I can add an unrelated person on Family Tree Maker on my computer, but I cant see how I can do it on my tree on Ancestry.

Also, is it possible to "update" the tree on the web, or do I always have to delete it and then upload a new tree?

The Ancestry Member Tree program is meant for display, not to be a genealogy program. It has only very limited tools.

There are several ways to add a person, all of them making the person "related" to a person or a couple.

Just add your person in any way you like. Then go to that person's individual overview page, click 'edit this person', click the 'relationships' tab, and use the links at the right (the red x's) to remove parent or parents. Doing this will not remove the individual parent(s), it will just unlink them from the one you added.

The new person will now be freestanding.

The AMT setup does not allow uploading just part of a gedcom file, or 'updating'; you either upload it or you don't.

If there are items you would want to transfer from existing tree to a new upload (such as photos, stories), just give the new uploaded tree a different name and you can make the transfers manually. You can also on your home computer with many genealogy programs create a new gedcom file containing only new or updated individuals or families. You can upload this gedcom with a new tree name and then manually add them to your existing tree.

Can you give me one option to add an unrelated person as I cant find any options?

There is no such option in the Trees.

You have to add a person as someone's child or parent, then unlink that other person as described above.
