All I know is at the link in my first post, it says, "Source Information:
Ancestry.com. U.S. Headstone Photos [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: The Generations Network, Inc., 2005. Original data: Photos provided by Allen Wheatley."

Does anyone know if they do this if your tree is private?

Even better (IMHO):
http://usgwtombstones.org/

The county pages within the states list cemetery transcriptions available, as well as links to photos.

Thank you for pointing this out. The original plan was to make the U.S. Headstone Photos database be a one-stop location to view all U.S. headstone photos on Ancestry.com. We decided not to go that route, but apparently forgot to update the database description accordingly (at least the expanded part). The text you read has now been removed and the database title has been changed to "Selected U.S. Headstone Photos."

Further, no user-contributed headstone photos attached to trees were ever added to this database. The last update was in 2005. All of the photos were contributed by Allen Wheatley.

As far as uploading headstone photos to your family tree, that is a great practice and should be encouraged. I wish someone would take pictures of my ancestors headstones and upload them to Ancestry.com so that I could see them (I've never seen any, ever). What a meaningful service to descendants and fellow researchers user-uploaded headstones can be.

Thanks again for helping us improve the information on Ancestry.com.

Thanks for clearing that up, Chris. I was just thinking it would be nice to hear an Ancestry person.

By the way, there are 10 Lydiksen's on Find-A-Grave, 7 with photos. Click on over and check 'em out, you never know, you might find an ancestor. :)

Those free sites are nice but almost worthless. The res of tombstone photos is tooo low so you dont get a good readable photo alot of the time. Find-A-Grave is better but nothing matches taking them yourself alas at full res.

Just to make an attempt to clear up my side of this story.

Years ago I made a deal with Ancestry.com where they could use selected photos of mine and they would post, with those photos, that they come from http://teafor2.com and I'd get free access to Ancestry.com

Well they never posted where my site where the pictures came from, thus teminating the agreement. I donate no more of my pictures from teafor2.com and they no longer give me free access to their paid site.

They have my agreement and can use the 70,000 pictures I took, but every one of them is available, for free, on my web site.

If I could, I'd un-ring that bell but it cannot be done.

Allen,

Thank you for clarifying this Ancestry.com boondoggle. Guess they are trying to develop better relationships with the Real World, but still don't seem to learn from earlier mistakes.
