunt and McKenzie in 1812, and was connected with John Jacob Astor's company. The town of Gervais was named after hi.
Joseph Gervais, Jr., born in Oregon.

John B. Topain was a noted interpreter at Walla Walla long ago. He married the celebrated Madame Dorion, whose husband Pierre, while crossing the plains with the Hunt and McKenzie party, was killed by Snake Indians near where Huntingdon now stands. Mrs. Dorion and her two children excaped to the Columbia river.

John Baptiste Cobain is the only person on this list now (1888) living. He must have reached Vancouver about 1832, as I recollect his arrival with others on the yearly Hudson Bay express from Canada.

My Aunt Nina Bell Melton was married to David Otis Cottenware and had 7 children, one died shortly after birth. The remaining 6 were taken into foster care in the late 1950's early 1960's here in Cowlitz County.

The second oldest son Daniel Cottenware - Knight has asked if I could locate his lost siblings and I myself would like to find them as well.

Linda May [Mae] was born 02 Feb 1951,
Sandra was born 21 Oct 1953 and
Arthur was born 16 Oct 1954.

We have found James and Alvin or rather they have found us. If the children are unaware, they are part Indian and French Canadian.

They were all either adopted out of the Longview/Kelso area here in Cowlitz County, Washington or a couple of them might have been adopted through Portland, Oregon.

Arthur Sandra are believed to have been adopted by a family who worked as Missionaries and are rumored to have lived in or around Boring, Oregon.

Daniel and Linda were in a foster home without the younger siblings at one point and Daniel was adopted by the Knight family. They did not adopt Linda because they had a son at home and didn't feel it was the right setting to bring a female into their home, with two boys.

Dan misses his siblings dearly and is hoping we may be able to find them.

I include the surnames of Daniel Cottenware's adopted family Knight and Nina Bell Melton's mother's maiden name was Huls

I have poked around the Internet in an effort to help you and this is my report.

On Aug. 31, 2001, an anonymous person joined a large date-of-birth registry run by Adoption.com. His registration has a variant spelling of Evelyn’s surname: TALLMAN.

Rootsweb’s version of the Social Security Death Index has two tools that may be of interest to you. For any decedent’s entry on the SSDI you or anyone can post a free annotation, by clicking on “Add Post-em”. The annotation can be a plea for contact with relatives, and should contain a permanent address and/or phone number.

The other tool is the SS-5 letter, which is an application for a copy of the form the decedent filled-out when applying for a social security card. The form should contain the applicant’s father’s name and the mother’s maiden name, etc.

The SSDI has three entries of interest:

Leland O. HOWE, born Nov. 25, 1922, card issued in Colorado, last known residence in Tillamook, OR, died Nov. 1987. The SSDI never gives place of death. Anyone wishing to apply for the death certificate must guess at the state in which death occurred.

Evelyn TALLMAN, born May 15, 1936, issued in NY, residence in Brandon, VT.

Evelyn M. HOWE, born Apr. 17, 1936, issued in VT, residence in Westfield, MA.

The decedents who resided in Westfield and Tillamook are listed as if living: this is at the website known as Veromi.net. Leland’s entry has his age as 87 and lists no relatives.

Ancestry.com has a message board for the surname HOWE. It has 6 hits for Leland. On May 3, 2000 “Linderoest” posted a query in which she says that Leland married Evelyn YOUNG in the early 1950s.

Further research would involve birth and death and marriage certificates, death notices in newspapers, funeral directors, and cemeteries. Sometimes there is a will on file at the courthouse.

Good luck in your research.

Reg Niles
RegNMINiles#cs.com
(change pound sign to at sign)

I am searching for my father's birth mother, Evelyn Minnie Tallmon. She was born around 1936 in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon. She had a child in 1953 or 54, my dad, David Lee with his father, Leland Orval Howe. They gave him up for adoption 3 days after his birth. I know nothing about her only what was on the birth certificate, Leland passed away in 1987, I don't think they were married. Please if anyone has any information about her, or any leads to her, please email me @ cheriepb@aol.com

I would greatly appreciate it, thank you.

I have a friend who was adopted as a baby. He is twelve now. His mother died at his birth and his father, not able to care for him, put him up for adoption. My friend loves his adopted parents, but wants to find his birth father. Does anyone have any suggestions on how he should approach this? Alex has no idea where his father is right now. He asked me to look for him since I have this account. :D

All my friend, Alex, knows is that his mother's name was Bobbie.
His father's name was Roger Appel.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

My grandfather Thomas Turner was born July 21, 1926 in Eugene, Oregon. His parents were George H and Musette (Baker) Turner. However, George and Musette were actually his adoptive parents. Little is know about the adoption or the situation surrounding it. The story is that the baby Thomas was left on the doorstep of George and Musette. It was known in their social circle that they wanted, but couldn't have children. The family theory is that a young girl from a prominent family may have been pregnant and this is how the family decided to help the girl and the Turner family.

Any help, suggestions or ideas you might have to help me find my grandfather's birthparents would be great.

Thank you

Hi, have you heard about the voluntary adoption registry that Oregon Dept. of Human Services has? See their web page http://arcweb.sos.state.or.us/adoption.html . Successful Searching!

I don't know if this will help or not, but I found two newspaper articles about Edna May Ceresetti.

The first one is about a son she and Joe Ceresetti had on December 28, 1928. This appeared in the Oakland Tribune.
(In looking at the California birth index, it appears he was born in 1927).

The other is about child support between Edna and Joe. It does mention the three children. This article was in the Modesto News, July 31, 1931.

Sandy

Yep. I know. I have been searching for these people since before my mother died. She so wanted to know if she had family out there somewhere. As far as Jack is concerned, I have it on good authority that since he was born in Italy, his name was "most likely" Giacomo and that Jack is an abbreviation of that name. I have used soundex, and metaphone, but I usually just end up with ten thousand Christian and Christiensens. I did find an Edna Ceresetti with 3 children, no father, no husband. I would love to find the their marriage date. Maybe he's a gypsy?
And I have searched EVERYWHERE for Louise Fail (Faille, Fahl, Fall, Falle, Feil.. etc.) And then usually I find them on the 1930 census somewhere besides Oregon, (or married or dead) and yes, I did find the one in Oregon in 1930, that was my first find after I got the pre-adoption birth record. And that brings up another question... Since my mother was born in Dec 1929, why would Louise still be in the Crittendon home 6 months later? Weird.

Hi, have you seen the Adoption Records in the Oregon State Archives web site? http://arcweb.sos.state.or.us/adoption.html

There is info on the web site about how to obtain adoption information.
