Looking for the death date and interment of Minnie Lulu (Wilbur) Powers (b. 1868), m. 1901 as 2nd wife of Ivan Orlando Powers who d.1929, Wash. DC. Minnie was listed in the 1930 census of District of Columbia (having lived there for several yrs previous), but apparently is not there in the 1940 census. Per a family letter, she was living in DC in 1937 and was alive in 1938 when her sister Salie (Wilbur) Brandt died in Savannah, GA. Apparently, Minnie is the only member of the Wilbur not to have been interred in the Wilbur family plot in Savannah.

Have been unable to locate an obituary in Washington DC or elsewhere.

In your reference to George (Andrew) Downs, wife Jane E. Bowles. Geo Andrew, died 4-2-1945, in Jacksonville after being hit by a bus. George Downs and Jane married in 1918, and lived in Washington, DC. Both were born in Southern Maryland. They had twins born in Sep 1919, and died in Aug 1920 two weeks apart. James is still alive and living in New Bern, NC about to turn 90. Just spoke to him. Next was George Martin, my father, died 2005. Eddie was next;he lived in Clovis, CA. His wife still lives in Clovis; I spoke to her several days ago. Gladys was born 1934 and died 2001, in Blairsville, GA. Mamie was the youngest, died in 2000 and lived in Phoenix, AZ. So, I don't know if this is the same George Andrew Downs?? Which parent is yours?

Hello,

I recently read your post on Ancestry.com and was wondering if you could help me with a difficult problem. I am looking for a gravesite in North West, WDC for a homeless person whose name is Arthur Maynard Tolbert. He is listed as deceased, Sept 18, 2003 in the SSDI death index. His DOB is April, 1930.
I have exhausted all leads in finding his burial site. It would mean so much to me if you could help.
I can be reached at walterww1935@yahoo.com

Those names don't add up to anything I have but I sure appreciate your effort!!

I gained most of my Robey info because of a connection with another Ancestry.com member and their family tree of Moreland/Kidwell. Octavia Virginia Moreland married Nehemiah Robey 25 June, 1853 at the home of her father John Moreland in DC. I know Nehemiah had a brother Columbus Robey who is also buried there R129/244 along with his wife Mary J Robey. His obit on the CC website says they had several children but I don't know any of their names.

Nehemiah and Octavia had 5 boys (John R; Nehemiah Jr; William H; Thomas Edward & Benjamin F) and 4 girls (Mary Elizabeth; Annie W; Octavia Virginia & Emma Jane) that I know of. Mary Elizabeth Robey (my G grandmother) married Frank T Ash. They are both buried there and I have a picture of their headstone. Frank & Mary E had 2 girls (Emma Elizabeth, my grandmother - she married John Thomas Manning and they are both buried in Columbia Gardens cemetery in Arlington, Jennie (Jane) O and William F Ash. Jennie and william are buried with Frank and Mary.

I also found an old reference to a burial site for Nehemiah and Octavia as R22/193. Anyway if your friend Chuck Robey is interested in sharing information have him contact me. I'm willing to share whatever I have. I'll let you know when I'm done downloading the pictures :)

I just got back from the cemetery. Boy was it hot out. When I left there was a nice cool breeze.

Anyway, I looked in the Range 111, Site 188 area and only found a Robey headstone with names other than Nehemiah and Octavia on groundstones in front of it. I took photos of them if you want them. The headstone was embedded in a large bush so I couldn't get the entire stone and there was nothing on the back of it. Those names are:

MOTHER
Annie I. Robey
1878-1906

FATHER
Harry L. Robey
1877-1926

I also found another Robey groundstone in another area. Because I didn't have other names to look for I wasn't sure.

ROBEY
John Thomas
JAN. 31, 1897-DEC. 12, 1941

Vinnie Gladys
FEB. 12, 1899

Now I remember what was in that message that either got deleted or I mistakenly didn't send it (I'm always getting sidetracked). I mentioned something about a Chuck Robey who is researching the Robey names in the Maryland and DC areas. I've done some research for him at Congressional Cemetery.

Do you want these images? I can post them online so you can download them if you don't want to give out your email address publicly. I have my own web server space. I just need to know when you are finished downloading them so I can remove them.

I will check the next time I go there which is hopefully this weekend if it doesn't rain.

As for certificates, this is the best source depending on years (DC Archives). The information may have changed for the years I have listed:

Office of Public Records
1300 Naylor Court, NW
Washington, DC 20001-4225
(202) 671-1107
Fax: (202) 727-6076

Records in the D.C. Archives include birth (1874-1928) and death (1874-1931) certificates, marriage certificates (1858-1991), wills and probates (1801-1990), indentures of apprenticeship (1812-1893), guardianships (1862-1939), articles of incorporation (1870-1955), building permits (1949-1995), and land records (1840-1930).

Yes, I am still interested in getting a photo of Nehemiah and Octavia Robeys Tombstone in the Congressional Cemetery. Their plot is listed as R111/189 however it is not on the website. They do have both their obituaries listed and they lived their most of their lives in DC. Nehemiah worked at the Naval shipyard for several years and the obits mentioned he had acquired a lot of property. He was also a member of the I.O.O.F Harmony Lodge # 9 but they never responded to any inquiries either. Most of my family on both sides mainly lived in Anacostia, Alexandria and Claredon Virginia. Anyway...any pictures you could take would be so appreciated. Also how to get birth certificates? Nehemiah was born March 2 1827 in Fairfax Virginia and Octavia Robey (nee Moreland) was born in 1835 or 1836 in Fairfax Virginia. I've gone about as far as I can on the internet.

I await your reply, Karen

If he died in DC then his DC death certificate will show place of internment. If he died outside of DC and is buried in DC there is a foreign death cert filed with DC. Either way, I'd suggest getting in touch with the DC archives.

Robey tombstone photos needed please from DC

I'm hoping someone in the DC area can help me get a photo of my great, great grandfather and mothers tombstone in the Congressional Cemetery in Washington DC. They are listed as buried in R111/188 and R111/189. Their names are Nehemiah Robey and his wife Octavia Robey. When I looked up their gravesite their was no photo. I have e-mailed the cemetery but have never heard back from them. It would mean so much to me. It sounds like an incredible cemetery and I love their website!
Thanks so much.

Name is Frank Cleveland Buddington born 1885 Washington DC. On his World War I draft paper he is a patient of St Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington DC. Where would you find the paperwork of that patient and also if he is at that Cemetery on the Hospital Grounds, he is non-military and may have died at the Hospital. Thanks Emily

I had the same problem trying to find where my grandmother is buried. If you have an Ancestry.com subscription you can do what I did - look up an obit. The Washington Post and the Washington Star (now defunct) obits are pretty good. If you do not have a subscription please send me particulars on the McCallums you are searching like full names, dates even if very approximate, any other information that might be in the obit like who might be referenced in the obit (their children and childrens' married names, etc).

I am really persistent and have had remarkable success and I would be happy to look for you.

Lane
asialane2000@yahoo.com

My DUNNING Family buried at the Congressional Cemetery

Hi,

I am hoping that someone out there can finaly help me with my DUNNING family that that appears in Washington, DC in the early 1800s.

It appears now that my ancestor, George A. DUNNING, b. abt. 1821, and was buried here on 25 Jun 1875, was one of the children born to John DUNNING that was buried here 7 Jul 1830. It appears his wife's name was Mary (LNU) who was buried here also, 17 Sep 1828. It seems that they had 4 other children, if I am right, buried here, too.

I know that George A. DUNNING was married to Elizabeth STEINHAGAN abt. 1840. But, I have not found a marriage record for them. Elizabeth STEINHAGAN'S parents were Christopher STEINHAGAN, b. abt. 1788 in Holland and died bef. 1860 in around the DC & Baltimore MD area. Christopher's wife's name was Margaret (LNU), b. abt. 1800 in Maryland and she died abt. 1860, as I do not find her in the censuses after 1850, also.

Geo. A. DUNNING & Elizabeth STEINHAGAN'S son, Samuel Lewis DUNNING was my GG-grandfather. He married Anna Lee CARDOZO, 12 Oct 1882 in DC. She was b. Feb 1864, Norfolk, VA and d. 25 Mar 1925, Wash. DC. She was the dau. of Charles Pembrook CARDOZO and Ann M. SUMPTER of Lynchburg, VA who moved to DC after the Civil War. Charles and Anna are buried in the Glenwood Cem. in DC.

Does anyone out there know who or what DUNNING family that John DUNNING and his wife, Mary who died and were buried in the Congressional Cemetery were connected to?

Any help will be appreciated. And I will gladly exchange my genealogy information with anyone out there that can help or connects with me.

Thank you in advance.

Darlena Kidd Harmon
Charleston, WV

1870 CENSUS;
Washington, DC;
District Of Columbia;
#2120-2453;
DUNNING, George A..../ 49 / M / W / Butcher / $500. / DC
DUNNING, Elizabeth.../ 45 / F / W / Keeping House / MD
DUNNING, John C..../ 25 / M / W / Steward in Hotel / MD
DUNNING, Margaret.../ 21 / F / W / At Home / MD
DUNNING, Mary E.../ 15 / F / W / At Home / MD
DUNNING, George E..../ 12 / M / W / At Home / MD
DUNNING, Samuel L.../ 9 / M / W / At Home / MD
JARVIS, John A..../ 26 / M / W / Clerk in Store / $2000. / Virginia

Congressional Cemetery

(Child of S.
Re: Congressional Cemetery

I used to work there years ago as a paid employee/volunteer. When I left, the ones who took the job over were hardly ever there. I used to be there every Saturday for the year I worked/volunteered there (snow, rain, 9/11, etc.).

If you need Congressional Cemetery information, I can give it to you free of charge. Just email me at: bozgen@verizon.net. The only thing on the minds of the Board that runs CC is that it is the major dog-walking park in D.C. which has always been a problem with me. I used to clean up dog crap before all the funerals I took charge of. Most, if not all, board members do not have any family members buried there. I have over 200. If anyone cares about family heritage and respecting the dead they do not. Anyone who lets a dog crap on a family grave is at the bottom of my list.

The former president of the association cares a great deal and took the effort to digitize all of the original records (1809 to 1982). Many original records after 1982 were destroyed because a certain caretaker (Hanley) was pocketing money from plot sales and destroyed the records to cover his tracks. Records were recreated from obituaries and whatever Hanley (the criminal) left behind. I added to these records when I was working there, but mostly from obituaries and inscriptions from tombstones.

Another thing, and I mentioned this years ago to the Board, the casual visitor to the CC office doesn't know that in the safe there are a lot of records that include grave site transfer records that include names and other information for people connected to those buried there. In other words, the person who has "ownership" of the grave at Congressional might not necessarily be buried there which could lead to other cemeteries and even other connections. My favorite volunteer past time at Congressional was connecting genealogists to other families via links from Congressional.

Hi, I don't think there are any Browns in my family, but who knows? I am looking for Hardy, Burgess, Royce mostly. Have you check the DCGENWEB? A lot of great inf about early Georgetown. I found my great uncle's baptism, my grandfather's sister's wedding as well as my daughter in law's parents wedding and a lot of others I knew. It's the historic Congressional Street Church. Email me direct and I will keep my eye out for your Browns. Carlislefede@aol.com
Do you live in DC? If so, the staff at Glenwood allow you to go thru the index cards and books. If not, you can try calling them. I went there when I was in DC and found a lot of family, but there is one that I know is there and could not find the grave this time and they did not have an index card on him.

I do volunteer work at Congressional Cemetery in D.C. They have an extensive database online at www.congressionalcemetery.org. I looked on their site, but didn't see any McCallum's. For anyone else searching this is a very good resource. I know they are transcribing all of their internment logs so the information will not be lost and can one day be put up on their site.
