James Bolton 1859 - circa 1902

I am trying to find out more details on a family mystery. My husbands great-grandfather James Bolton was born in Wigan, Lancashire, UK in June 1859. He married Sarah Ann Pennington in 1887 and moved to Oswestry, Shropshire, UK and they had 3 children: Evelyn, Charles & a baby boy John who died in infancy in 1892. Sometime after the baby died, Jaames abandoned Sarah and his children and left to go and seek his fortune. We know he left England early 1890s and I have found a record of him entering Lake Bennett, Yukon on SS Gleaver (Source: Gold Rush Database Sources NWMP at Dawson Docks).
The story in the family is that he was involved in a pub brawl and was shot dead somewhere in the Yukon in about 1902.
I have found a possible record of Sarah & the children travelling to the Yukon in 1902 presumably either to look for him or to bury him?
I have searched the cemetary records for Jame's grave and can find 2 possibles - 1 of an unknown Englishman and the other alloted to "Bolton".
The family would love to learn more of what happened to James. Sarah would never speak of him so it is a mystery.
If anyone can help it would br brilliant to hear from you.

Initial posting to a new board & list

This is an initial posting to a new board, and posted in the hopes that it will spur others to do likewise. My father was born in Dawson on 16 Jun 1918, and while he did not die there, some of his more direct descendants named Nicholas and Cann did.

I also Admin the Yukon Territory board as well, though not presently the list, and I invite anyone who reads this to post his/her own information for the use of others. You may even find some new "cousins" in doing so. The gateway is open between this board and the companion mailing list, which I also Admin, so that means any query posted to this board will also go automatically to the list. Since they are brand new, I am the only subscriber to the list at present, just as I am the only user of the board, but I hope to change that very soon.

Please drop me a line if you have any questions, you will find my e-mail address by clicking my name above. Please be aware, though, that I simply do not have the resources or time to devote to responding to all individual queries, so you will normally do better by simply posting a query to this board or the list if you are a subscriber. As long as your information pertains to any past or present cemetery in Yukon Territory, whether an "official" or unofficial one, or anyone buried in one of them, it will be appropriate for posting.

Welcome to one and all. I look forward to working with you all, and sharing our interest in genealogy.

David
List/Board Admin
