The cemetery was incorporated in 1853 on the grounds of an old estate - and in 1861 the eastern part was bought by the government and used to bury 2300 Union soldiers. There is also a Confederate Hill in the cemetery as well - with the remains of some 600 Confederate soldiers. It is 350+ acres. The old entrance on Frederick Avenue is closed - the main entrance is on Wilkens Avenue now.
