Hi, I have been looking into Bella Ann Hyndman. She married Charles Johnson in 1878, her name was given as Hindeman. Very confusing I know, but I was told to check all spellings as the B,D and M is rife with mistakes. There were 2 Sons registered, Robert James in 1883 and Wilbert(another mistake?) John in 1885, a Daughter Minnie in 1879 who has a death date of 1885 aged 5. The best people to help you are the Archivists, we have a Brilliant one in the Wairarapa that is up to any task. By the way Bella married Charles Rolander in 1888 as Charles Johnson with an H died in 1886. I wish you luck in your quest and hope the answers come soon. Regards Dawn.

Hi Jessie,

You could find out where these people are buried, and more, by obtaining copies of their death registrations.

Go to BDM Online - Historical Records (https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/Home/) and search the death indexes there for your people.

You can purchase copies of registrations on that site. Be sure to get the printout, not the legal certificate, for family history purposes. (I explain why at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/NEW-ZEALAND/20...)

Do check at https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/dataCollected/ to see exactly what information should have been gathered at the time of the event. Some of the earlier registrations (such as marriages before 1880) don't contain sufficient data to be considered useful to us family historians, so it's a waste of money to buy a copy.

If you don't want to order online, or are dealing with more recent events that aren't on the historical site and don't have an iGovt registration, you can order via ordinary mail - go to Births, Deaths & Marriages (BDM, http://www.bdm.govt.nz/) and locate the appropriate form. Print the form, complete it with what you know, and send it off with your payment. You can also call and place an order over the phone.

If you are a member of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists (NZSG, http://www.genealogy.org.nz/) enquire at their Certificates Collection before making purchases at BDM. If they're holding what you're looking for, it is much cheaper.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy

Many thanks Wendy. It's hopeless, as I do not have Paddy's surname or those of her children. It is becoming more apparent that she was not married to, Alexander Alfred Lewis. Although, on the electoral registers she does use the name Paddy V Lewis? Their are no births registered for Stewart or Carole under the name Lewis that I and many others could find.
Thank you again for your input.
Best regards
Gilly

Hi Gilly,

Without proper details, it's difficult to check resources for you, but there is plenty you can do for yourself - and you might recognise something that someone else might not.

First up is BDM Online - Historical Records (https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/Home/)

Before this "historical" web site, we had the older annual indexes on microfiche. These are still around, and are still useful. Look around at libraries and genealogy groups near you for them, or if you're an NZSG member you can make use of their free Research Service for lookups.

Another useful site is Archives New Zealand (http://www.archives.govt.nz/)

Anyone can walk into an Archives NZ office and request to view a file they hold. Files are not moved from office to office for your viewing convenience - you have to go to where it is held. Check on Archway for viewing restrictions, and if there are any there will be information there about how to get permission if it is possible.

If you cannot get there yourself, someone else could visit for you. Ask on this board if you need assistance, and someone may be able to go and take photos for you. There should be no charge, as there are no entrance fees and no material costs with emailing digital photos.

Alternatively, you could pay a fee to Archives NZ and they will send you a copy of the file.

Also check Family Search (http://www.familysearch.org/) Click on the link "Australia and New Zealand", then "New Zealand, Immigration Passenger Lists, 1855-1973".

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy

Hello Wendy, thanks for your response. No, I don't have a maiden name for Paddy V,and I don't even know when she was born and I'm not certain that I am correct in assuming that she was born in the north of England. This has been the ongoing problem in trying to trace her. I don't think she was actually married to my uncle, Alexander Alfred Lewis b.1907 Leicestershire. The last time I saw the family was about 1949 and they were living in Paddington, London. Their two were children,(my cousins) Stewart& Carole. Stewart would have been born abt 1838/39 and Carole abt 1945/46. Paddy disappeared off radar early 60's and went to Scarborough, Yks and either owned or managed a hotel there before leaving the UK and immigrating to New Zealand with one of her childen, possibly Carole.
Regards.
Gilly

Would you clarify your request - do you require a general photo of the cemetery which by the way is Waikumete Cemetery NOT Waitakere Cemetery.

If you search online at http://www.waitakere.govt.nz/ you will find that Evan Stanley ROBERTS was a retired Civil Servant, died 9 July 1986, aged 72 years, his ashes were scattered with no plot details available.

Regards
Margaret

The Peregrine was a ferry between Auckland and Devonport - see articles on Papers Past searching under combinations of Captain Clark, Thomas Watson Clark, Peregrine etc. http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast. In an article regarding his retirement it is stated that Thomas Watson CLARK arrived as bo'sun on the Bravo in 1866 and that he was Commodore of the Devonport Ferry Company, also makes reference to 'an exciting time blockade running during the American Civil War'.

On the Auckland Council Heritage Images you will find images of the Peregrine http://www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/dbtw-wpd/heritageimages/inde...

The births of six chldren are recorded on NZ Births, Deaths & Marriages where you should also be able to find the marriages/deaths of the children to look forward for descendants. https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/

Hope some of this helps

Regards, Margaret

I am looking for any information available on Capt. Thomas Watson Clark, who was Captain of the "Peregrine" around 1910 (+-). He arrived in New Zealand aboard the brigantine "Bravo" in 1866. As a Captain, he ran the Union blockade during the American Civil War, transporting goods to the Confederacy.

Any inforation on his birth, life, family and death would be greatly appreciated for a possible memorial being compiled for him. jamesmgray@bigpond.com

That's a lot of info, Steve! I don't know how to thank you for the photos & other stuff. It is very kind of you to help!

I don't the Joe Chivers you found is a close relative, although I could be wrong. My ancestor was a collier transported to Australia for manslaughter. "Big Joe" Chivers was born in 1826 on Wrights Lane, Cradley Heath, Rowley Regis, in the West Midlands of England -- about 120 miles from your Joseph the cloth manufacturer? I am able to track him pretty accurately up to the time of his crime, and he was never in fact a cloth manufacturer - but, as you say, I suppose he could have lied. He had good reason to lie, given his criminal record, I suppose?

Big Joe had a daughter born in 1847, but she died the year of his conviction - as did her mother (1856). They had a son, also name Joseph, born in 1850 in Dudley, Staffordshire, England. All of this is clear from birth and death records. After "Big Joe" was convicted & transported on the convict ship Lord Raglan, his son went to live with his maternal grandparents, who moved back to Wales. When son Joe was a bit older, he joined his father in Australia, married while there, and then at some point (not sure when) left for San Fransisco, and eventually ended up in the mining town of Grundy, Illinois. Big Joe married Anne Riley (1825-1908) in Australia in 1865, almost as soon as his sentence would allow him to get married. "Chivers" is a common enough name that I suspect that the other Chivers in NZ are not close relations at all. But I would love to be proven wrong! :D (I've never tried to track down their history.)

I messaged you with my email; when I get your email address I will send along the long summary of all the info I have on "Big Joe" - it's pretty substantial. :)

Again, many, many thanks!
Tom Spademan

Hi Tom,
I have photos and a couple of newspaper articles. The photos are not compressed in case you want to edit or whatever. I will E-Mail them, about 16megs all up.

These photos are from Christchurch and we have had 12,000 aftershocks in the past 2 years following our devastating earthquakes, so the cemetery is not a pretty sight, there are headstones lying down and smashed; I’m sorry, but this headstone is one of them.

Please read the text below from the 'Press' article that I will send you. I have done some birth, death and marriage searches on those listed below, there could be quite a tribe of Chivers in NZ, if this is the correct Joseph!

His daughter was aged 54yrs at the time of his death. (documented in the story on your family tree, stumbled across it whilst searching).

The Press Saturday 24 April 1880

Richards – Chivers, on April 14th at Durham Street Chapel by the rev. Reed. Charles Ross Richards eldest son of George Richards, surgeon, Gravesend, England, to Emma, oldest daughter of Joseph Chivers, cloth manufacturer, of Towerbridge, Wilts, England.

(his business could be a fabrication)

Marriage
1880	Emma Chivers - George Charles Ross Richards

Births
1881 Emma Louisa Richards - Mother: Emma, Father: George Charles Ross

1882 George Chippendale Richards - Mother: Emma, Father: George Charles Ross

1884 Alice Emma Richards - Mother: Emma, Father: George Charles Ross

1884 Ada Emma Richards - Mother: Emma, Father: George Charles Ross

1885 Charles Wesley Richards - Mother: Emma, Father: George Charles Ross

1887 Maria Emma Richards - Mother: Emma, Father: George Charles Ross

1888 Mary Eleanor Richards - Mother: Emma, Father: George Charles Ross

This is the only marriage I could see with any certainty, plenty of possibilities for the other children; however, the middle names being used helps a good deal.

Marriages
1914	Emma Louise Richards - William Alfred	Frazer

Deaths
1903 Joseph Chivers - age at death 78Y

1908 Ann Chivers - age at death 83Y

1958 Emma Louise Frazer - age at death 76Y

1962 George Chippendale Richards - age at death 79Y

1978 Charles Wesley Richards - date of birth 27 July 1885

I have checked to see if George or Charles made the ‘All Blacks’ though!

Kind regards

Steve

Hi Steve, and thank you!!! I would be deeply grateful for a picture or two! The only other thing I would love to get are probate records for them, but that's asking quite a bit, and I shouldn't have even mentioned it! :) I know I can get them through official channels; I ordered copies of death certs over the web, which arrived here very quickly. These are my only family members in NZ -- he was from coal country in England & was transported to Australia in the 1850s for manslaughter, and ended up in NZ after his sentence was done. His son came out and lived with him and Ann (not the son's birth mother), but then took off for San Francisco and ended up working in mines near Chicago, Illinois, in the US. I have collected a substantial amount of info on Joseph "Big Joe" Chivers and written it up as a narrative, if you are at all interested. :) But I have no pictures of their graves!

Best,
Tom Spademan
Flint, Michigan
USA

Adele, keep up the great work you are doing.
I've been into the Archer Street Cemetry, Masterton and found some of the old headstones had been damaged. I believe by vandals not nice at all.Others are very hard to read. I to think councils need to do something for the visitors!! I'm researching my family, McLaren, who farmed in the Waiarapapa area going back to the 1860's if not before, that is why I was there.
Regards Judy

While I was in Masterton about a year ago I was in the Archer Street Cemetry, Masterton looking for my Family, McLaren, and saw Knapp headstones. Also there are some Knapps in the Marlborough region as well. All because we have friends of the same name. Good luck, Judy.

Hi
No Greymouth district council have not got any of their records online. They ask you to call into the public counter and they will assist from there. Not a great help. We have ancestors there as well so its a bit frustrating. You could try writing to the Grey District Council email at www.greydc.govt.nz
Regards
Dennis

I think you should get a copy of Evan's death registration and see what it tells you.

It may tell you if Cissie was still alive or not.

It should tell you if there are any children surviving him.

It should tell you how long he had lived in New Zealand.

And more. See https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/datacollected/d... for what data should have been recorded at the time.

As I said before, get the printout, not the legal certificate, for family history purposes.

Once you've got that information, come back to us with whatever questions you still have, and we'll do our best to help you with them.

Kind Regards,
Wendy
