I guess this is something else that was left out when the new people who formulated the new FTM software(2008/2009/2010) did their thing. So many things were left out. Just a simple index but they did not think that was necessary.

I am working on my second set of books and am looking forward to ordering them for the holidays. They are getting quite large and it would help to locate items quickly if there was an option to generate an index in the back. I was thinking that photos or items could be tagged with a first and last name. MyCanvas can then collect this information and generate a listing of all of the pages in which that particular tag appears. I think this would be a very, very useful feature. Thank you.

Including sources in MyCanvas family history book

I am currently compiling a family history using MyCanvas. I think it is important when putting the effort and expense into such an endeavour to say what your sources or references are - ie how do you know any given "fact".

I have discovered that there is no provision for automatically generated footnotes or endnotes and I have confirmed the lack of facility with MyCanvas staff.

I maintain my family tree using another program (Relatively Yours) which produces good reports including endnotes and I am working on a solution to incorporate these endnotes into the MyCanvas book.

Adding a text page is no problem. The issue is more linking the notes back to the MyCanvas pages and dealing with the repetition. Thus I thought I would ask here if anybody else has tackled this problem and come up with a solution they would like to share.

Regards
Anne
Canberra, Australia

I managed to retrieve the "lost project document" by using the browser information that I had saved. Somehow I had been using another version of MyCanvas because the tools that I was working with on that project are not exactly the same ones that have been standard before and since that incident. Are you experimenting with a new format for MyCanvas?

MYCANVAS IS BROKEN!

Hello Ancestry.com - MyCanvas was malfunctioning on 24 June 2009. I attempted to print an excerpt from a newspage from Ancestry.com in a custom format. After I completed the document as I wanted it and printed it, I was unable to save it. I kept getting a login box which ignored my attempts to login by any method. However, when I used the browser backup arrow I was returned to the home page for MyCanvas and I was obviously logged in. But, I was still unable to save my project. I sent a feedback message to Ancestry, but I have not heard from Ancestry.com about this problem. Consequently I have lost the document that I had worked so hard to prepare. I did save the browser info if that will help you retrieve my work. Please advise of your solutions.

MyCanvas poster

I ordered several 24x36 posters a couple months back, and although the advertising said it would be printed on quality paper, it didn't say it would be PHOTO paper.

It would be nice to have a choice between PHOTO paper and something such as PARCHMENT paper. At least a parchment could be two-hole punched and folded nicely to fit into a family scrapbook, for those that choose to do that instead of framing and hanging their poster. Have you ever tried to fold a PHOTO in half? It cracks the picture and gives ugly, eneven white torn lines. What a waste.

MyCanvas - Please give us a choice of the type of paper to have posters printed on.
Re: remove spouse line on poster

I figured out how to "remove" lines on the pedigree poster if you have blank areas

Step 1 - Mask the area with a "blank" text box.

- Choose one of the more evenly toned backgrounds (a single solid color or parchment type background with edge shading is OK, but pattern probably won't work)

- Make a text box. Place it over the where you want to cover up chart lines. Type into it to make it larger (you can adjust font sizes to not have to type so much) Don't worry that you can see the text and the line - just get it sized right.

- In the properties toolbar for the text box, click the option to have this box be "on top" of everything else.

Step 2 - Now adjust the colors of the text box

- Choose a solid background for your text box. Set the background color of the text box to match the background of your poster. Use the color picker (eye dropper) to select the background color of your poster.

- Set your font color to that same background color and now you have a plain square that blends right into the background of the poster.

You can still float a photo overtop the text box, just be sure to choose to have the photo be on top so that the text stacks on top of the blank line and the photo stacks on top of your masking text box.

You may have to play with it and test it with "print to PDF" and print previews to be sure you don't have hard square edges of the text box showing up. if you do, then you must have a varied tone background. You may want to choose another background or try picking a slightly different color from the background for your text box and font.

Great poster

I created a poster chart and just got it in the mail and want to report on it in case there are others who are wondering how those turn out. It took me forever to take the plunge and order one, I'll definitely be doing more..

I made a family tree chart and I added lots of stuff to it to make a sort of family tree history collage - photos, scanned images, records images, a map, and text boxes for obituaries and historical content (forcing it to tiny size 6 font, I worried about legibility). I added drop shadows some highlighting and used a few other tricks to highlight areas and cover over bare chart areas in one line that doesn't trace back so far. I wanted to toss it all on there because the whole concept was to share all those nice things I've scanned in as a collage with the pedigree chart there for context plus I wanted to test all these items to see how they printed out before considering doing more posters or a book. Well, all the tiny font I worried about is perfectly legible, the shadowing and layers are crisp and don't bleed into each other, the colors are perfect, the paper is a high quality and it came in a great heavy tube so I can safely reuse that to send it on to final destination.

Anyone hesitating to order a poster based on worries about whether it's really going to look right should inspect their work carefully to ensure they are submitting what they truly want and know that you really will get back what you send in. It's terrific, it looks even nicer in person than zoomed in on the screen - well worth the $20

I'd encourage you to revisit the current MyCanvas area and experiment with the editing controls you have there. It's a lot more flexible now than it was when I first tried it out a year ago.

UPS can deliver on Saturdays, but will do so only if an extra fee is paid. Their two-day delivery service does not count weekends into their delivery timeline, as is shown in the link I included in my previous post.

Anyway, as I understand it, Ancestry's offer of expedited shipping only means just that expedited SHIPPING. Not expedited handling of any of the previous steps, such as printing or order processing.
UPS website did not update that it received the actual packages until 1/5. That tells me Ancestry didn't give them physically to UPS until Monday, 1/5.
The initial order was sent on 12/23 to Ancestry. With 2 holidays and 4 weekend days, Ancestry was still 2 days late getting it to UPS for delivery. It should have been here on 1/2. And UPS does deliver on Saturdays.

If UPS did not provide the two-day shipping that you paid extra for, then you should be complaining to UPS, since that is the vendor that Ancestry used for the expedited shipping. I believe that UPS' definition of "two-day" is different than what you expected. If the notification to UPS on 31 Dec 2008 that the book was ready for shipping was received by UPS after the UPS driver had already made his pickup that day at the production facility, then the next day that he would have made a pickup would have been on 2 January, a Friday. Weekends are not included in UPS' delivery estimates, so the first day after the order was picked up would have been Monday, 5 Jan and the 2nd day would have been Tuesday, 6 Jan, which was the day on which you said you did get delivery. Sounds to me like you got exactly what you paid for -- both from Ancestry and from UPS.

Look at this link: http://www.ups.com/content/us/en/shipping/time/service/secon...
I'm not sure about the quality of their books, but I ordered posters 12/23/08 choosing the option of 2nd day Expedited Shipping (this costs more but I had family in town and I was truly hoping to give them as gifts while they were here). Even with MyCanvas' minimum 5 day processing period for posters (minus weekends and the two holidays) my first package won't be delivered until 1/6/09! I should have had it on Friday, 1/2/09. I had to make 2 calls to Ancestry Customer Service line. Each time they told me that I would get an email when it shipped. Well, I finally did receive an email on 12/31 saying it "shipped" (UPS). So, I logged into the UPS website and for over 60 hours, all it said for the status was "Billing Information Received". They didn't even have the actual contents yet - only the electronic billing information for the pick-up. I'm going to ask for a credit for "their version of expedited shipping". Now, as a result, I will never order anything through them again. Buyer beware - don't order anything with the intent to get it when they say it will be delivered. Ancestry's shipping procedures leave MUCH to be desired.

Hi,

I am putting together a family tree poster for our expected child. I started with the 'Standard' poster type on Ancestry Press. I selected 24x18 size with the hope of filling in five generations. There is a line under the 'home person' that is intended for a spouse. I want to remove that line since it has no relevance to this project. When I view the sample posters, there is one example (Sara Michelle Curry) that appears to eliminate this line. But how? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Every time I've tried to print my family tree poster project, it's a disaster. The resolution on a 36x24 poster is 30 DPI - 10% of what an average laser printer considers legible. I've tried both normal and "high quality" printing with the same results. In addition, no matter what I do the image will not print properly on the page. If I print as is, the image prints in landscape on a portrait page. If I try to change to a landscape page, the image prints in portrait. I'm using a Mac with OSX, Firefox 3 and an Epson R1800.

Well let us know if you publish one. I'm really interested in what to expect from the quality for such a low price.

I plan to get a few books, but the main one I want right now comes up to 264 pages, so I either have to wait until they expand the limit again, or figure out how to split the book in half. It would be nice if the online editor gave you that option.

Anyone use the leather bound albums to print up your family trees? I can believe there are no references to this in a topic. This thread is suspiciously empty. Anyone??
