Greetings -

I recently returned from a THREE week "genealogy" vacation tracking down my H*D*P*TH's along the way ... and while I was traveling through the Phoenix, Arizona area, I made a special pit stop to visit the Cross-Cut / Williams Cemetery ... what a sad sight it was :( The cemetery is located near the northwest corner of the intersection at East Van Buren Street and North 48th Street ... It appears that this cemetery has been abandoned for quite some time, and who ever the owner / caretaker is, appears not to want anyone to locate them :(

A cousin of mine from NM, earlier this year tried to locate the owner / caretaker when she found the gate locked ... the local historical society had no knowledge of the cemetery ... as they had stated that the cemetery had not been reported to them ? ? ? when this cousin inquired at the city hall, they were eventually given the names of three possible owners ... of which none were the owner, or at least didn't wanted to claim it :(

On my visit, I slip through a hole "recently made" in the chain link fencing and photographed the remaining headstones that were in existence on my visit ... The two Hedgpeth graves that I hope to find, didn't have any headstones visible in order to locate them :(

Anyone with any info about this cemetery ? ? We would be extremely please to hear about it :)

the photo's of the existing headstones and general condition of this cemetery are posted on the H*D*P*TH web site at this link ... there are 5 pages with 4 photo's each ...

the following is the names on the markers that had that info available ...

Harrison M. Hill - died Mar. 27, 1925

I. W. Williams - 1872-1947

[this is a very beautiful monument - with "no" apparent damage at all]
John W. Williams 1836-1912
Manda W. Williams 1858-1934

Father - Press Hill - 1859-1940 - "Phoenix Pioneer"

T. J. Hill - 1859-1941

Eugene E. Bridgeman 1847-1929

side facing main entrance
Margaret Cline born in Indiana 1814
died Phoenix, Ariz. June 30, 1898 aged 84 yrs.
on opposite side
Christian Cline born in Penn. 1810
died Aug. 25, 1898

this next one was located at the bend in the "L" shape of this cemetery

within a pipe fencing - Davis family plot
[one marker with both]
Wm. Henry Davis - Aug. 7, 1872 - May 10, 1909
Lula Ellen Davis - Mar. 17, 1875 - Mar. 4, 1941

these next two where kind of out in the middle

[the oldest visible marker here]
Jas. A. Young - 1822-1877

[one marker with both]
Father - Henry Adams - 1838-1900
Mother - Kate Adams - 1848-1907

there is evidence and or remnants of at least 11 or 12 other grave markers but the tops are missing :( either only the marble base remains and or they were snapped off just above the ground ... one of these unknown graves has a fancy wrought iron fence [that is surprisingly not really damaged, although aging is showing], but all that is inside of the fenced area is a square marble base "the top is missing" I have taken pictures of those unknown too, but they are of little value without a plot plan for this cemetery of who's planted where ... from the data available on the existing headstones, it appears that the last burial was in 1947 ... and the earliest burial was at least in 1877 [and that grave is out in the middle of this "L" shape cemetery]

The two Hedgpeth's that have been reported to have been buried here [according to their death certificates] were Robert Riley Hedgpeth 1867-1932 and his wife Susan Mahala (Duncan) 1871-1942 ... Robert was a son of Lewis Johnson Hedgpeth ...

again ... Anyone with any info about this cemetery ? ? We would be extremely please to hear about it :)
