Ellen Curly born abt 1831 was a 21-year-old married laundress living in County Cork, Ireland She was married to peter Fitzgerald, (an army officer in UK)
When she became pregnant in an extramarital affair with soldier Amos Brooks. . She gave birth to a baby girl, then murdered her by burying her alive, on 21/03/1851 The child being 2 months old She was then arrested and confessed to the murder. Instead of hanging, Ellen Curly's death sentence was commuted to transportation for life. She was sent to Van Diemen's Land. Leaving Ireland, June 1852.
She arrived at Van Diemen's Land aboard the Martin Luther on Sept. 1, 1852.Ellen Curly who was partially literate was assigned to work for a local doctor. A year later, she married William Harris, a prisoner from Bristol who had been transported for a stabbing John Lucas with a knife in Gloucester. He was tried on 7th Aug 1849 .He was transported to Van Diemans Land for 7 years on the ship ‘"Aboukir", arriving on 20 March 1852
Ellen Curly applied for a Ticket of Leave. 4 September 1855 Ellen was granted a Ticket of leave in 1856 and received a conditional pardon in 1863. Ellen died in 1913.
