No weird "Ancestry.com DNA is temporarily unavailable" screen...making me think it was something they were doing, not me.
It would have been nice if they told me that, instead of the generic "system maintenance" message.

If you have Firefox, try clearing the cookies for just Ancestry. Ancestry seems to get confused regularly with cookies and will give random error messages. Or, try another browser and if the problem occurs on the other browser, it may really be a problem.

Why can't Canadians purchase AncestryDNA?

Why when there's a link at the top of the Ancestry.ca website for DNA with links to the store to purchase the kit, do we get refused to allow the purchase:

"There are problems with the current shopping cart.• Unable to calculate shipping and tax. Some items cannot be shipped to a Canadian address."

It seems to be available to UK residents. Makes me feel like I'm third class at Ancestry. ;-(

(same for purchasing FTM books - can't be bought from the Ancestry site - Tech support recommends buying through Amazon!)

Othere genealogy web sites that have DNA kits don't seem to have this restriction.
I had a similar situation with one of the kits I ordered. All it took was a call to customer support.

I've had varying degrees of success with Ancestry's CS so my recommendation there is "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again". Different CS reps have different levels of knowledge (or giving a damn. I can't tell which).

I ordered my DNA kit on 3/25/13 and received it about 5 days later. When I tried to activate the kits, an error message came up. I called Ancestry.com and was told there must've been some error in the ordering process. After two phone calls, nothing has been done. I'm out $99 (times 2) and have 2 useless DNA kits sitting on my counter at home. I am going to be patient and give them until 4/25/13 to make it a month but after that, I'm going to raise heck to get my money back. What a ripoff. Anyone else have this issue? Thanks.

I'm just guessing here, but I would bet Ancestry contracts out the actual lab work for their DNA test products. It's just not among the company's core competencies.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE to criticize Ancestry, and they do plenty of things that are frustrating, incompetent, and outright hostile to their customers -- but in this case I think they are probably not to blame.

Now they say that they are sending me”FREE" sample kit # three.

I don't understand. When I tested with Family Tree DNA, I did not have this problem and they only used a Q-tip for my maternal and paternal testing, no problems. My, my, how disappointed I am.
Thanks. That is helpful to know. They did fix the specific problem we talked about when this thread was started, but there are lots of other quirky things going on with the dna pages...missing ethnicity box, etc. the timing does sound about right re java thing and they are probably working t heir way thru the other issues as well

The broken pages started the day after the fix to Java to fix the vulnerability that had a goverment warning to turn off Java. Ancestry relies heavaly on Java and I think they have been caught by one of the fixes to prevent attacks thru web sites that use Java. If you have Java version 7 update 11 and you see the problems that may be why. Give them a week or so to find all the places that broke and it should come back to looking right.

Then maybe they can spend time running index updates so the Hints will be correct.

With all the seriousness on these boards, that one gave me a good chuckle :) Of course, that means that somewhere in the bowels of Ancestry, there is a programming error ... since the date someone joined should be a calculation by the software, not something that anyone entered themselves.

Barbara

I've seen a number of those. At first I thought that the people did it on purpose to say "it's none of anybody else's business when I joined" and wondered how they managed to make it give that date. :) Now I think it's just another glitch.

Yes, one other user on the DNA autosomal board just reported it as well. I did the same, cleared cache ets. Thus far, I found firefox browser and safari (via ipad) are ok, so it must be the developer did something affecting IE. I posted on the other help place (new community forum) that ancestry.com people monitor and have responded to before re image problems. Let's hope it gets cleaned up fast...makes it very hard to see matches.

All formatting is gone from the DNA pages. All the content on my AncestryDNA results pages are jumbled together. It looks like the HTML or DIV code may be broken.

Note that I was using the DNA pages about an hour ago without any problems. Once the problems first appeared, I cleared my cache and shredded all files in the Temporary Internet Files directory, just to make sure that the problem wasn't on my end. Problem still exists.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

I've been on hold trying to call Ancestry for the past 20 minutes.

Sorry to hear about this. 23andMe uses almost exactly the same sample kit. My BIL's and sister's samples both failed twice there. The third time I told then to chew on the inside of their cheeks a little bit before spitting and it worked. (Gross, I know!) Also, do it before you brush your teeth. What they need is enough skin cells from your cheeks and gums.
Good luck! I hope it works this time. I'm glad that they are giving you another chance. At 23andMe, they won't let you after two failures now.

Ordered November 5, 2012. They sent to (5 year old) old address, even tho' they sent something to me 6 months ago at correct address.

Said they sent a second test December 5th, 2012. Had not received by December 28th. They said they'd have a DNA supervisor email me. Never did. Called again January 2, 2013. Said they would request a THIRD test sent to me... we will see.

They offered me 2 extra weeks added onto my membership for the inconvenience, but wanted my CC info... I said no! And don't even ask me to take a brief survey when I still do not have my DNA test I paid for 2 months ago.

They say they can not express ship a kit to me. I think something is not going into the computer correctly... they keep using the same order#, which was "canceled"... and can't tell me the kit#'s of kit 2 or 3 that are/were sent out. I don't get it.

I want my DNA kit. I am not going to do this month after month.
I have sent in 5 Ancestry DNA kits and all of them have been rejected on a multitude of different time lengths reason being said that my sample did not contain enough DNA. Now, I've done several of these tests and have never had a problem. The 3rd test I even had a representative walk me through step by step. I am doing exactly what I am supposed to do. Fearing it was a mail delay causing my sample to "expire" I paid and had it overnight-ed to them....rejected, again and again. I call and have gotten NO help. They just tell me they will send another test. Has anyone else had this problem? It's really ridiculous.

I appreciate the suggestion but it's just not practical. The first test, ordered on November 5th shipped on November 12th to a very old address of mine. They did an error report on it November 26th and shipped another test to me on December 5th. The shipping address was correct this time, they tell me. If the test was received by any neighbor that cared, they would have had time to put it back in their mail box for redelivery or would have bro't it to my house. Anyone that did not care, probably tossed it out by now. (The test ships out from California "I think"... said the customer service rep... and I live in Arizona)For me to guess the multitude of possible addresses it might have gone to and then go to those places is not something I can or should have to do. I am afraid something else has gone wrong, computer imput wise, with this whole order and nothing is going out to me. At this point, I have spoken to them again today and a DNA department supervisor is supposed to be emailing me. We will see...

Mail does odd things during the holiday season. I have had packages delivered to similar house numbers and received their mail as well. I would certainly ask a few of the neighbors and check with the carrier. Also consider if there could be a reverse of the numbers - if you live at 772 could it be delivered to 727 or 277.

Test "lost" in mail

I ordered online a second DNA test at the end of October. A few days later, I realized that I did not receive the discounted price of $99 as promised, so I called and had error corrected. That was November 5th. DNA page showed that the test was mailed November 12th. When I did not get it in a timely fashion, I called ancestry.com. They told me they had sent it out and to give it a few more days. After doing this, and still not getting the test, I called again and discovered they had sent test to an address I had not lived in for 5 years. My first test had gone to my correct, current address, so I was a bit upset the second test went to older address. Ancestry canceled the lost test and ordered a new one for me.

As of today's date, December 26th, I still have not received the second "second" test. One time I called they said it had been mailed out on December 6th and that it was not 10 working days yet. Today, they told me it had been shipped out on December 5th, not 6th. They rechecked my address, my name, asked me to go to post office to see if I had mail there... I refused since it did not have a tracking number or a return receipt or anything that would make sense to do that. They asked if I lived in house or apartment... it's a house... then asked if I could go to my neighbors to be on watch for any packages going to them in error... I said no, I was not going to do that.

I mentioned that they had kept the same order number as the first lost test but I never received a notice saying what the second ship date or kit ID number was. I asked what the second kit ID number was, and they could not tell me. Said I would have to call tomorrow between 8 and 4:30 "here." I asked where "here" was ... Utah. Then I asked where tests shipped out from... silence, then, "pretty sure it's California, around Riverside". They offered to cancel the second lost test and reorder again and I said NO, I was not going to do the same thing I had done a month ago. I said I expected to get some type of expedited mailing if, in fact, they had now lost TWO kits mailed to me.

They said there was no way for them to send kit to me any faster than regular shipping. But, supposedly, tomorrow the folks at "executive offices" will be able to tell me the new kit ID number and will pursue this mess from there!

UGGH! This is crazy... where is my test? Will it be March before I get it??!

What is the scoop!? I really do not get warm fuzzies from ancestry.com's customer service folks. They never reply to emails on other matters and they never seem to implement any of the ideas or suggestions given to them. I am not happy.
