In addition to this suggestion of always using the merge duplicate feature instead of deleting, you want to avoid creating duplicates to begin with. Instead of entering a person in the tree a second time, follow these instructions when you know a person already exists in your tree and you find they have a relationship to someone else already in your tree: http://help.ancestry.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5554/
