SC CEMETERY GPS PROJECT UPDATE

Recently, AERIAL VIEW enhancement links have been added to the following SC Cemetery GPS Project webpages.

ABBEVILLE http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/01-abbev...

ANDERSON http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/04-ander...

GREENVILLE http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/23-green...

LAURENS http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/30-laure...

NEWBERRY http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/36-newbe...

OCONEE http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/37-ocone...

PICKENS http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scoconee/Cemetery_GPS/39-picke...

NOTE: This project cannot provide you with cemetery tombstone inscriptions.

In many counties, local Genealogical/Historical Societies have compiled Cemetery Survey Books that they have For-Sale. Normally, if survey books are available, the book's Surname Indexes will be available on-line for searching. This will give you the ability to determine what tombstone inscriptions each book contains.

1. Project’s MAP VIEW links will provide you with printable cemetery finding Road Maps.

2. Projects’ AERIAL VIEW links (NEW) will provide you with an overhead satellite view of the cemetery.

3. Google’s STREET VIEW will provide you with a view of the cemetery, as if you were standing on a nearby main road, and looking towards the cemetery.

This is a non-copyrighted project and you can reuse any of the on-line info as you see fit.

Paul Kankula

I contributed many GPS to the find a grave, but not rootsweb, as they are a branch of Ancestry and have a much larger budget to get the coordinates.
One thing about Findagrave.com is the submissions are usually personal, moms, dads, grands, neighbors. Many of my family members are in cemeteries that would be long gone if not for relatives doing the upkeep.

I plan to visit there on Sunday, all the way from San Francisco. I'm a descendent of George Storey and Nancy Cantor. Have a copy of the Family Storey and have always wanted to set foot on the soil of my earliest known ancestors. Would be nice to meet relatives in the area if any. Appears to be deep in the woods though. Assume Spartanburg is the closest major city where such folks might live. If anyone knows I would appreciate learning more.

Thanks for the info. If driving away from Chester on Lancaster Road, Pryor School is on the left side of the road. The school was not used for teaching after 1956. I think that Pryor School may have been used to store hay in the 70's and 80's, but may now have been restored.

Chisholm Cemetery is on the opposite side of Lancaster Rd, and behind what used to be Sarah Clayborne Shannon's house and property. The house was about 50 yds from the highway. The grave yard appeared to be about another 50 yds. behind the house. I believe the house is gone now. You won't be able to see the headstones from the road. The cemetery was not well kept even 50 years ago. We went there occasionally when we were kids.

There are 2 houses behind the school also with people living there. Hope this helps. I occasionally see people parked beside the school. Wondering if they are visiting the cemetery or the school.

That would be great if you ever go there and happen to stumble upon it. I am from Upstate New York, 10 minutes from canadian border, I wouldn't be able to travel down to South Carolilna for a year or so.

My family that I know is burried there is:
-David Clayton Mathews 12/07/1875-10/30/1946
-Possibily his wife: Sarah Elizabeth Hyde 1871-? (Not sure of her actual name, it might have been Hyatt and not Hyde..)
-his children Gary and Beairn were listed buried there, 1906-1912,not sure if they were twins or something or what..

I know the family tree's names but those were the ones I knew was burried there is David and two of his children and i'm asuming his wife is burried with him? His parents names were William Thomas Mathew and Mary Ann Watkins.. From what I know, his family burned down in a house all at once, it was just David and one brother that survived the fire. Not sure if theres any truth to that story. They were just little boys.

The cemetery is directly behind the Church of God on Hwy 20 in Pelzer. It's in Anderson County, but also very close to the Greenville County line. I'm just a few miles from there and may be able to help, although many of the markers there are in terrible condition.
Thanks,
Jennifer

So often I send messages to abbeville but no one answers. Frank vance daughter Mary my grandmother married Joe Evans. Their children were John my father also ike and their sister Josue.

Public burial ground, Cannonsborough, Charleston Neck - any ideas about this?

A Jury of Inquest was held on Wednesday last, on the King-street road, about a mile above the Tobacco Inspection, on the body of ANDREW ADAMS, supposed to be about 70 years of age, who was on the pension list of this state, he having been a continental soldier and had lost his left arm in the American Revolution; he was found dead near the edge of the road, about eight o'clock in the morning. The Jury brought in a verdict, that the deceased came to his death by the visitation of GOD. His remains were interred in publick burial ground at Cannonsborough, on Charleston Neck. - His relatives will please to call on the Coroner for a few articles of goods found in his possession, and a few dollars, which may be of service to them.
Coroner's Office, Charleston District [abt 1830?]

That is a great suggestion. I have an elderly cousin who is very active in that society and did talk to her about it. There is a lot of confusion between the two cemeteries - it is hard to see where one ends and one begins. I think we have it figured out, but new surveys need to be done to replace the ones that overlapped.

It appears that SOMEONE is concerned with the appearance of this cemetery. When I did a Google Street View ( http://maps.google.com/maps?q=n34+49.833,+w81+44.767&hl=... ), I see that someone has put an American Flag at its entrance. The "trick" is to find out who.

Although SC Counties are State authorized to maintain their pioneer cemeteries, they normally don't have the funds to do such --- or interest...

You probably would be better-off posting your query on the UNION COUNTY Query Board. That would give you more exposure to locals who are into genealogy.

gcgenweb@bellsouth.net
