ATTN: THOSE WHO HAVE CIVIL WAR VETERAN ANCESTORS BURIED IN LAFAYETTE CO, MS.

The Calhoun County chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp 1969 , in honor of Mississippi's Civil War Veterans, periodically undertake cemetery clean up and renovation projects in their local area. As part of this process, an effort is made to identify all Confederate Veterans who may be resting in the specific cemetery being restored. All Civil War veterans who are identified are honored with a commemorative headstone, ordered and placed by the SCV, which identifies that veteran and honors his sacrifice.

This spring, the SCV Camp 1969 has undertaken the cleanup of Old Liberty Cemetery near Oxford, MS. This is one of the oldest cemeteries in the area; founded in the mid 1840's. It is about an acre in size, located on a beautiful hill within the Holly Springs National Forest north of Oxford. Unfortunately, the cemetery has been neglected for decades and is in terrible shape. Many gravesites are unidentifiable not because of worn stones, but because of overgrowth. The SCV cleanup will restore this cemetery to it's former beauty, and allow a complete census to be taken.

IS YOUR CIVIL WAR VET ANCESTOR BURIED AT OLD LIBERTY CEMETERY?

The SCV needs to identify all Civil War vets buried there to order the appropriate honorary headstone. If your Civil War Veteran ancestor is buried here, please reply to this post with the name of your ancestor and his war record as best as you know it. That way your ancestor can be honored with the other vets resting there.
