May or Mary Davis adopted from Charleston WV, Davis Child Shelter

The family of Richard Davis is searching for his sister May (Mae) or Mary E. Davis or her children. Both Richard and May or Mary E. were born to Nora Sirbaugh and Willie (William) N. Davis in Berkeley Co. WV and adopted from the Davis Child Shelter in the early 1940's. Richard's only child would love to know any cousins she might have.

The 1940 census shows Richard in Kanawha County (in Davis Child Shelter at the time), and his sister's name is shown as Mary E. Davis not May as we believed.

We are still hoping to make a connection between the children of Richard and Mary Davis.

Kerry,
The first thing I want you to do is to tell your dad how much my mother loved him. I don't know if your dad's childhood was difficult, but my mother's was awful. He was the one bright spot in her life. She tried to locate him through a sympathetic priest at our Episcopal church and don't think she was successful. I would love to speak to you by phone and correspond with your dad if he is interested. I have pictures of him, Robert Holton II, D. Leone Bull and my mother. I so long to know more of what my mother was like as a child and the brother she cherished. How old is your dad? I'd like to share some memories, but would never want to upset him. I think they favored "Bobby" as my mom called him over her.
Love, Jane Scurto Manarik

I am looking for info on Edith and Robert Wyrick's birth parents. I believe the adoption to have taken place in Mercer Co altho I am not sure. Edith Wyrick was adopted by Garland and Bertha Goode and her brother Robert was adopted by a family with the surname Cowan. Edith Wyrick Goode married Bobby Irvin Walters. Any info would be appreciated.

My husband was born in & adopted in OK in 1935 and was always told by his parents from day-one that he & his sister (different parents) were adopted. He had a lawyer in OK petition the judge to open his records and was granted. The only item in the file was his original birth certificate. He had all the other information from his parents. Don't know what the laws are in WV, but worth checking into. Also, he said his Mother always told him when the other kids "made fun of him" because he was adopted, to tell them "My Parents CHOSE me and your parents had to take what they got". I thought that was a good thing to say. Hope you find what you are looking for.

i guess you are right and i completely understand! lol.i think i just got really excited when i saw this. this is so weird. my brother started looking into this a couple of weeks ago for fun and we used the name we had on mom's birth certificate and all of your info popped up. well when my grandmother marie crum adopted my mom in august of 1959 in logan wv. she ran a beauty shop in downtown logan, my grandfather's name was irvin crum and he drove a betsy ross truck. she couldn't have any children and to make a long story short adopted my mother. her birthdate is august 2, 1959 but i think the paper signed by katheryn delores patrick might be dated around august 9th through the court system that we have and she had to be older than 21 to sign according to the document. it is the only documentation we ever found. my grandmother was very quiet about it with my mom and so was her family. we think her real father's name was whitey warren maybe??? the pics you posted look a lot like my mom. little sister and brother. i could take a pic of the document my mom has somehow i suppose for you to compare since there is an actual signature on there. we were always just curious if she had any brothers or sisters and curious about medical history since we know nothing. we can just post on here if it is more comfortable for you. thanks for responding :) i am curious to know how you know or are related to her.

Kerry,
This is Jane, Meredythe's daughter. I am planning a trip to Palm Springs in October to visit my father's cousin and was wondering whether you or your dad would be amenable to meeting with me. I will be happy to drive to where you are an will go back to Palm Springs the same night. Any thoughts? Please help me put my mom's past together. Her mother (Leone) was not a warm person and it would be nice to be able to know about her youth and how she grew into the strong and loving woman she did. Please respond if you can.
Jane Scurto Manarik 847-546-5654 janie921@hotmail.com

Kerry,
Here is a question my family would like to pose to your dad. Does he know who my mother's birth father was? My mother was left by D. Leone Bull in the care of a foster home near where my great grandma Hettie Kinne worked as a cook for a wealthy family. When my mom was 4, Leone and Robert came and took her to West Virginia. My mom was born in 1925 in upstate NY. I don't know how it happened, but Leone was committed by Robert Holton Bull II in Elgin IL and then divorced her. He took your dad with him. My mother who had moved back to upstate NY to go to college and live with her grandmother (Hettie), came to Chicago, had to establish residency for 6 months and then signed her mother out of the institution. She met and married my Dad in Chicago. They had 3 kids, my sister Maureen, brother Pete and me. We are all very close. Leone never remarried. She was quite an independent woman for her time. She bought a house in Fox Lake IL and worked as a medical records librarian for St. Francis Hospital in Evanston IL. She was difficult even later in life, but she too had a horrible childhood as she was born out of wedlock. I guess that makes us cousins. Keep in touch. There's more to tell and more that I'd like to hear.

Hi Jane,
Yes, that's my Dad, Robert Holton Bull III. His Dad (Robert Holton Bull II) was married to Leone. Meredythe was Leone's daughter. They adopted my Dad. My Dad says he remembers your Mom. That's so neat! I believe the marriage didn't work out between Leone and RHB II and they left. I'm kind of fuzzy on the details but my Dad knows. RHB II remarried to Ruth whom I know as Grandma Bull. She passed away in the early 70's. My Dad is alive and well living in Borrego Springs, CA. It's a small desert town in S. Calfornia. Me and my sister live in Orange County, CA. I live in Laguna Niguel, CA with my husband, my twin sister lives in Costa Mesa, CA with her husband and two kids and my brother lives in Tokyo, Japan. Our mother passed away from cancer when we were kids. My Dad never remarried. He's a very sweet man and will have his 80th birthday in a couple weeks.

I've never known very much about my Dad's family so it's all very interesting.

Kerry

Kerry,
If this is the person I am related to we may have quite a history to tell. I have several e-mail exchanges that happened several years ago between me and Susan Neff, Historian of Dr. James Ford Historic Home, Wabash, Indiana

Hello Jane,

I am Susan Neff, Historian at the Dr. James Ford Historic Home in Wabash, Indiana. I saw your 2002 and 2004 postings on Ancestry message boards about your mother and grandmother.

Your grandmother, Dorothy Leone Kinne, married Robert Holton Bull, a gr-grandson of Dr. James and America Ford. They lived in Charleston WV and according to the 1930 census, their daughter Meredythe was born in 1926 in New York and was listed as "adopted." According to your message board postings, Robert must have married your grandmother near the time your mother was born. Do you have any idea of how Robert and Dorothy Leone could have met?

I have been able to determine that your grandfather graduated Butler University in Indianapolis and later worked as an editor for the Charleston WV Daily Mail - he also wrote an Arts column there. Your grandmother was active in Charleston society at that time (played Bridge and gardening). He later was an editor at the South Bend IN Tribune, and was managing editor for the Hammond IN Times and the Wichita KS Eagle newspapers; he also had a short career with the National Dairy Council in Chicago. Sometime around 1950 he attended Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Evanston IL and had begun a new career as an Episcopalian minister in Kansas City KS when he died in 1956 at age 54 of lung cancer - I have his obit, but it does not list your mother, Meredythe, as a survivor - it lists his wife's name as "Ruth" and a son Robert Holton Bull III. Had your grandparents possibly divorced and Robert remarried?

So I have a mystery as to who Mrs. "Ruth" Bull was, and what happened to Dorothy Leone and Meredythe Bull. I also am most interested to trace Robert Holton Bull III - is he a natural son of your grandmother and therefore your uncle? Can you help me?

Susan Neff, Historian
The Dr. James Ford Historic Home
177 West Hill Street, Wabash IN 46992
(260) 563-8686
www.jamesfordmuseum.org

It is my hope that the Robert Bull you are referring to was my mother's Meredythe Lee Bull's adopted brother Bobby. I don't know if he is the II or III). I am not sure if my mother was ever formally adopted by him. Anyway, she adored her brother. Let's where this leads. We might be able to help each other.
Jane

Wow! Thank you! My Dad told me he wasn't officially adopted until he was about 2 years old. I believe his father was a foster parent at first. He was born in 1931 and probably adopted in 1933 in Charleston, WV. My Dad's name is Robert Holton Bull and his father's is the same. Like I said though his original name was Harold Eugene Russell.

I'm sure his mother has passed away by now but it would be interesting to find out who she was and if my Dad has any brothers or sisters out there.

thank you
