William Rodd buried in Washington County Utah

Hello,

I am interested in discovering more about William Rodd who was born in South Cheriton, Somerset, England in 1813. He married Ann Hillier on the 17 August 1833 and had four children between 1837 - 1845. However, some time between 1861 and 1871 he seems to have left his wife and gone to live in Utah, USA.

In 1881, back in England, his wife, didn't know whether William was dead or alive and on the 1881 UK census stated that her marital condition was unknown because her husband had been gone for some time - he was a Mormonite.

William Rodd was my 3xgreat uncle and I would like to know when he arrived in the USA and more about his life. Does anyone have details of him on the 1870, 1880 and 1890 US censuses? I know he died in 1892 and that he is buried in the Washington County Cemetery in Utah.

Any help would be appreciated.

Does anyone have William on the 1870 or 1890 census in Utah?

Cheers, Horatia

1870 United States Federal Census Record

Name: William Rodd
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1813
Age in 1870: 57
Birthplace: England
Home in 1870: St George, Washington, Utah Territory
Race: White
Gender: Male
Post Office: St George

In the same household:
Name: Hariett Rodd
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1807
Age in 1870: 63
Birthplace: England
Home in 1870: St George, Washington, Utah Territory

I found William in the Saint George City Cemetery, Washington County, Utah, but I did not find Hariett there. In the 1880 census, he is listed as a widower.

Hello,

This is all very interesting about Harriet. However, when I use this website:

http://www.xmission.com/~nelsonb/pioneer.htm

there is no mention of Harriett Rodd on the 1870 census! So I am rather puzzled!

However, I appreciate your help in looking.

Hello Horatia

I looked at the site you showed me. The census there is the Utah State Census, which might not be as complete as the US Federal Census, which is what I used. In Ancestry.com, I viewed the photo of the page of the 1870 Federal Census, and the information I posted is accurate.

Good luck in your search

Holly,

Thank you for explaining it to me! So my uncle had two wives - cos he had a wife still living in England! (Tee-Hee).

Melba,

Many thanks. As you have William's cause of death, do you have his death certificate? I would love a scanned copy if you do.

Cheers, Horatia
