james mccarthy came from mitchelstown county cork to australia landing here about 1852 with wife [name unknown] and son james [my grandfather]story goes that he fled the country after a brawl at a political meeting with an english landowner in which the landowner fell off a balcony and was killed.authorities blamed james who escaped with the help of his friends who after a farewell drink put him on a ship with his wife and son.it was supposed to sail to Boston, usa, but next day after sobering up, he found that the ship was bound for sydney, australia.good yarn but i don't believe it.has anyone heard of this before.
