Saving Images from Ancestry.com

I pretty sure this is an IE7/Vista issue, rather than FTM or Ancestry.com, but many FTM users must be experiencing this.

I have Vista 64 bit, running IE7. Using FTM 2006. When I view an image (say a census page) in Ancestry and click 'Save to My Computer', although I navigate to a particular folder and save, my computer will only save to a temporary file. I then need to navigate to the temp file and save a second time 'for real'.

I've been able to determine that this is a Vista or IE7 security blanket, but I can't figure out how to turn it off for this site (or any others that are legitimate).

Thanks,

Paul

I don' have an answer, but its doing that to me too. It's driving me crazy. I've only been using a Vista computer for a few days, but wouldn't you think Vista would allow you to overide that security issue and write directly where you wanted to place the file if you were aware of the source. I hope has run into this and knows how to overide it.

Paul,

I just uses MSIE, found a Census Image that I wanted, clicked on the Disk ICON, Save to My Computer, selected my DeskTop and the file was there when I was done.

Russ,

Thanks for trying to re-create the prblem. Are you using XP or Vista? While I didn't make it clear in my first post, this only started happening when I got a new computer with Vista. XP behaved as you describe your experience.

This is a Vista feature. Its part of the UAC (user access control)to prevent malicious programs from running, etc. It runs everything as a "normal user" requiring you to specifically "run as admin" on every program every time to get full access.

You can run ie7 as admin (right click, run as Administrator) or go to control panel, user accounts and turn off UAC.

Paul,

Since you mentioned Vista, that is what I used. I have both, use both, and don't have a problem with either. I can Save the PDF file where I want to .

I've only had this problem with Vista. This problem is complicated further in IE8. In IE7 my downloads went to a "virtualized" folder for my protection and I could open that folder to drag my saves to their real destination. In IE8 they also do this but do not give you access to the virtualized folder. I have seen suggestions about turning off UAC to overide this and that works but it leaves your computer unprotected from other attacks.
A better approach is to make http://content.ancestry.com a trusted site by going to Tools, Internet Options, click the Security tab and enter "http://content.ancestry.com" as a trusted site. Then your saves will go where you want them to. Remember its content.ancestry.com not ancestry.com.

I am unable to do this in IE 7.0.6001.18000
When I go to Tools/Internet Options/Security/Trusted Sites/Sites, enter "http://content.ancestry.com" in the Add bar, click Add I receive the following error:
Sites added to this zone must use the https:// prefix. This prefix assures a secure connection.

There is a small box in the Trusted Sites dialog window. "Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone." It is checked by default. You need to uncheck it. At least this is the case with IE8. I had to do it. Im assuming it's the same with IE7. By the way IE8 has some nice features that IE7 lacks.

The only thing I use IE for is Ancestry.

I was glad to find this thread because I have had this problem and gotten no help from Ancestry. Unfortunately, when I tried the fix suggested--adding content.ancestry.com to trusted sites and unchecking the Require Server Verification box--I could no longer even view an image. Instead, I would be kicked back out to the search page of ancestry.com. Since switching to Vista, Ancestry has become virtually unuseable for me because of the problem with saving files.

That didn't help. Now I get a script error.

Sorry, this fix worked for me. I thought I found something that might help others. Too bad no one else seems to be able to duplicate my results. You did precede content.ancestry.com with the "http://" I assume.

No criticism of you intended; this is a very quirky thing. I set it up properly, but it is Ancestry that seemed to have the problem, not Vista. When I got kicked out from the content webpage it was to an Ancestry url with "security" in it.
The best I can do is to save to an external drive--at least I can locate my file easily. Then I copy back to my hard drive.

With and without "http://"

I also believe it is an Ancestry issue as I have been using Vista without any problems for 2 months. This issue started Saturday.
