Can Anyone Tell Me About My Korean Name?

I was adopted in South Korea in 1970. I do not have a birth certificate. The name on all my paperwork is Nam, Choon Nam. Is this the American equivalent to Jane Doe? And why is there a comma? Is Nam my last name and Choon Nam my first name?

Also, I have a document -- A Certificate for Ophanhood -- that is dated just a month before I was adopted. But I was told I was put in an orphanage as a baby. Is this paperwork just a formality? I appreciate anything you can give me on these issues.

June Marie Aldrich b. 1944 NH, MA or NY, adopted by NYC family

June Marie Aldrich was born on June 21, 1944 at the Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New Hampshire to Lillian Louise (Ethier) Aldrich. Lillian said that she gave the child up for adoption to a family in New York City.A request was sent to the state of NH for a birth certificate for June Marie but they replied saying that no such records existed (they searched from 1937-1947). Is it possible that if a child were adopted into another state, that the birth records from the birth state would be transferred into the other state? If anyone has any ideas for where else I could search, or has heard of Lillian Louise or June Marie, please let me know!

Where do I start?

My husbands mother gave up a child for adoption when she was a teenager, but we don't know when or where it took place. As far as we know, there was only one aunt who knew about it and she is deceased, so is his mother. All we were told was that she had a baby and gave it up for adoption when she was a teen and that she left home to have it. Anyone with ideas on where to start, I would really appreciate it! Thank you!

Birth Mothers name: Ruth Lavina Fleming
DOB: Oct. 3, 1932
born and raised in Arkansas .. later moved to Michigan for the remainder of her life and died June 1982.

Where should I start looking???? I have posted at this site with her name and info but no luck yet.

While entering an adopted child in a genealogy program what is the proper way?
If a child was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Doe, I'll call him Bob Doe. Now say Mrs. John Doe divorces John and marries Tom Smith and takes Bob Doe with her. Now Tom Smith adopts Bob Doe. How would I enter Bob's full name in my program?
Would it be Bob DOE Smith or Bob Smith with no reference to the name Doe?
Thanks for your help on this probably simple question.

Families - ROSK,EVANS,GLUTH & TRACHEL

I am searching for my birthmother. Born in the summer of 1925 in a Mid-Western state. Of Irish & Cherokee Indian decent. Her name was EDNA. The Evans name was in the family.

The following info was found on the 1930 census. I believe EDNA TRACHEL is my birthmother.

Edward Rosk-husband, Goldie (Evans - maiden name) wife.
4 GLUTH children, Robert,Melba,Alfred and Goldie A.
EDNA TRACHEL is shown as a stepdaughter. The census shows they lived in Fairview Park, Cuyahoga, OH.

In my Non-ID Info it states that Edna's mother was married before and that she had 2 older 1/2 brothers and 2 older 1/2 sisters. The above matches this info. Also the EVANS name is there. My adoptive mother said the Evans name was in the family.

My birth mother was discribed as having dark wavy/curly hair, hazel eyes with very long eyelashes and a very good posture. Edna only had a 7th grad education. She liked to read and sew but did not care for sports very much.

She live in Miami, FL form 1942 to 1947. She worked as a bar maid, waitress, housekeeper, babysitter and elevator operator. I was born in Miami, FL in Nov of 1945. I was supposed to be name after her best girlfriend, Glory Jean. Vital Satistics made a mistake and recorded my name as Gloria Jean Ebanks. Noland Ebanks was my birthfather ( I have all the info on him).

It states in the Non-ID info that EDNA got married (not my birthdad) shortly after she gave me up for adoption. After the adoption was final in 1947, she return to her home state.

Does anyone have any info about these families? if so, please advise. Thanks!

Still Searching.

Searching for long lost great uncle

My great grandmother Alice McCann gave up a son for adoption between 1904-1910. It haunted her until her death. I'm not sure if I'd have the right to search through any adoption records? The only way i can think of to narrow down the birth records is to make a list of all McCanns registered between those years and then compare them with the 1911 census when its released. That way i may atleast be able to find the birth certificate? Any ideas, thoughts or tips?

My grandmother was found abandoned at appx 2 years old. She was told that she was 50% Native American by her adoptive parents. She was givena new name, dob, etc. Her new DOB could also be the day she was found. I heard it was on some reservation, maybe Colorado? I can't seem to find ANY information on her adoption or new parents. I want to find any records about grandma's case and I want to try to prove her Native American Blood. Can anyone give me info on grandma or what to do next? Here's her info: Ruth Florence Whoeler, new dob: June 21,1912 or 1915 d.3/27/97 CO. Adoptive parents: John and May Whoeler (Christian Science) (John later married Roberta) Grandma married Howard Horace. Bliss and later John W. Green. BIA, Choctaw Nation, etc. Looked everywhere! Thanks! Nancy

Fred and Ann had eventually abandoned all five children in different places.

The First child Carol born about 1958 was left somewhere between Chicago and Seattle about 1964

The next three were left at a grocery store in Seattle around 1967
they were

Jim who was born around 1960
Kathy born in 1962 Chicago
Cindy born 1964 Chicago

The last child was abandoned in a hospital in New Mexico around 1972

He was Danny born around 1966.

My friend was Middle child, she was eventually adopted and her records sealed.
She was around 5 when she was abandoned and remebers verry little of her parents. The only thing she knows is her immunization records for school said she was born in Chicago and apparently born at home.

Any info would be helpful

How should adoptees refer to adoptive ancestors?

I'm an adult adoptee whose late adoptive mother was closely related to a number of prominent people in U.S. history including two presidents and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. For me, my adoptive parents will always be my "real" parents, just as my younger brother (their biological child) is my real brother, and my grandparents were my real grandparents. (I did a successful search years ago, birthparents were dead, but
I had a wonderful relationship w/ my bio. uncle for years
until his death.)
It gets murky when referring to people in my adoptive family's prior generations whom I never met -- thus instead of referring to "my great-grandmother," I tend to say "My mother's grandmother." This may stem from a lack of feeling of entitlement, but has become more confusing than that. It has come up more recently because my young grandson learned of these famous family connections and excitedly says things like,
"So I'm related to____?!" -naming one of the presidents in my adoptive family.
(He knows I was adopted but does not make a connection.)
I'm just not sure what the proper response is. Do I tell him yes, you are? Or do I say "Technically, no, you're not, not by blood or genes"-? I have no idea how most adoptees feel about this issue, how they refer to adoptive-family ancestors, or how it's handled in traditional geneaological charts.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

adopted off the reservation

I was adopted off the reservation when my father died in 1960 along with my younger sister and younger brother. I am trying to find any background history on my biological family and maybe even some relatives. I know I have an older sister who stayed with our mother and grandmother on the reservation. I don't remember any of their names except my mother's first name which is barbara. My father's name was daniel gonzalez, my brothers name was daniel gonzalez jr., my younger sister's name was francis, and mine was estrella (stella) gonzalez. If anyone has any information on how I can go about finding information on my biological family or any information on my biological family it would be greatly appreciated.

My question is sort of different, My grandfather died 18 years ago. I had no information on his parents. I sent for his social security app. When I recieved it I got his parents names and the city in MASS that he was born in. I still could't find any other records for them. I went to the city clerks office and they would not give me his Birth certificate, they tool my phone # and said they had to research something. I'm thinking he was adopted is it legal for them to give me the birth certificate? What are the laws pertaining to this? All partys involved are dead they have been for years. Does anyone have any idea what I should do next?

I am looking for any info that I can find on my father's birth families. He was born 12/30 in Latrobe PA , I don't know if his mom (last name Muhl)was in a home for unwed mothers or not. All we have are the last names of his parents. He was in foster care and orphan homes until he was 10 and ended up in IL. Don't know if that makes finding his records in PA any easier since he wasn't legally adopted until years later in IL.I know absolutley zero on this type of search.

ok, you ready.... My great grandfather Bryant Dodd ?1892?-1966 said he was born on a blackfeet reservation around North Dakota or Montana and when he was very young his parents died (1830's to 1890's very hard times for the blackfeet with to many deaths to count) he was shiped off to Arkansas with his 2 (3) siblings. the earlest doc. i can find for him is the 1900 census in Liberty, Independence, Ar with the Evans family (who list the childern as nices and nephews) Augustus and Mary S Evans and their children Martha, Jennie and Claud. of the 4 Dodd children only Bryant, Charley and Alice were living with the Evans, while Julia doesnt show up until 1920 when she was widowed and went to live with Bryant now known as Julia Grant. now as if this wasnt hard enough when Bryant signs up for WWI and WWII he lists himself as white and being born in AR. on his Cal death index 1940-1997 it says his mothers maiden name is Johnson. sadly he was to young to remeber anything more then what i have listed here and died before my father was 5yo so i am only going on hear-say. if anyone could tell me what site or # i could call to learn more that would be great, or if your related to anyone mentioned here that would be even better. but if you would just like a challenge and would like to do it out of the kindness of your heart i would be most greatful. thanks for lisening to my shpeal.

Looking for court records from the 1850s

Hi,

My great-grandfather, Newton Jasper Collums, and his brother were adopted around 1853. Their parents died of an illness after having moved to the area very recently so there is no record of them on the 1850 Census in that location. My great-grandfather tried too late to find information out about them, and at this point there is no one alive who knows my great-uncle's name.

I was hoping I might be able to find a court record of the adoption so I could discover my great-uncle's name and search for my biological great-great-grandparents that way. Does anyone have any suggestions where I might look for a court or adoption record? I know my adopted g.g. grandfather's name.

Thanks!

I have just begun attempting my family's genealogy. Last night, while trying to get as many names as my parents could remember, we arrived on an immediate problem. One of my grandfathers was adopted. My dad remembers two possible locations (NC & VA)...but my grandfather was left on a doorstep. This immediately brings to mind the following:

1) No records???

2) Do you folks track the adoptive family as well? Do you only use bloodline? Both?

My Nan had a baby, Julia on 9th Sept 1925. She had to "Give her away?" as Nan was an "unmarried" servant. Julia was not adopted but "Long Term Fostered somewhere..." She died in York 2000 I traced her death certificate and got a copy.. this gives her maiden name as Alton.. My nan was Jennie Matthews when she had her, so no idea where Alton comes in? Auntie Julia was married and her married name was Carr, I have searched ALL the Carr/Alton marriage's and all the Carr/Matthews... from when she would of been 16 right up till around the time she would of been 40... no trace of a marriage. Please can anyone tell me. because Nan had to give up her daughter would her birth not be in the "Public view" for 9th Sept 1925. Would it be kept private like mine is because I am adopted? ANY HELP GREATLY APPRECIATED, I HAVE SPENT 5 MONTHS TRYING TO GET INFORMATION. THANK YOU SO MUCH.... Julie x

I was born in May 1958, in Jacksonville,FL. I was given up for adoption at that time. The only info I have is my mother's name was Margaret J Brewer (born 11/23/1933), had a son born 01/24/1951. Her husband was in the military and she was with him in 1956-1957 overseas. Her husband was Jesse M Brewer, they divorced in July 1958 in Jacksonville, FL.
Hers/His mothers name was (Josephine) and hers/his fathers name was (Larry). She was allergic to medicines with sulfa and also allergic to animal hair.
She has lived in various states in the south and I am not sure if she was born in FL or not. I know she spent time in Tampa, Orlando.
She was also an only child.
If anyone has any info, please contact me as soon as possible

I understand that they took him to Michigan, where the husband worked for the Automotive Industry. I would appreciate someone getting in contact with me if you can help me out.
What's the Protocol...

What's the protocol for listing adoptees in a family tree? In Family Tree Maker, you're able to list people with their birth parents and their adopted parents so that they appear in both family views. You can't do this in the Ancestry version of FTM, though.

Also, more importantly, I'm not sure how to list my illegitimate ancestor in the tree. Because of the church records, we know who her birth father was, but she was raised by someone else entirely. I'm prone to put her birth father, as it is "Genealogy," but the reality of the situation would dictate that her father was the man who raised her, and he should be next in the tree.

Any thoughts?

I am looking for any information on 2 children born to John Allen True and his wife Peggy True that were given up sometime during the 1940's or 1950's. The children would've been born in perhaps KY or TX. I am not positive on that part. If anyone has ANY information on this it would be greatly appreciated as this has remained a family mystery for years! Thanks in advance to anyone who has any info or can point me in the right direction....

William E. Walz(Guy Towler), Debra Walz & Hazel M. Boyd(Towler) update

I'd posted on this board looking for Hazel M. Boyd, hoping that if we'd found her we could locate the children she gave up for adoption. I do have some good news though, we have
found the sister we were looking for, born Debra Jean
Towler, adopted name, Debra J. Walz. Now we are
searching for her brother, born Guy Lynn Walz, adopted
name changed to William E. Walz. Sadly though, he may
have passed away, we found a social security death
notice(?) that he passed on 11-12-2002. We have not
told Debra about it yet as we are letting her digest
the wonderful news that she has half siblings, my
friend Tina being one of them. Apparently Guy(William)
wondered alot, didn't quite fit in with the Walz'
family, etc. Debra lost track of him awhile back, not
sure exactly when she last spoke, will find out. He
was married to a woman named Linda, not sure of any
other wives. Had children, only one name is known,
Janis. Both Debra and William lived in Littleton, CO.
Guy was also known to be in Las Vegas,, Salinas KA,
Vancouver BC in the early 70s, Central City, CO., and
somewhere in CA. If at all possible, if you locate any
info. on Guy(William E.Walz), such as where his
wife(s)or children are located, names, etc. please
contact me. By the way, the adoptive parents to Debra
and William were Harry Bernard "Bill" and Violet Marie
"Vi" Walz, they have both passed away.

Where do I begin? (Adopted Ancestor)

My husband’s ancestor was adopted and we have been trying to find out more information about him. We just received the ancestor’s death certificate which tells us his birth date, birthplace, and information regarding his parents such as name and birthplace. The ancestor was born back in 1860.
The problem is I don’t know where to begin. The death certificate states he was born in Maine but we know from other documents that his parents resided in Nova Scotia. I am assuming (I know, you should never assume concerning Genealogy, but…) that the parents on the death certificate are his legal parents not his biological parents.
Can someone give me some suggestions and point me in the right direction? Thank you so much.
Bizarre adoption: Russian from Germany to PA - 1909

Could I get your opinion on the following, please ?

Late NOV 1909, a woman from Kansas, travels on a ship from Hamburg to New York.
With her is a 2 month old baby, listed as born in Berlin, and both of them are listed as residing there.

In the States, she is going to visit her brother in law in PA (my gt-gd-uncle).
In the 1910 census, the woman is back with her family in Kansas , but no trace of the baby.
I looked everywhere for him - nothing until the 1930 census, where he is listed with my gt-gd-aunt as "born in Russia of Russian parents" - immigration & naturalization dates , and language spoken before coming to the States - all : "unknown".

All the names involved are so unique that I know it's them [dates and place of birth and her profession - all match].
Plus, a cousin told me about an adoption of "a boy from Russia".

The provenance of the baby is not what I find bizarre - I read on a board about Russian orphanages in Germany.

Can it be that:

the woman travels to Berlin - stays there a little while - adopts (legally or not) a baby and declares him as her own son to go back to the States, where she takes him to his "new" parents ?
Not being too legal, he is kept out of the census for a while ?

In 1909, was such a scenario common ? [ I mean illegal adoptions + "hiding" of a child]

Any help would be appreciated, than you.

[I think these names are really unique:
Laure & Gustave Bourquin, Olga Louise Humbert-Droz, all born in Switzerland
and their "son" Waldemar Humbert-Droz. ]

Confused about how to handle adoptive mother re: bio mom

I am hoping someone can relate or give some advice on how to handle my amom. I always was curious about my bio family and moreso my medical history. Amom supported me in wanting to locate my bio mother, but keep in mind that most of my family's friends do not know I was even adopted. My parents kept it quite a secret-I was their child, end of story. After already starting the search, she was getting more and more unsettled and against it. When I finally found bio mom, she began a severe depression about the whole thing and doesn't want me to have any contact with bio mom. Bio mom & I already have developed a close friendship and I do not want to lose touch with her and my half siblings. I moved out of the state that both sets of parents live in, so when I visit my aparents, it is difficult to break away to visit with bio mom since aparents want to spend all of my visit with me and my children and we stay in their home.
I am already grown, so its not like I am trying to replace her as a mother. I have reinforeced this over and over. Now that I have children, its even more difficult b/c both families want to spend time with the kids. I am at a loss. Can anyone relate to this?

Adoption Question

Hi,

I am trying to help a friend find her mother, but some things don't make since. Here is what we know for sure.

Birthmother = A
Child = B
Woman that Raised Child = C

A had B in 1962 in Washington Dc. B was then giving to C right after birth. C was about 56 years old when she was giving B. C lived in Maryland and was in the middle of a Divorce when she was giving B. C died in 1972 which left B to go live with C's son in-law.

On B's birth certificate, C erased A's name and wrote in C's name. B lost her birth certificate so she sent for a copy. They sent her the real one with A's name, age on it.

When B was little she was told by C that her mother was 16 and raped by a man that she babysat for, but the birth certificate gave a different age. On the birth cerificate is the address that A was living at when she gave birth. C told B that A lived in DC with A's sister. The address was an apartment building, we have a list of the tenants but have had not luck tracing them down.

Any advice on what to do would be great. My friend is at a loss as to what to do.

Thank you for your time and help,
Mrs. Scofield

How does a child born, living, and relinquished, in one state - get to another state, in order to be adopted THERE? Is this normally ok? Or are there "special circumstances" where this is ok to do? And, if the latter - what are the circumstances?

I really need some insight here - S-o-o-n!

I would truly appreciate any help! And, Thank you.

When we can't even have the information that is rightly our to begin with. Contact your Representatives and Sentors of your state before election!!! We as adoptee need to have a voice in changing the laws of our county. Please respone now before the records are lost forever!!! Rose

Found Cousin, Have Dilemma: Pls Help

After years of searching, I have found my first cousin who was adopted by her birth father's sister when her birth mother died shortly after my cousin's birth. In my searches, I finally found her adoptive mother's married name, and then, I hit a roadblock. Yesterday, feeling I had missed something, I went back to the brick wall, and within hours I did find my cousin. Many things in her adoptive family's listings says the word "Private." In the context of geneology, what does this mean? I do not if my cousin knows she is adopted, so I want to be very careful how I contact her (I'm thinking a letter). My mother and her mother were sisters. Any advice on how to proceed? Thank you.

Is it possible to find out whether a child who was born in 1895 was adopted? I have a birth certificate and then no further record of a great-uncle and I'm wondering if he was adopted. I've looked high and low for a death cert. and can't find one. The other reason I'm thinking he might have been adopted: he was born in the father's home town, but the parent's weren't living there at the time. They had recently married in and were living in her hometown, in another state. I can't figure out why a newly married, first time pregnant woman would be with her husband's family, not her family, and give birth to her child where his uncles live. Seems strange to me. BTW, there are no cousins in that family with the same or close birth date.

Laws for different states

Hi, fyi, every state has different laws for adoption issues.
just want everyone to realize its important for them to learn them, so they can know what to do in the state they need to search.
So ask questions, list your birthday, city, state, because sometimes, it depends on the year you were born, as what the adoption laws are.
Some states have revised laws, and again, you need to know that. The more armed people are with the laws, they stand a better chance of finding.
Some of the states have waivers, some are open.
Some states the adoptees can ask for their orig. birth cert.
or like alaska, adoptees just ask for info and they get it all.
Not the parents, just the adoptee.
In some states their are MUtual consent registry.
If both parties sign up , they can be reunited.
Usually people are finding by actively searching.
So by posting : m. or fe. birthday, and city, state in the subject line, it will help. ie. fe.09/05/48 Bronx, nyc
or m. 06/09/79 Mesa, az.
for someone searching : ISO (in search of) fe.or m. 05/06/78 Mesa,Az.

Most states you can send for non id.
and some you can put the waivers. Parents too.
some states, parents can update medical information.
for example: Arizona and ny.
Ask questions, also make sure you all sign up on www.isrr.net
print off those forms, and mail them. Its a mutual consent registry. Aunts uncles, siblings, parents, cousins, adoptees can all sign up on.
Joan
Unsealing 19th Century Records

Ok, here's the deal.

My Great-Grandmother was given up for adoption in 1899.

To my great benefit, this has been confirmed by 1900 Census Records which show which agency she was placed in.

However, she died in 1985, and never requested for her records to be unsealed.

Prior to her death, relatives DID find her, but she slammed the door on them, saying "that wasn't her life."

So, i've got her original name, and where and when she was given up for adoption.

I called up the agency (now absorbed into the Saint Vincent De Paul Society / Catholic Charities), and they did pull up her record, and it was confirmed to be her by her adoptive parent's names, but....

According to their lawyers, I have no right to get to those files.

Even though my great-grandmother is dead, she was put up for adoption over 100 years ago, and this is four generations back, they say I can't get to it.

Now, i'm so irritated, i'm going to bring lawyers to it, but has anyone dealt with this and / or came to some sort of solution?

Thanks,

Jason Real

Birth mother located --- now what?

I helped a friend locate his birth mother and I called her. She's 84 years old and she hung up on me. I understand that getting a call like that after 55 years is traumatic and she'll need time to think about it. How long should I wait before contacting her again?

My friend has composed a letter he wants to send to her via US Mail, but when should he send it?
