I'm not quite sure why you don't like the pedigree view. It's really best to work on one line at a time anyway when you expand to the ancestors of your great-great-grandparents.

Also, I highly recommend using offline software right from the beginning. It makes it easier to find bad data such as child born after mother died or after she was way past childbearing age. Even experts can occasionally miss such discrepancies. It also helps identify duplicates in your tree that you might have entered as separate people. My husband has 3 great-great-grandmothers who share a common ancestor.
