Google newspapers were awesome. I remember spending many hours searching through their database when it was out, it was so easy and I got such tremendous results. One could search by location, a time frame, a name, almost anything you wanted, it was the best collection I have ever seen. It's a terrible shame they abandoned it, there was so much included in it. In a couple of forums on the web, I've seen it speculated that Ancestry may have bought at least some of the Google newspapers Collection, and if that is the case, I see it two different ways. One, it could be a good thing because those Collections are a proven great resource. But on the other hand, it would be a dirty rotten shame for the Collection to now be available only through a paid site and whose newspaper Search options haven't proven to be of much value. I guess only time will tell.
