Hi
I have the volume and page # for a marriage record of an ancestor (from 1887) - I want to find out the maiden name of his wife - is it possible to search online for the name of the other party to the same marriage?

Thanks in advance.

Lisa

Inbound Passenger Lists on Ancestry yet?

Hello

Does anybody know if the Inbound Passgenger Lists BT26 are on Ancestry yet as I can't find them? Or does anybody know when they are available?

I am looking for any info or links to ships that came to the UK. I have two passengers that sailed from Johannesburg to the UK around 1900-1901. Their names are Ellen James or Ellen Spry born 1875 and her sone George L James born 1900 in Johannesburg.

Hope somebody can help! Thank you

Dissappointing start!

I have just subscribed to this website and as a test I searched for an ancestor in the 1871 census who I knew the whereabouts of. I have the family's axact details from the copy of the census in my local library. Imagine my surprise when I could not find him or any member of his family no matter what criteria I entered. Luckily digging through my records I found that I had recorded the reference, folio and page which I entered and found that the family who are quite clearly (to me at least) PUGH have been indexed as PUCH. No wonder I couldn't find them.
Now I know a work of this magnitude is going to have mistakes but one mistake in one search is for me 100% failure.
In future when I can't find someone how much confidence am I going to have in this website that they really aren't there.
For anyone interested the census ref is RG10/5655 Folio 82 Page 9 schedule no 44 (5 family members).

Create a new tree

Begin by entering the information you already know . . . .-

see what is new
http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/pt/tutorial.aspx

Export GEDCOM

You've asked for this feature and we're happy to say it is finally here. On the "My Ancestry" page look for the "Export GEDCOM" link. This process will allow you to export all the names, sources, relationships, etc. in GEDCOM format.

For information that GEDCOM does not handle well (e.g., photos, stories, Ancestry records) we provide a link back to the original item on Ancestry.

<< has anyone tried it?

Hugh W

Irish data - Griffiths index and Tithe records

Can anyone else who has a full UK membership tell me if they are having trouble accessing these databases.
If I access the tithe records using a name, it does not display any detail other than "location and year" and if I click on these I am taken to an upgrade page.
The Griffiths index works in a fashion for example if I input the name Dolan and Gowlat townland it gives two exact match returns which I can access but all the other hits listed underneath also take me to an upgrade page if I click on them. I thought UK membership gave full access to the Irish data. I have emailed support 4 days ago but had no response. Last weekend the Griffiths search WAS working perfectly so perhaps this is some kind of bug.

May be a stupid question about this website ...

I can't believe I haven't done this before! When searching for a marriage record on this website, if you click on the page number where it says 'click here to see others on page' what exactly does that show you? What page is it talking about? Can I assume that if two people have the same folio and page number that they married each other? If so, how come sometimes I get more than two names?!

If it turns out that I could have found the partner that simply after all these years I will be ... cross...

Many thanks in anxious anticipation!

Andrea

I have a full membership on Ancestry. I have done all I can at this time using records in Canada and US but now need to use the site to locate records in Ireland. Any suggestions on how I do that? I am having trouble finding records on this site or irish relations. Many thanks, leanne

GRO Indexes - Pages Not Scanned?

Has anyone else found that Ancestry seems not to have images of 100% of the GRO index pages?
I was looking for the birth of an A. Shaw in the 1968 Dec quarter. No results were found. When trying all the Shaws in that quarter, I saw that page 28 of 113 ends with Mark Sharratt and page 29 of 113 starts with Jenette Dawn Shaw. I am sure that a page must be missing, especially as there are several surnames between Sharratt and Shaw in other quarters.
What would be the best way to inform Ancestry of this?

Viewing "others on page" in Free Marriage Index

I'm new to this - so forgive my ignorance please! Why, when searching the Free BMD Index (Marriages) and choosing to view a record, and then clicking the green numeral (bottom left) to view others on the page, does the resulting image often contain an odd number of individuals - eg three men and two women. I know that the names of both individuals marrying each other should appear here, so what happens to the 'odd one out'? I'm intrigued.

Many thanks for anyone who can shed any light on this.

Click here to go back to the page you started from.
>>>>

I have tried to email support, but have no answere, and have phoned support (0800 number) who cannot help.

1. Can anyone else use the connection service at this time?

2. If so what am I doing incorrectly?

3. Or it tells me the details have been added when they havent. Some have worked however. Is it the software? Problems with this site? The fact I'm using a mac?

Its pretty frustrating. I've a lot of details to enter but I can't get them on!

How to Report transcription errors

Is there a way of reporting transcription errors and who to ?

In the 1851 Census, a family of Whitehouse is incorrectly transcribed as Whitchouse.

The first Whitehouse can be forgiven as it does look like Whitchouse, but when you look at how the enumerator has written the letter e and has written the second occurance of Whitehouse, it becomes obvious it's an e and not a c.
They've also really shoddily transcribed bushbury as buckbury.

Anyway, moan over, is there anywhere to report this to ?

Cheers
Ailsa
hello all, I have just started researching my family's past and im a bit confused on this one. I recently tracked my nan's dad and his family back to the census 1901 and 1891. I have found they are using two different last names for the same people (Whitfield and Whifield). I am finding this really confusing as I dont know what sirname I should look for now. I know that on Fred Whitfield's marrige certificate it say Whitfield not Whifield so can someone please contact me and help me clear things up these are the two links

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?ti=5538&ind...

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?ti=5538&ind...
Incorrect counties reported in FreeBMD searches

Strange things are appearing in search results using Ancestry's version of FreeBMD!

Abergavenny, Herefordshire (should be Monmouthshire)
Bangor, Anglesey (should be Caernarvonshire)
Chepstow, Gloucestershire (should be Monmouthshire)
Ellesmere, Flintshire (should be Shropshire)
Holywell, Denbighshire (should be Flintshire)
Merthyr Tydfil, United Kingdom (should be Glamorgan)
Monmouth (1837-1939), Gloucestershire (should be Monmouthshire)
Narberth, Carmarthenshire (should be Pembrokshire)
Neath (1837-1970), Breconshire (should be Glamorgan)
Newport M, Glamorgan (should be Monmouthshire)
Oswestry, Denbighshire (should be Shropshire)
Pontypridd, United Kingdom (should be Glamorgan)
Presteigne (1837-77), Herefordshire (should be Radnorshire)
Swansea, United Kingdom (should be Glamorgan)
Wrexham (1837-1974), Cheshire (should be Denbighshire)

... and so on.

In fact most of the Welsh registration districts give the incorrect county. I think these are all registration districts which did cover more than one county but it's the least obvious county that is appearing!

Ian
Why can't the Learning Centre tab be shown on the UK site?

I sometimes want to check a surname distribution and have to log on to ancestry.com to do so. Most of the things available there are free so I can't see why it cannot be displayed on ancestry.co.uk

Some things will need further subscription but that happens already on other things so I can't see it being a bar to it being there.

MB

UK Surname boards/ I need Help please!

I need help in finding my surname boards in the U.K. I just don't seem to understand how the boards work in England. (O.K. I am an American). Here, I change from surname to surname by typing in a find board at the bottom of the pages. But when I try this on the UK page I am leaving the UK boards and jumping back to the States boards. Or are they the same? I am seeking Willingham or Winningham surnames. I have read a lot of posts on the UK board and noted the ones who really seem to know a lot but am hesitant to write them directly for help. I need the kindness of strangers please. Thanks.

Exporting your own tree from Ancestry?

Hi
I seem to be going mad trying to find a solution to this problem.

I upload a GEDCOM to ancestry from my offline software, and have spent a lot of time in Ancestry extending my tree.

Now I would like to export a copy of the enlarged tree into my offline software.

But it seems I can't, so my only option seems to be, to do it by hand, copying all the new people and citations over, with all the risks of typo's etc.

Someone please tell me I am wrong. If I can upload surely I can download my own tree.

Thanks

Try searching for anyone with a birthplace of Averham (no other information) in the 1881 census (Eng) my result = nil, now cut n paste the Averham into the keyword field, result 293 of which many are born in Averham, why is the birthplace search not picking them up? the CDs return 147 on the East Midlands CD.
I am just changing over to a new laptop.

Having big problems with Ancestry. The census search forms are not always appearing. 1901 England is OK but 1901 Wales only shows a list of counties. Same happens on a lot of other forms.

I have had this happen before but usually self-cleared.

My old laptop is OK

I have been through the two comparing settings but can't see the difference.

I have turned Norton off completely without any effect.

I have cleared the cache.

I don't seem to have any cookies blocked in IE6 though it is showing some blocked on those pages but shows them also blocked on pages that do show the form.

Can anyone suggest anything that I might have overlooked?

Martin briscoe

i saw a message posted about Ancestry giving free access on Tuesday (US Independence Day).

Has anyone seen an official announcement about this?

I presume it to the US part of Ancestry.com which could be useful but if it includes UK records then I will tip off some friends.

Apparently OriginsNetwork is also free on Tuesday.

MB

Missing Data - 1841 & 1851 Census

Hello,

1841:
HO107/153/11 - Liskeard Cornwall
On Origins it comes through and is very readable. If I search on any of the names or the reference I get no results. Also a search on Liskeard as civil parish gets negative results.

1851:
HO107/1946
Unfortunately I don't have the full reference for this one, but for the life of me - I can't find Kenn in Somerset. My transcript I have from Gordon Beavington has them in the civil parish of Kenn, but if I search on it (or family I have there) I come up with negative results. There are parts of 1946 on Ancestry - just can't find Kenn.

I'm not sure what I should do with information - but I thought I'd start here, and see if anyone can see if it's just a "me" error and advise me whom I can notify if not.

Thanks
Rona

Where have the BMD Images gone? (England & Wales, post ~1910)

Hi folks,
Until about a week or so ago, there was a listing on Ancestry for the (Beta versions) of the B,M & D index IMAGES for England & Wales

(Not just the transcriptions from FreeBMD)

It now seems they have diappeared: we still can see the images on a sort of "merged" page. But only for the period 1837 to about 1910, where the FreeBMD transcriptions finish.

There doesn't seem to be any way of getting directly to the images for the post-1910 period (as we could until very recently)

Can anyone help?

Cheers
Alan

about this board

I had a chat with the Ancestry people in London about support here
and company rules mean that Myfamilyinc employees must not post here without permission

A senior member of the team will be contacting their public relations department to try and arrange help for us all here

With a thousand employees (twice as many as Google Inc) there obviously has to be a system.

Another possibility are a private board for users, or a beta test group, where a useful dialogue will be allowed

This could be like "The Danish Connection" on http://www.myfamily.com/ which is a private board usd by list members

also part of
http://www.myfamilyinc.com/default.aspx

see
http://hotjobs.yahoo.com/Company-Profiles/M/MyFamily-com-Inc...

looking for a PARTNERSHIP DEVELOPMENT MANAGER to help identify and obtain digital publication and distribution rights to significant historical record collections from private and public institutions throughout the UK & Ireland.

I have lost the exact search tab on my screen, all I have is a little brown tab with no writing in it.
If i go into my browser history and call up an old search then I can get back the exact tab but it does not show the words exact only a small blue tab (driving me bonkers).
I have just deleted all my cookies but it made no difference.

The other thing that is extremely annoying lately is the search on the UK census collection, if you fill in the Birthplace - County or Island field then it finds no results for 1851 - however if you go to the search for 1851 only, then of course it finds them.

I get the feeling ancestry don't listen to this board anymore but fingers crossed!

cheers,
Sharon

Isleworth doesn't seem to be included in the 1851 parishes for Middlesex. I am looking for a family that I know were living in Brewers Lane, Isleworth in 1851. I have looked at this film in the past at the LDS. If you search for anyone residing in Isleworth in 1851 it gives a zero result. If you search for someone born in Isleworth it gives a lot of results but all living elsewhere. Has Isleworth been included? I know that Isleworth is part of Brentford registration district, but after trying many search combinations still come up with nothing for anyone born in Isleworth. I have just found out that a search on the place of residence as Hounlow gives a zero result also.
Has anyone else had the same problem.

I've just looked for a marriage on the above and was pleasantly surprised to find a new search criterion - namely spouse's name.

On following a search through, however, I found that it is no longer possible to view names on a page or to see what the actual page in the volume is.

This renders the new serach facility unusable. Is it a mistake or has someone at 'Ancestry' got a twisted sense of humour ?! The pages were accessible a few days ago.

I have been subscribing to Ancestry for a couple of years now, and according to 'My Account' i am subscribed to 'Quarterly UK and Ireland Records Collection'.
How does this differ from the 'UK Deluxe Membership' - Do I get more, do I pay less, etc?

Anomalies in GRO Index (searches of)

Okay, I KNOW it's not the final release. The searches are missing out some quarters when you search on BOTH surname and forename.

Search 1944 for Curtis (surname only) births get this lot:

Christine A Curley Barry T Curtis 1944 Jan-Feb-Mar
Jonathan Currah Brian P Curtis 1944 Apr-May-Jun
Eric R Currie Joan M Curtis 1944 Jul-Aug-Sep
Josephine B Curran Edward G Curtis 1944 Oct-Nov-Dec

Search for Graham Curtis births in 1944 and you get only two quarters returned.

Carol A Curtis Raymond S Curzon-swallow 1944 Apr-May-Jun
Eric R Currie Joan M Curtis 1944 Jul-Aug-Sep

Pauline

1841 Census

The latest issue of Ancestors magazine, published by The National Archive, has a short article on the 1841 census showing Laryn Brown of Ancestry scanning some pages, (about 30,000), which have never previously been scanned or filmed because the quality was poor. A picture of one page filmed 30 years ago showed no names, but the same page scanned using the latest equipment did show the names, very faint but possibly readable.

Apparently Ancestry are planning to release the 1841 census in the spring, so somewhere between April and the end of June, I hope.

Viv
