Eastern Cemetery is located next door to Cave Hill Cemetery, separated by an about 15ft thick brick wall that is topped with razor wire. Eastern Cemetery has a bad history, being taken over by the state a few years ago, with the previous owners being prosecuted for various felonies regarding Eastern.
From about the 1920s until the 1980s, there were plots resold, multiple burials conducted, used burial areas destroyed (such as the babyland), and areas paved over. There are large areas where there doesn't appear to be memorials, yet when I walk the area, I know that I am walking over someone's resting place.
Eastern Cemetery is my project, in that my intention is to photograph every readable memorial within the cemetery. I want those resting there to be honorably remembered, and I decided to do the photography documentation after I helped someone find their family plot, when they were told there were no markers in the plot.
This is Eastern Cemetery.
