I found the web site not of much use to me. There was nothing explaining the project. I live in Lauderdale county and would be interested in getting involved. Please send more info
clynndel@comcast.net

Zion Cemetery

Hello:

I'm interested in Zion Cemetery. It is adjacent to Mt Zion Church in Pine Level, AL.

The majority of my ancestors are buried there and I was seeking an index of those buried there.

In researching cemeteries in Pine Level, AL, no one has indexed that cemetery.

What is happening to preserve the cemeteries that are adjacent to churches. It is the responsibility of the church to index, preserve and to make those records accessible to the County and/or State?

If anyone lives close and would do a lookup, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

Contact the Pea River Genealogical Society in Elba, Alabama. They have a book that was published in the 60's by a Morman gentleman that gives all the cemetaries in the area. This will cover Coffee County. Jot a line if this doesn't work and I can get a list at the library in my city.

Melis.

Lorraine,

According to the Historical Cemetery Atlas of Alabama (Bullock Co. section), there is a Mt. Olive Cemetery located down near the town of Omega off Hwy 223 near the southern edge of Bullock Co. near the Pike Co. line. It is cemetery #88 on the atlas map of Bullock Co. Also, on the Alabama DOT Map for Bullock Co. there is noted a Mt. Olive Baptist Church #1 near Omega. Have you checked this one out? Since you live out of state, could you possibly be remembering the wrong road? There does not seem to be one located on Hwy 82 as far as I can tell.

Also, According to the Historical Cemetery Atlas of Alabama there is a second Mt. Olive Cemetery on the south western edge of Bullock near the Montgomery Co. line. It is cemetery #41 in the atlas map.

If anyone out there can confirm the Mt. Olive Baptist Church #1 on Hwy 223 near Omega or tell us if they know of a Mt. Olive Baptist Church #1 on Hwy 82 please chime in.

Cynthia Kirkland
Web Master for (ACPA)
Alabama Cemetery Preservation Alliance
"Preserve, Restore and Venerate."
Saving Alabama Cemeteries
http://www.alabama-cemetery-preservation.com
