Hi Kari,

Thank you so very much for these pictures! I was afraid there might have not been any tombstone left so I am really glad to see there is a stone and even in such a good condition. I am very greatful of the pictures, thank you and greetings from Finland.

Kind regards,
Tonja

Location of Eagle cemetery - Eagle, AK

I have seen descriptions and the USGS map location of what I believe to be the Eagle cemetery in Eagle, AK. I have determined this latitude/longitude for its location:

64.791392 -141.228498

If you cut and paste these into Google map search you will see the location.

Does anyone know if the cleared area shown in the photo at that location is the cemetery? There is supposed to be a BLM campground next to the cemetery and I am not sure if what I am looking at is the cemetery or the campgound.

Person called Axel Ole Niemi (Aksel Onni Niemi) b. 1883, d. 1948 is buried at General #1, Tier 11, Row 33 and I would very much appreciate if someone with easy reach could go to see if there is any tombstone left and if so, please take a photo and send to me?

Kind regards,
Tonja Gronholm
Finland

I have an obituary for a Colonel who died in 1942 and was buried in the "post cemetery" in Anchorage in 1943 after his body was found. But, I can find no listing for him in the Fort Richardson cemetery, which I understand was established in 1946. Does anyone know if there is an earlier cemetery than Fort Richardson? I do not see one on Find A Grave or anywhere else.

I'm limited to the Anchorage and the Kenai Peninsula which is considered South Central Area.

Douglas is quite far away about 900 miles.

I did come up with the Obituary for John Andrew Petrovich. Please let me know if you'd like a copy if you don' have one.

Good Afternoon and Thank you for your help with researching cemetaries. I am working on my family tree and trying to find the Pusich family of Sitka/Douglas Alaska.

Specifically, I am looking for a Daniel and/or a Dianne Pusich. They were siblings. The Pusich family owned/operated a restaurant in Douglas. This establishment apparently was still in operation in the mid 1960's. I do not know if it is still running today. It would be fun to travel and visit.

My great grandmother was (Jelisaveta or Elixibet) Elizabeth Pusich. She came from Jugoslavia as a young girl to Douglas. I do not know the members of the family she lived with. The story is that her father (Spiro,Spirto, Pero?) Pusich came to America and did not follow through on his plan to send for his sons, daughters and wife. The family lore is that he was a scoundrel and let the family know he "died." Spiro actually moved to Angels Camp, Calaveras, Ca. He apparently remarried and had 4 additional children.

His son (Daniel?)brought his sister Elizabeth, Dianne and one other to Douglas. They left their mother, two more sister and a brother in the old country.

Elizabeth (aka Slava) married John Petrovich in the Douglas area and gave birth to my grandmother Ann or Ani Petrovich and Milly or Mili Petrovich. The young Petrovich family moved to Nevada for mining. They ultimately settled in Tonopah, Nevada. Elizabeth and John Petrovich are the parents of my grandmother Ann.

Fort Richardson National Cem. Request

I live in North Carolina. It may be a strange request but if there is anyone that lives near this cemetery I would love for soemone to take a snap shot of a grave and "snail" mail it to me. He was Felton Ray Brickhouse SGT USAF b:4-6-1935 d:6-30-1973. Here's my story. My mother is next to the baby of the family and Felton was the oldest. I think it was 7 or 8 kids. Felton was stationed over there in Alsaka, he was married, he died while over there, she moved back and the family never really had anymore contact with her, she remarried. I would love for my mother to be able to see his grave BUT I know for sure none of us will ever be traveling to Alaska. I would so greatly appreciate it if someone would be willing to take a picture of the grave and snail mail it to me. I haven't told mother I'm trying to get the picture. I would really like to suprise her with it. Thanks again, Belinda bcbcorbell@gmail.com

If you do not get a tripod site, put Alaska after knik. Grace in Palmer. Are you related to George Palmer?

Re: Annie C. Perkins/nee Thompson

My wife, friends and I just visited an old graveyard here near Tenakee Springs today. I remember seeing a Thompson I think....maybe it was that name. I will try and remember to look again soon on the next hike out there (not a very good chance of who you are seeking). The death dates were from about 1919 to the late 20's, and many were native names. We are located less than 100 miles from Haines, and there were a lot of natives still here back in those days. The reason I'm looking here is I was trying to find out more about the graveyard and if there was a record of all the burials. The thought occurred to me to learn more about the folks from store reciepts, many of which still exist stored up in the attic of the Snyder Mecantile. Please reply: kevin.allred@hotmail.com

Kevin Allred, formerly of Haines.

Kwikpak was near Andreafsky and both were in commuting distance of St Michaels where many of my relatives lived. St M was a very big city in the 1900 census due to the military base and the gold rush. My ggrandmother's brother-in-law was from Norway and ran the trading post in Andreafsky. His name was Fredericks. My ggrandfather was also from Norway and ran a post in Unalakleet in the 1890's. The daughter who died was named GURI ROSE ENGELSTAD. She was born in about 1895. Her father was Lutheran and her mother was Russian Orthodox but the family was close to an Episcopal priest named Chapman in Anvik. My grandmother was baptized in the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran church in Unalakleet in Dec 1893 but the church burned down along with the records. The first born was baptized in the Russian church in Kwikpak in 1891.

I have to admit I have never heard of Kwikpak. It is not in Interior Alaska.

I did a search for Kwikpak, and I see it is in the general area of Unalakleet and St. Michael's. I can only find Kwikpak Pass on a map, but Mapquest tells me it is near Emmonak. I have a friend from Emmonak. I'll ask her if she knows anything about a cemetery in Kwikpak. It might also help to give me these relatives' names.

If you can let me know the name of your aunt who died in Unalakleet, along with any details you have about her, I do have friends who live in Unalakleet, and I can ask them to see if anyone knows anything about your aunt.

Just found this post. Do you have any info on those who had their funerals at Kwikpak in the Russian church? Was there a cemetery there? I know of two ancestors who had their funerals there in 1875. Also, do you have any info on St Michael and Unalakleet? An aunt died in Unalakleet sometime after the 1900 census. There were relatives in St Michael so she could have been buried either place.

Annie C. Perkins/nee Thompson

Annie is of the Chilkoot Tribe, Wolf/Eagle Moiety, Shangukeidi Kaawdliyaayi Hit (House Lowered from the Sun). She was born in Wrangell, Ak 1874 and died in Haines 10/1928. I am seeking information on her family and where she is buried in Haines. I have checked the cemetary records for Haines, but she is not listed. I am assuming that she is buried in a Indian graveyard or a family one? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!..Have also had no luck with finding an obit. or what the newspaper name would have been back in 1928.

No listing for Mathew Rice or Schwall that I can find. I don't have a complete cemetery list however. You might try the City of Ketchikan website. The city owns the Bayview Cemetery.
Good luck to you!
By the way, what did Mathew (Matias) do here i n Ketchikan?
Louise Brinck Harrington

Do you have a list of the cemetaries you have already done and are any of them able to be viewed yet ? Have you researched any cemetaries in Ketchikan?

Unfortunately, Ketchikan is no where near Interior Alaska. It is in the area known as Southeast Alaska.

I would suggest you contact the Genealogical Society of Southeastern Alaska at P.O. Box 6313, Ketchikan, AK 99901.

You might also want to contact:

Ketchikan Borough Clerk
344 Front Street
Ketchikan, Alaska 99901-6431
(907) 225-3195

I wish you success.

Sue

Cemeteries in Interior Alaska

The Fairbanks Genealogical Society is working on a project to locate and identify all cemeteries and burial sites in Interior Alaska. We hope to transcribe any existing markers, get GPS readings, and take photographs, and make this information available on our website. In cases where markers are no longer readable or even in existence, we will make every effort to learn who may have been buried in the various cemeteries. Many rural Alaskan cemeteries have been abandoned and are in danger of becoming lost.

If anyone knows of cemeteries or burial sites in the Interior region of Alaska, please contact us and share as much information as you may have. The three main Fairbanks cemeteries are pretty well documented, but there are many cemeteries in outlying towns and abandoned townsites that have no records. We will be happy to learn of individuals who died in remote mining camps or Alaskan towns and villages. We are also collecting information on individual burial sites, and even the occasional Alaskan who had his ashes scattered in a favorite river.

We are not able to offer lookups at this time. When the information we have is ready, it will be posted on our website, and we will notify the various message boards.

Information may be sent to:
suerenkert@gci.net

Thank you very much,

Sue Renkert
Fairbanks, Alaska

Lloyd

Isadore"Izzy" Elizabeth (Switzer) Lloyd b. July 18, 1868, Preston Co., WV. Her name in the Fairbanks newspaper wedding announcement is listed as Elizabeth Isa .
m. Willard G. Lloyd in Fairbanks 1910.
Last known location for them in Alaska was #5 Goldstream, which I assume was a mine near Fairbanks--???
Just by chance, I found him buried in Yolo, Calif. (Oct., 1951) but not Aunt Izzy.
Would someone take pity on me and help me solve this long time mystery of her place and date of death?
Regards,
Carolyn

I really appeciate your help with the cemeteries. Thank you! SS records don't have any close possibility, unfortunately. Aunt Izzy was b. 1868 according to the family bible, tho 1910 cenus notes a much later yr. : ) She would have probably been a bit old to be in the work force when SS came into being. I haven't been able to get later census info. Carolyn

#5 Goldstream Fairbanks 1910 is the latest area and date where I know they were living. Willard d. 1951 in Calif. They had no known children. I will see what I can find about his family.

Yes. it is a distance to search AK from where I live in NC. I am so grateful for the i-net and thoughtful people like you!

Warm regards,
Carolyn

Great! I will see what I can do as far as records in the near future, unfortunately I just started snowing tonight, and most likely, today will be the last time I will see the ground until around March or April, so I may not be able to get a good picture of the marker if I find one. :) one of the hazards of being in the interior of Alaska.
My wife just thought about something... they may have been one of the many pioneers of Alaska, so that may give me some idea on where to go look for information about them... and they may have done something really interesting in the time that they may have been here. It would be nice to find a neat little story about there experiences here. I'll keep you updated.
