Basic question about hints

If I get 8 hints showing connections to other members' family trees, is there an advantage to me to connect up with all of them, especially if they have no new information for me, or if some of their information is wrong? If I ignore them, then will I never hear again if they add some relevant information to their tree?

Also, I don't see much of an advantage (other than getting 5000 people into my tree) in copying all the siblings, husbands, wives, etc. that are not directly related to my tree in some way -- or am I missing something? I'm not really interested in the siblings of a GG from the 1720's and their descendants, who will be hardly related to me in any way -- right?

I'm pretty new to this, as you can see. Thanks for any direction you can offer.
