My friend Randy was born March 5, 1956 at the Methodist Hospital, Shelby County, Tennessee. He lived with his parents Janet Lynn Jones and Lyle Jones before the adoption. He was adopted in 1960 by Baxter and Virginia Brown. He started elementary school about 1961/1962. His adopted name is Randy Brown.
He has no paperwork from the adoption. The Adoption Records
from years 1951-1959 were suppose to be accessible, but they stated his was permanently sealed.

He was four when he was adopted. They told him he was part of an adoption scam. His biological parents names are Janet Lynn Jones and Lyle Jones from Memphis, TN. Lyle Jones robbed a bank in Arkansas around the 1950s. He was from Memphis,Tennessee area.

He was adopted by Baxter and Virginia Brown. He saw the original birth certificate and it said he was born May 5, 1952, Methodist Hospital, Memphis, TN. The birth certificate he was issued states he was born March 5, 1956.
He has attempted to obtain the records. He wants to know who his family is and meet his siblings.
If anyone can help me REUNITE HIM with his BIOLOGICAL FAMILY, I would be ETERNALLY GRATEFUL!!!

Malisa

Protestant Orphanage Nashville TN 1910 census

This is information for you. My Great Aunt was in the Protestant Orphanage in 1910 for around 10 years. Just so you know, she would say kids were 'adopted out' from there. Some were officially adopted, and some were not. They were just cared for as if foster care and my aunt used the words adopted out meaning foster care. The 1910 Federal Census in Tennessee, Davidson County T624 Roll 1496 Page 171 has a listing of the children and staff at the 'assylum' . There is only one page of children. The Ramsey's are my line on the sheet. Hope this helps anyone.

Hello, I have been searching for my neice that was born in Tennessee. She was taken away and we do not even know if a name was given on her birth certificate. Her name given at birth by her birth mother was "Jody" Overby. Her mother is Marcia Brewer and her father Joseph Overby. Both were teens themselves and decided they could not raise a child by themselves. Marcia was at Florence Crittenton home until the baby was born. The baby was born at University Hospital in Knoxville TN.
I have been searching for years and this child seemed to have fallen off the face of the earth. There seems to be no record of her anywhere. FCH is of no help whatsoever.
I just know, if she is anything like the rest of our family, she will want to know her real family. I do not in any way want to take away from the family she has now. Her sisters and brother would really like to know her.

I keep seeing "Have you ordered your records?" and the "law" that says you can get the records. I have tried 2x to get records, the first time a clerk called me, slipped up and mentioned 2 other children in the file, when she sounded nervous I named them and who adopted them, she said she would send me the papers needed to get the record on my mother. I got the papers alright, stating they could not find the records and I could pay a 400.00 fee to have them search, but they could not guarantee they could find them AND the money was nonrefundable. PLUS there was another fee over 200.00 if they did find them to get them! Can someone tell me what to do about this instead of posting over and over the "law" and "Have you gotten your records yet?" The other 2 children from the same mother have gotten their's, why can't I get my mothers???? Her name was Brenda Jackson, birth mother Myrtle Jackson, Myrtle died in 1946, my mother was 3 and adopted by Myrtle's sister Ruth Ward.

I am looking for my brother that was adopted between the years of 1952-1955. He was born in Tennessee, my Mother lived in Smyrna at the time. Not sure if he would have been born there or a bigger city close by. And maybe the same with the adoption. I have worked with the adoption agency in Tennessee, and their fees are pretty steep. Hoping to find another way to find him. Can anyone help?
Thank you,
Linda Abston Tucker

looking for sister, never met her

I know this is a genealogy board, but finding a sister I never met would be part of my genealogy?

My father, Robert Lee Sims, married Josephine Westmoreland in Chattanooga TN about 1948 - 1950 +/- (date unsure). A daughter was born of this marriage, Bobby Jo Sims. Bobby Jo was born about 1949 +/- or so (again dates unsure)

My father then served in the Korean War and when he returned, his wife, Josephine wanted a divorce and to remarry (so the story I have goes). Josephine remarried and to my knowledge, Bobby Jo, my sister, never knew my father, Robert Sims was her father.

My father, Robert Lee Sims was born 1931 and I think Josephine Westmoreland was the same age, so she was also born around 1931.

If anyone has any information on Josephine or Bobby Jo, please pass along my email address: kcwebchic@yahoo.com.

I would really like to meet my sister as I do not have any other siblings.

Carolyn was adopted by Lillard and Lucy Beard (Lillard was probably her birth father) in Knoxville TN in the mid-40s.

Carolyn is my mother and is terminally ill. I believe St. Peter's is the name of the orphanage. He was named Anthony Gerard Mattingly (by his mother or the nuns?). He was adopted at six weeks of age by Mike and June Martin of Southaven, MS. His name was changed to Michael Kevin Martin. Suzanne was a nurse at the base and the father is believed to be a doctor on the base.
I am seeking info. from anyone who had a child on Nov. 27, 1980----Dec 2,1980. I had twins at the Womens Hospital in Memphis. I came home with one child, the daughter. The son was taken and I was told everthing from he was still born to he never existed. My family saw both babies and I was awake and saw them. Are there similar cases out there? I was billed for boy Dec. 1, 1980 and girl Dec.2, 1980 from a private Dr. that I never knew.
Long story here but I will share if you want to write with a similar story or if you were a boy adopted in Memphis at this time,
Thanks, Pat
naindianspirit@aol.com

JA MANESS ADOPTED MARTHA COLE

Hi List,
I am researching the adoption of my grandmother Martha Cole. She was adopted by James Alex Manners (Manis, Maness) of Sneedville Tennessee. Mary E Seal stated this in a document from 1939. Mary E Seal and JA Manners (Manis, Maness) were brother and sister. Mary stated that her brother (JA Manners) and his wife Cordia Seal adopted Martha Cole from some institution in Knoxville Tennessee. Which institution she (Mrs Seal) didn't know. Martha Cole was listed in the Harrison Funeral Home burial records with a birthdate of September 9, 1909. I have not been able to find her birth certificate. Martha passed away January 5 1939. On her death certificate it did not list a birthdate. Martha married Fred Lambert of Sneedville Tennessee. Is anyone researching any of these families?? Please email me with any information and as always Thank you in advance.

KNOX COUNTY ORPHANAGES 1916

Hi List,
I am hoping I can get some help. I am trying to research my grandmother's adoption from approxmately 1916. I believe she was adopted out of Knox County Tennessee. My grandmother Martha Cole was born Sept 10, 1909 and I am unable to locate her birth certificate which could tell me alot. Does anyone have a list of orphanages from this time frame? I know of 1 orphanage in Knox County by the name of St John's Orphanage. There was an orphan listed in the 1920 census with a similar name as my grandmother. Does anyone know if this orphanage is still around today? I would appreciate any help. Thank You in advance...
Lokking For info on female adopted by Allen Harrison Hobbs and Mary Climmons Hobbs in 1940 in Alabama.

My grandmother was adopted in 1940 by Allen Harrison Hobbs and Mary Climmons Hobbs both of Birmingham , AL
(West End). Allen and Mary both originally from Lebnon , TN.
Edna Marie was born October 10, 1932 in Jefferson County , AL. We are in the process of getting info on how to get the sealed documents released. Adoption took place in Montgomery , AL. I believe from the stories we were told by her that she became a ward of the state. I do know for sure that she does have sibilings from her birth mother. My grandmother when she was a teenager found her half sister and they started writing back and forth to each other and then it suddenly stopped for reasons unknown. She also remembers going to see them when she was little after being adopted, remembers playing with them. I am under the assumption that Mary and Allen knew the birth parents. Mary and Allen had a business in Birmingham called Alabama Woodworks Co. which is still active til this day, but I believe it has been renamed. If anyone has any information that might help us , please reply to this or send me an email. Or if anyone knows of anything else we can do to get information. Thank You.

Birth Mother Deceased/Adoptee Born Tennessee/Need Advised How To Obtain Non-Identifiable Information/NEED A TN ANGEL

I am the sister to a deceased birthmother. The male child was born at Lookout, Hamilton, Tennessee December 1969. I know the child was given the last name of Russell. The birth mother was placed in a Home for Unwed Mothers, a minor, and child was placed for adoption. I do not know the adoptee name or the adoptee adopted parents, neither did the birth mother. Nor do I know the Agency, if any. I do know the birth mothers date and place of birth and all other identifiable information on her. Is it possiable to obtain non-identifiable information for this adoptee? If so, what are the proceedings?
