It does seem fruitless to ask for sensible changes to the relationship calculator. Just look back on this thread and notice that an Ancestry employee named Mike Lawless said he was "working on it," but even the simplest change--to make displaying the calculated relationship optional as it was in the past--did not occur. I have given up. I am now using it to calculate relationships and then I am adding a "fact" called "relationship to [me]" where I will enter the information. When I am finished I will remove myself as the designated person so as to eliminate from the top of the page all the calculated relationships. The most annoying thing is that a direct GGP, whom I KNOW to be a direct GGM because she is the wife of the identified GGF and NOT a second wife, is identified as something like "wife of second cousin of 3rd GGF." Many of the people back eight-15 or more generations are related to me in multiple ways, but I cannot select the relationship I want to display. I use FTM to calculate all the relationships and confirm that the person is in fact a direct GGP. Another annoying thing is that even if you remove yourself as the designated person, thus eliminating all the calculated relationships from the display, they are NOT gone forever and will pop up AGAIN if you re-designate yourself.
